No beer represents the taste of Asheville like 2013's clashing Asheville Brewers Alliances' Hoppy Saison! Twenty-two regioinal brewers have a hand in this hop forward, but authentically tasting Belgian farmhouse ale. The plethora of complexities come full circle for a simple and effective taste.

To the eye, the beer settles with a hazy straw appearance, giving up a slight milky complexion. Its billowing and frothy column of foam topples the glass and laces intricately as the foam retreats. Long in its retention, the ale looks straight out of the low lands of Southern Belgium.

Earthy, briny, and subtly sweet- the beer's bouquet opens up with citrus, damp hay, tart wine-like scents and a spice-forward counterpart. pepper, light cumin and fennel being the balance to lemons, tangy oranges and a note of under-ripened orchard fruit and berries. Mildly herbal and grassy, the beer turns early going in for the first taste.

Faint wheaty sweetness coaxes the early palate with dry bread and light dough. But that cacker-like taste turns fruity and spicy over the course of the middle palate. Pink grapefruit, orange zest, lemon peels, white grape and green apples all align for a tangy fruit flavor. On the other side of the field likes the herbal balance of fresh-cracked peppercorn, straw, fennel seed, light sage and soft coriander tempers the beer's fruit and sweetness even without hops. But its bitter finish is herbal and racy with lemongrass, freshly torn grass. leaf and sassafras.

Its medium-light body is largely due to the beer's mostly dry backbone and its expressive carbonation. The bubbles chase away its sweetness much like chardonnay. What's left is a honeycomb of malt structure with a bone dry finish. This exposes the beer's light acidity and highlights its bitterly dry closure.

Though Hoppy Saison is a hoppy saison, its no more so than many of the more authentic versions from the farmhands of Belgium. What is however unique is the use of American "citrusy" hops in conjunction with the more authentic hop flavors of Belgium. These numerous brewers do "Farmhouse" proud!

750ml bottle from 'bruisin. split, paired with some homemade wangs

served in funkwerks chalice - heavy carbonation makes the pouring process a chore. once settled, its a lovely orange body with sticky lacing. A collaboration of just about everyone in western NC - nicely hopped, very dry, fungus. Good stuff - a versatile beer prime for pairing.

Pours slightly hazy lightly burn orange with a big 2 finger foamy off white head that has good retention.

Smell has some great saison notes. Lots of black pepper phenols along with some lemongrass and grapefruit rind. Slight Vinegar sourness and a slight caramel malt sweetness.

Taste has some great spicy phenols forward some slight lemon and citrus rind and more black pepper. Saison yeast is very complex and has some great typical saison flavors. There is a notable hoppy presence, mainly herbal and slightly citrus hops are the main players that lead to a moderate bitterness.

Mouthfeel is decent. Huge amounts of carbonation. Medium to light body leave it a little too foamy with how high the amount of carbonation is. Slightly dry finish.
