I've reviewed this one on tap at the brewery; here it is in Cask at Brewgrass '09.

I have to say, a couple of things:

1) Reviewing is a completely subjective and contextually-bound enterprise. I could review the same beer on two different occasions and have somewhat different results. That being said,

2) This beer is good on tap, but I find it SUPERB on cask. The cask brings out a stronger, more appealing aroma, and an excellent chocolatey flavor. It's a bit thin on the finish.

I love cask ales. I wish they were more common in my neck of the woods.

Received as an extra in a trade probably 8 or so months ago that just kind of got lost in the fridge. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Poured a nice dark dark brown nearly black hue with a one finger mocha head that faded quickly to leave a thin sudsy halo and light wisps. 3.75 (x .05 = .186)

S - Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, lightly sweet malts, darker chocolate, nice caramel, faint metallic twinge though. 3.75 (x .2 = .75)

T - Taste is similar to the noce with nice roast, a bit darker, good chocolate, the malts are sweet but not in the way. Darker chocolate comes out along with some nice caramel. The metallic twinge is gone...there is a creamy flavour here, more akin to oats. Quite pleasant. 4 (x .45 = 1.8)

M - Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated almost overly so, creamy, alcohol hidden. That being said it does suffer from feeling a bit thin/watery. 3 (x .1 = .3)

O - Overall, fairly decent porter in a pinch. Nothing I would go back and revisit, but a solid enough offering from Green Man Brewery. Perhaps if fresher it would be closer to 4's. 3.75 (x .2 = .75)

On tap at the Brewpub.Poured a near jet black except for a tinge of ruby,a thin off white head atop.Picked up roast and bitter chocolate mainly in the nose, there was a light fruitiness underlying as well.Pretty well rounded flavors going on,somewhat roasty and earthy from the onset,a juicy fruitiness seems to come in late and makes it pretty balanced.A little thin but its a sociable porter, not half bad,I would liked to try on cask.

Dark brown with an auburn glow in the right light around the edges. Head is a couple fingers high at the start and recedes to a thin sheet and ring. Very light brown in head color. Aroma is creamy chocolate, something like green fresh coffee bean, vanilla, nicely malty, and a touch earthy. Taste is sweet, malty caramel and cocoa followed by a drawn out semi-bitter hoppiness, in the direction of pine, and resiny through the finish. Has a sprucy mintiness as well. Chocolate of various kinds...bittersweet, milky, dark, and cocoa-y... Pretty nice stuff. Good mouthfeel; creamy, silky soft, a liiiitle bit chewy.

On tap at the Biere Garden in Asheville.

A - black with a thin brown lacing of head

S - roasty with a big coffee presence

T - creamy, roasty, coffee, faint chocolate, mildly bitter finish

M - medium to full bodied, smooth, little carbonation

This is a nice, traditional porter. It has solid flavor and good drinkability. I would definitely have this again.

Had this one at the source on a past ticking trip to Asheville! Served from tap into a Green Man sampler shaker. Poured a massively dark brown with a one finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount very slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, earth, earth hop, dark chocolate, and nutty. The flavor was of sweet malt, earth, dark chocolate, nutty, and peanuts. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. My one question on this one is, where did all of this nuttiness come from? Holy moly! It would have been nice if it were only an undertone, but that amount was just a little bit too much to put this one in a good category. It however did not totally ruin the brew, but it definitely would have ranked higher if the nuttiness were toned back slightly.

Had this on tap at Dirty Jacks, but this growler was from Brawleys, nice to see growlers making it into the Charlotte area.

Full dark brown pour, thin finger of off white froth. Just barely sticks to the glass.

Aroma has the standard roast, earth, some cocoa.

A malty, bready porter. Roast malt, peat and light coffee. Earthy, pumpernikel like spiciness. Finishes pretty dry, hint of roast and cocoa.

Mouthfeel could be preceived as a bit thin, but it does border on creamy still. Alcohol non-existent and really drinkable in all seasons.
