A locally sourced grocery store.
I highly recommend for both food and brews. There selection is a little smaller, but very good considering and they have several local options.
This might be the best place for to go beers in the downtown area.

Unlike the Coralville location, this New Pioneer store is shoved into a downtown corner of Iowa City, with very limited space and a rather cramped parking lot..
Regional breweries are pretty well represented, with Millstream, Boulevard, Goose Island, etc, etc. Some popular European brews stocked as well.
To be honest, I've stumbled across better selections in many other grocery stores by accident. Sure, for a grocery store, the selection is pretty decent, but I really didn't think they had anything here that would be worth going out of your way to find. I tried to find something to buy here, but left without picking up anything. A couple brews I looked at had passed their "Best before" dates also. A much better layout at the Coralville shop with a similar assortment of brews...so if you need to check one out to see what it's like, I'd hit the other one first.

I thought I was going to see a beer selection, but I found a fancy organic store with a little beer selection...the only thing I saw was a good selection of Rogues. No one was around for any questions, it was a grocery store. If they were they would have probably not known about beer. The prices matched the store, fancy. I will never go here unless they have something, one thing, that no one else has. All of the beer is in the second aisle as you walk in, I saw the same selection before at HyVee Wine and Spirits. Not too well taken care of, just left there and never moved until they are supposed to look pretty. I have worked at a grocery store before.
Like I said, maybe again.

I always go to this store when I'm picking up meat for the BBQ. It just so happens that this place has a quality selection of beer as well. Most of the time I usually just go the extra 3-4 blocks to John's for the beer, but the meat and veggies from this place are amazingly fresh and organic. When I'm not in the mood to make 2 different stops, the beer selection here is sufficient.

The staff is composed entirely of volunteer workers (this is a co-op grocery store after all), so you'll be lucky to find somebody who knows much about the beer, but everybody seems to be friendly.

The selection isn't enormous by any means, but if you ever find yourself in the co-op before the tailgate at an Iowa game, you aren't likely to be disappointed. At first I thought this place was entirely BMC free, but I noticed a few single 22 oz cans on my last visit. Other than that, the selection is all micro or import. Most of the selections are in a cooler shelf, but there is a small selection of beer on the room-temperature shelves opposite the cooler. I haven't noticed any dusty or expired beers, so it seems as if it fairly well maintained.

Prices are reasonable. There is a 5% surcharge for non-members of the co-op, but that's hardly a strain on the old pocket book unless you're spending enough money here each month that it warrants paying the membership fee.

Not very highly recommended if you're coming in from out of town, but for local shopping it is worthy of being added, and the food of course is great. Support your local co-op.
