Ah, Shakespeare's, I've been to the place so many times now I could probably walk from the front door, to the register, to the bar, and then to the bathroom while wearing a blindfold. It's a really fun place to visit, and in a place like Columbia, it's one of the top hang-out spots there is. Why?

Well, this is a pizza place first and foremost, and make no mistake: the food is excellent. The staff is super-friendly, but if you're at the bar, expect a maddeningly long wait on Fridays and Saturdays (particularly for football games). They always keep a good sense of humor about them, if they aren't always prompt, and the atmosphere makes it a place where having fun is tremendously easy.

As for the beer selection, well, for a place that keeps its main focus on pizza, they keep a really nice assortment of bottles in the bar. Bell's, Rogue, New Belgium, Duvel, Chimay Red, are some of what you can expect when you go in there. The tap selection is the usual Columbia arrangement of Blue Moon, Fat Tire, etc., however, the seasonal tap is always a good place to find a good beer. I've seen Two-Hearted Ale, Founder's Breakfast Stout, Samuel Adams Noble Pils, and so on go through that bar, so major plus on that. My biggest gripe is that you only have one type of glass to select: a pint glass, and you have to be sure they have one ready to go on super-busy nights. Then again, it's a pizza place.

If you live in, visit, or pass through Columbia, you should definitely have a look at this place. I think it recently won #1 College Hang-Out in some contest, too. If you make it anytime before the night crowd rushes in, you should have an all-positive experience.

Shakespeare's is a really good pizza joint that is a Columbia landmark. I can't get enough of it. The atmosphere is great. Cool memorabilia and great characters working on the pizza. As for the beer, this is not a beer bar, but it has a fairly good sized collection of craft brews. I'd say around 25 really good options. Bottles of Bell's, Rogue, and Schafly are always on hand. Tap handles usually include some Boulevard and New Belgium products (like 1554). They even have some good pint cans like Murphy's and Guinness. Basically, if you want really good beer with great pizza this is the place to be.
