Poured into a Dogfish traditional oversized snifter. Label says May 07 2015.

A- Pours a reddish dark brown color with a 1/4 inch tan head that doesn't retain long before becoming a paper-thin ring around the edge of the glass and a few wisps of sheer surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves tiny specs behind.

S- The aroma is absolutely divine. Huge onslaught of tart cherries with some moderate lacto funk and some rum barrel character. It's all tied together in a harmonious trifecta of bliss that makes my eyes roll back in my head. Perfection. The rum comes through more as it warms bringing a solvent-like alcohol presence that the power of the cherries still manages to complement. Light vinegar aftertaste.

T- The cherries are the star of this show for sure providing a tartness and sweetness that works so well with the lacto. The rum barrel lays back setting the stage for most of the drink, but starts coming through more as it warms. The sourness of the lactic acid and the sweetness of the cherries mask all the bad parts of the alcohol flavor while leaving all the good. After a while the sourness becomes just a tad tiresome making it difficult to imagine drinking more than 12 or so ounces while still appreciating it the way it should be appreciated.

M- Dryness from the lactic acid combines with dry tannins from the oak plus a restrained but still somehow assertive sourness making for a near-perfect feel. Medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- Definitely one of the best sours I've ever had. The cherries meld with the rest of the beer in a way I've only experienced a few times before. The rum barrel adds a complexity that no other "Kriek" I've tried before has exhibited. A shame this exact beer will never be made again but others of equal excellence are sure to be on the horizon.

Appearance: Arrives with a mahogany brown color with a maroon tinge; the head is modest but leaves a few strands behind

Smell: Sour cherry and vinous notes, the rum barrel is hard to detect in the aroma

Taste: Toasted malt, lactic sour cherry flavors and a touch of chocolate, up front, with the vinous and oaky notes developing, in the middle; after the swallow, the tartness continues to expand but the rum doesn't really make a presence until the finish though it becomes a touch more apparent with each sip

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; nicely puckery

Overall: Not sure what the "magic" barrels are but I did see some Rombauer barrels marked "Maceo" stacked in the brewery area so I am guessing that they beer was aged in red wine barrels of some sort before being finished off in the rum barrel; however, they did it, the end product is quite impressive

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a dark dark brown almost black hue with a thin blanket that leaves a thin halo and awesome legs 4.25 (X .05 = .213)

S - Aromas of awesome rum notes without being boozy. Really nice sour brown notes, good cherries too. Lighter chocolate and darker malts, super aromatic. 4.5 (x .2 = .9)

T - Taste is similar to the nose, really good sour brown and cherries, loads of subtleties. The wine is awesome and is accented incredibly by the rum. This is simply delicious. The booze is hidden well, lightly flemmy. Incredibly smooth and balanced. Wow. 4.75 (x .45 = 2.138)

M - Mouthfeel is very nicely tart and sour, great softer carbonation, alcohol hidden well. 4.5 (x .1 = .45)

O - Overall this beer was just incredibly good. Awesome nose and taste that just popped with barrel and rum and sour cherry. Simply delicious 4.5 (x .2 = .9)

2013 Vintage

It pours a very murky brown with no head. It smells tart, sour, cherries. First sip is nothing but vinegar so I was very discouraged. I let it sit a little, and it tasted a lot better. It's sour but not overwhelming. Taste is oak and some chocolate. It's somewhat chewy in the mouth and it really sticks. I was fortunate to receive this in a trade, and very grateful for it. However, if I were to have this again, I'd probably prefer it fresh.

Pours a brownish red. Almost zero sense of carbonation. The slightest bit of lacing stays up on the walls of the glass. No head at all. Well....the color is nice enough I guess.

Smell is very pleasant. Tart cherry juice, a little funk, a bit of that sour lacto smell, and a bit of generic dark fruit.

Taste is very in line with the smell. Finishes with a sharp sour bite but never becomes overpowering. Integrates a sense of fruit with the sourness as well as any sour I can think of off hand. Never comes close to being sweet, mind you, but there are fruit notes all over the place here. A great tasting sour.

Mouthfeel is pretty solid despite the seeming lack of carbonation. Drinks a bit more carbonated than it looks, but this is still a very "slick" beer. None the less, the mouthfeel works well with the taste profile.

Overall this is one of the better sours i've had in terms of taste profile. It could use a little more carb, but that ultimately doesn't detract too much from it. A lot of fun and easy to drink. A very unabrasive sour (though admittedly I wonder how much of that is just my palate adjusting to sours over the years).

So this one the second one I tried.

It seems to have balanced out very well and seems that it would only get better. I could have swore the carb increased in the bottle since its release but not by that much.

A really good combo of fruit and sour. Posted this mostly because I think it has improved since bottling.
