Definitely the place to go in Altoona. Located in around a bunch of restaurants and close to the mall, so you don't have to go out of your way to get there. I gave it a 5.0 in selection because Central PA is inundated with crappy distributors, or those who only care (beer) light, relative to its competition there is no beating the brew zoo's selection. They can cater to those of us looking for microbrews, and those who just want a cheap case for a night with friends very well. Combine that with a friendly, albeit un-educated in beer, staff and pretty good prices and you'll never want to go anywhere else.

The selection is usually very good. The employees are not very knowledgeable although they are usually very friendly and helpful. One thing to look out for is "old" beer. They will have beer on the shelf that is well past the "best before date". This is especially true of the more expensive varieties.

All in all, not a bad place for beer.

Atmosphere - Located in a strip mall doesn't look all that exciting or bad. Walk in and there's the sales counter to the right and long rows of cases to browse. They have a good sized cooler in the back that has had most of the cases I bought back there.

Quality/Selection - The majority of the stock is your regular macro and import selection. There's a good row full of craft cases that are mostly from PA and surrounding states. I'm sure the selection would be better if it wasn't for the case law.

Service - The times I've been here have been great I've been greeted right away and asked if I knew what I wanted so they could grab it from the cooler. After looking around for a while they usually have the case I'm looking for in the back and quickly grab it for me.

Overall this seems like the best place to get beer in Altoona.

Probably THE best place to get beer in the Altoona area. Their selection is amazing. Almost too amazing! I usually spend a lot of time walking up and down the isles trying to decide which to buy. Prices are pretty reasonable with weekly sales that include some good steals on quality brews.

The employees aren't helpful when it comes to beer knowledge (most seem to be younger college age kids). But they are friendly, and they'll help you get the beer to the car.

One finer point that I like about the Brew Zoo is the fact that they have quite a few variety cases available. They often include 3 or 4 different beers/styles which works well for a guy like me who is new to beer tasting and likes to try.

Easily the best distibutor I've been to in the Bedford/Johnstown/Altoona/Ebensburgh area. It's located on Plank Road in the same plaza as Olive Garden and all the crap. The place is really nicely set up, with all the macros right as you walk in (which the section is easily bypassed). There is a whole long ass row of good micros, including Troeg's, Victory, Allagash, Penn, and a TON of others. They also had cases of Chimay and Corsendonk (unheard of for this area). The service wasn't bad, although I kinda had a feeling they had no idea what we were buying, and didn't really care. As far as price goes, they had the cheapest case of Mad Elf I've seen yet. Everything else was resonably priced as well. Definitly a place to stop at if you're in the area.
