Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a bright, vibrant, yellow-gold coloring with a filmy, clingy, white coating of head. The nose is roasty and floral, with some buttery highlights. Light and inviting aromas. Great lacing along the glass as you drink. The beer has smooth, roasty, and crisp flavors, with a roasted grain backbone. Very smooth and balanced. Roasted/toasted cereal aftertaste, with a smooth, clean finish. Very good beer.

I had the chance to visit RI and some dear friends down there. As a side trip, I was able to go to Coddington Brewpub with one of said friends so that he could meet with a client. I'm glad I went, it's a nice place with a place mat that has diagrams of their brewing process. I think I picked the wrong beer though! Here's my review!

A- Pale gold, straw colored.

S- Grassy, very Pilsner-like, some bready malts coming through after the initial sniff.

T- Some citrus notes, light malts, grass. Hops come through at the finish, bitter, slight pine, some grapefruit.

M- Based on the mouthfeel and how hot it was yesterday even for RI standards, I could drink this all day. Crisp, refreshing, definitely nice.

O- I have had better, but then again I played it safe considering that this style is very simple. I generally look at the "simple" brews to base my critique on a brewery. If they can't get a simple style right, it's not worth the time to return. This one hits the mark, but I think I'll try something more adventurous next time.

Poured in a 7 oz. sample glass as part of a beer flight at the Coddington Brewpub in Middletown, RI.

A: Poured a light, pale straw yellow color with a frothy head of white foam which left great lacing.

S: Fresh grain, light citrus essence and some metallic aromas.

T: Lightly toasted, buttery bread and a zesty grain taste balanced with some dry, mild herbal hopping. Don't really pick up too much wheat or yeast flavors.

M: Light and crisp with a sort of watery quality and a dry finish.

D: The low ABV and high drinkability of a blonde with some more character. Not a bad choice to wash down a meal or quench your thirst after outdoor activities in the sun, but not a whole lot to keep going back to otherwise.

Draught @ Brewpub: This one poured a crystal clear pale yellow color with a small white head on it. The aroma was very weak. Good, but just almost nothing there. Faint notes of malts and grassiness. The taste is equally light. Just a slight taste of malts and grassy hops. Very much a starter beer. Good for the Bud Light crew only.

On tap at the Coddington Brew Pub.

Poured a lighter yellow color with a smaller sized white head. The Aromas were dominated by a graininess. Tastes of the same graininess as well with some sweet malts in the finish. This was drinkable but not memorable.

On-tap 2/13/08 at the brewpub, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains a little fruit, wheat, light malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste is decently balanced with some fruity sweetness up front from some beery flavors, along with some light flavors of wheat and hops. The malt character is thin. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, light body, medium carbonation, finish is clean and dry.

D: A little tasty, goes down easily, not filling at all, mild kick, decent representation of style, it's a good lighter beer but not one that I would pick again.

Coddington Golden Ale pours a very light golden color beneath a short head of bright-white foam. The head retention is average, as is the lacing. I was surprised to find that it was an ale as it was so clean, and it seemed to have a bit of sulphur in the nose (or was that DE blow-through from their filter...?). Medium-light bodied and crisp in the mouth. Very little malt and next to no hops in the flavor. Some very mild apple character. Solid bitterness. Finishes short and dry but a little harsh in the finish (again, some DE blow-through?). This one is definitely for the cross-over crowd, but at the same time, if they put this much effort into a beer that they probably don't really care about, then how much better are the beers that they really have passion for?

On tap at the Marriott in Newport, RI
It poured a pale golden color with a medium-sized pure white head and plenty of sticky lacing.
It has a grainy malt smell. The smell of a desert after a light rain comes to mind.
A drying malt taste with some minor sweetness gives off a bit of a harsh hay-like after taste.
The hops provide a sharp-edged spicy bite. The hop flavor fades really fast, leaving behind a hard water flavor.
The mild astringent bitterness lingers into the background.
Not a favorite of mine.
