Having lived in Cambridge, this is my staple pub of choice in Houston. The best times to frequent are the off hours when there's only a few folks inside. At such times, you almost forget you're in 'Htown' and, despite the tellys showing American sports and ceiling fans galore, you might even believe you were in the UK. One huge PLUS: they have Belhaven's Twisted Thistle IPA on tap. Alas, a lovely beer with whom to fall in love. The food is indeed consistently exceptional. Pricing tend to be on the higher side of reasonable.

A very traditional English/Irish type pub, well for this kind of pub in America anyway. I do like the feel of this place. Relaxed with a fireplace and lots of red leather booths about. A Relatively small horseshoe shape wood bar with some nooks and crannies. A nice little patio outside. Very clean. Kind of an upscale Richmond Arms. The food here is decent. Not a very big menu. I had the fish and chips. Pretty typical for this type of pub. There were also some "Nibbles" on the menu and some expensive specialties. Huge portions though. The patrons that visit this bar are more middle age. Some families as well. Again, very relaxed. The service was good. I was seated quickly, and my food arrived before I knew it. Overall though, this place is expensive. $7 for a pint, and the food was not cheap at all.

Anyway, on to the beer. Not the most extensive selection in town. There are a lot of the typical English beers. About 12 in all. All imperial pints. Guinness, Bass, Harp ext. They have a lot of Belhaven. I enjoyed the Twisted Thistle. No micros besides Bridgeport IPA (I wish more of these places would carry their ESB). They also had some Fuller's on tap. Quality of taps are a bit iffy, not uncommon for a dirty line or old keg. The bottle list is unremarkable. Only Chimay Red and a few Sam Smith beers to note. Other than that BMC.

Overall a decent place to relax and have a few pints, and a meal with friends. Though don't expect the selection of the Saucer, or even the likes of Stags Head or Richmond Arms.

My new favorite bar. Comfortable, non-cliched British pub atmosphere. Free darts, dirty cartoons in the bathroom. Friendly, helpful staff.

Food? Kinda pricey but good nonetheless. There's often a daily special that provides the real value. Otherwise, I normally just drink.

Beer? Not too many taps (maybe a dozen?) But mostly decent. Of course there's Guinness and Bass and Stella, but also Twisted Thistle, a Young's (St. George?), Hoegaarden, Bridgeport IPA (delicious when fresh!) and Real Ale Fireman's #4. All drafts are served in imperial pint glasses, and during happy hour (which is all day on Sundays), drafts are $4. Not too bad a deal. Otherwise, drafts are $6, which I guess is a tad high. Just a couple bottles but they do have 750s of Chimay Premiere for something like $12. That's not a bad deal either.

Lots of scotch, including the most expensive scotch I've ever seen at a bar (Sauternes barrell aged... can't recall the brand).

-=[Atmosphere]=-
This place was recommended to me by an ex-pat. Red Lion is a traditional English pub but primarily filled with yuppies from the inner city. The red leather couches are nice. We took a seat near the fireplace. We happen to be there on a crowded night, so available seating was preyed upon.

-=[Service]=-
Service was good. No complaints. Then again we ordered a few beers.

-=[Selection]=-
They had a moderate select. I happe to drink a Twisted Thistle IPA on draft.

I did not grub on any food there, but the menu showed tradional English dishes.

A traditional British pub with wood-paneled interiors, a cozy fireplace and red leather upholstery. When the weather is actually nice, they also have a large patio out front. They have a pretty good beer selection with the usual imports and a few domestic micros (Live Oak and Bridgeport). The food menu includes snacks, sandwiches and traditional English plates such as Shepherds Pie and Bangers & Mash. Free Indian pizza bites and spicy quesadillas during happy hour. Waitress are very friendly and knowledgeable about the beer and other drinks. Definitely a places worth stopping at for a pint.
