Pours a deep dark chocolate brown with a bit of ruby hue,a thinner lighter beige head atop.Dark froast coffee stands out most in the nose with some molasses thrown in,I like the deep roast,it's like being in a coffee house.Dark roast, unsweetened chocolate, and char at the onset of the palate with some vanilla/caramel flavors providing just enough sweetness to make for a well balanced stout.I like the fact that it's not a one sided stout flavor-wise,it's roasted but also has some good sweetness that never becomes to big.

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Black as night, pours a healthy tan head that produces some lace on the glass. Bready roasty nose with some herbal hop and dried dark fruit in the nose. Kiss of chocolatey sweetness upfront, toasted and roasted maltiness drys middle to end. Ample hoppiness and some warming alcohol in the finish. Love hoppy stouts like this, well done!

L: Pours dark brown with ruby highlights under a 1” tan foam cap that is moderately persistent and has a very fine bead.

S: Has a roasty nose with traces of chocolate, coffee, grain and dark sugars.

T: Begins mildly sweet with dark dried fruit flavors, and a touch of stone fruit, moving towards coffee by mid palate with a balancing hop bitterness and some grainy roast astringency on the finish that helps dry the beer out. There are no sharp or burnt flavors. The malt flavors are medium high, the roast is medium, the chocolate flavors are medium low, the hop bitterness is medium high, the sweetness is medium low. In the finish a lingering roast flavor and hop bitterness combine to suggest dark bitter chocolate.

F: Very creamy medium full body and medium carbonation.

O: A very drinkable and satiating stout.

12 oz bottle filled last month (Nov. 2014).

Pours clear but near black in the glass. The dark brown body is topped by a large and exceptionally creamy head. Excellent retention and lacing.

Aroma: A load of dark roasted malts with faint spicy hops. Strong for style.

Flavor: largely follows the aroma. There's enough hint of coffee here to send me frantically scanning the label of this late night ale, but no coffee listed in the description: the limited suggestion of coffee in the aftertaste proves reassuring. Exceptional abundance of very dark but not quite burnt grain flavor. Excellent bitter-sweet balance is mildly bitter overall; seemingly less than the listed IBU = 60..

Feel: smooth, near medium body; excellent medium, soft carbonation.

O: a strong offering from this experienced brewery.

Poured into a Haw River Farmhouse Ales teku glass. Label says DEC08 14

A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with a 1/2 inch dark tan head that retains decently before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a symmetrical pattern of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a jagged ring behind.

S- Solid roasted malt hit with some light coffee and semisweet chocolate interlaced.

T- Roast-forward but the alcohol level and mouthfeel keep it more subdued. A little char with a fading aftertaste.

M- Somewhat thin feel but with a fullish body and medium carbonation.

O- Pretty decent, no-frills stout. Straightforward and balanced enough to make me enjoy one, but not reach for a second.

The appearance is a nice dark brown color that borders on black but doesn't quite make it there. The smell and taste have a slightly hoppier note than a usual stout. It certainly has more roasted coffee notes than other similar beers. Good. Get it.

Pours black, but brown and red show thru when held to the light. Thumb sized brown head falls fairly quick but leaves gobs of lace.

Aroma is nice charred notes, hints of smoke and light licorice riding on chocolate malts. Some coffee and vanilla notes mingled with some hoppy herbal notes.

Taste is earthy notes up front riding on roasted malt base, chocolate and good coffee notes mingled. Some good vanilla notes with herbal hoppy notes. Some good spice notes mingled through out not sure if its the hops yeast or what.

Mouthfeel is only medium with lightly peppy carbonation. Seems little light for a stout but its enjoyable enough.

Overall find it a solid beer, little spicier then most but makes for a good holiday brew. Will buy more of this if its still available.

A: Pours an opaque but clear black in color with light to moderate amounts of gentle carbonation along the edges of the glass and some cola brown + dark amber highlights. The beer has a half finger tall foamy light tan head that reduces to a large patch of very thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of roasted dark malts with some slight hints of charred malts and just a touch of smoked malts.

T: Upfront there are moderate to strong flavors of roasted dark malts with just a hint of anise/licorice. There are some very light notes of charred malts and hints of earthy malts. Moderate amounts of bitterness which linger through the finish.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with slightly heavier than moderate amounts of carbonation. Hints of dryness and alcohol warming in the finish.

O: Another very enjoyable beer from Green Man...not that I should be surprised as I have enjoyed just about everything I have tried from this brewery. A really nice winter beer and could easily stand up to a cold winter night (probably best enjoyed sitting in front of the fireplace being sipped slowly).
