2013 On tap at the Brewhouse
A: Light lacing; very dark brown, no light getting through this.
S: Bourbon up front with hints of chocolate.
T: Bourbon flavor, a little heat, and a good chocolate flavor on the end that lingers and makes me want to keep drinking it.
M: Moderately thick, heavy and sticky on the palate.
O: A very good BA stout. Glad I was able to score a couple of the 200 bottled to have on a future day.

A - jet black brew with light brown fluffy head.
S - oak, sweetness, medium notes of bourbon on the nose.
T - moderate bourbon flavor, chocolate, sweetness, and light malty taste.
M - little to no alcohol burn, well carbonated, well done.
O - overall is a delightful brew on tap. Looking forward to trying it in the bottle and aging it as well to see how everything melds together.

Enjoyed on tap at FOBAB. Served in a my FOBAB taster glass.

A: Pours a very dark black color with a thick, tan head forming on the pour. It recedes slowly leaving behind nice sheets of lace.

S: Bourbon, dark fruits and caramel up front. There is an underlying roasted malt notes that's paired with some oak in the periphery.

T: Wow. Dark chocolate bitterness and milk chocolate sweetness seem to be going back and forth over the palate. Decadent fudge, smooth bourbon and sweet caramel notes as well.

M: Medium low carbonation with a heavy ad creamy body. Goes down incredibly smooth and highly drinkable for 9.60%.

O: This was sneaky hit for me. I've heard great things about this and didn't even realize it was at the fest until I stumbled across it. I went back for a second pour and I'm glad I did. I'd love to get a bottle of it.

First beer sampled at ABR, and I went back for multiples. Dark and thick looking, aroma has plenty of barrel/vanilla/chocolate character. Tastes is similar... dark chocolate, bourbon etc. etc. Mouthfeel's thick and almost chewy.

This beer stood out to me in its insane chocolate character and pretty much perfect barrel presence. I would take some points off if chocolate was actually added to it but otherwise it's nothing short of awesome. Put some chillies in it... might actually work! Will drink like what I wanted Black Butte anniversary beers to be.

Had a glass of this yesterday during lunch at the brewpub. Served into a small glass of some sort that was not a snifter:

A - A really rich brewed coffee black and brown color with nice but alightly thin mocha head. Great foam ring on the outsides with great lacing retention. Really nice murky clouds and bubbles in the middle.

S - A really nice dark roast with hints of a sweet caramel, bakers fudge and some coffee cake. Sweet, fresh bourbon, damp oak and vanilla. Bits of cream and sugar.

T - Really, really bourbon fowards with lots of damp, booze soaked oak. Bits of tobacco leaf, leather and hints of vanilla. Tons of bourbon. This one will definitely benefit from some age for sure.

M - Its got a really good amount of carbonation for its style and ABV. Pretty creamy and smooth. There is a bit of a burn from the booze however.

O - I really enjoyed this one and was happy to see it on tap. I picked up a few bottles a while ago and haven't got around to trying them, but now that I know what it tastes like, I really looking forward to letting them age a bit. Really, really bourbon forward on the taste, and if you're a bourbon lover, this one is right up your alley. Too bad the bottle counts are under 300 on this one, so if you have a change to try it/trade for it, I'd highly recommend it. Fantastic brew.

Served in a small tulip. Solid black color with just a ring of foam around the glass. No lacing, which often happens with barrel aged beers.

Rich malts, big sweetness, some roast, oak, vanilla and light bourbon scents.

Very big taste, but it did leave me wanting more of the bourbon to come through. Very sweet, with notes of oak, vanilla, toffee, burnt sugar and bourbon. A warm alcohol presence, but the bourbon was just a bit subdued for my liking.

Full and syrupy, but smooth. Not a whole lot of carbonation, but enough.

A solid barrel aged RIS that I would have again. Worth trying if you ever do come across it.

This batch was a blend of two barrels - Maker's Mark and Woodford Reserve. I've had this a few times in the past, but I've always been too lazy to take notes. On-tap at FoBAB 2011, and served in the commemorative taster glass.

A - Minimal foam - only a thin ring of bubbles, a few wisps, and no lacework. Pitch black body.

S - Holy bourbon! There's vanilla, cocoa, some roasted grain, and a ridiculous amount of bourbon. It's not overly fusel, but it smells a lot like Maker's Mark with some of the edge taken off. Good, but some additional age would improve things quite a bit.

T - The taste also has a ridiculous amount of bourbon present. Behind it there's a some oaky vanilla and milk chocolate, wiht a licorice finish, but this is pretty much spicy bourbon all the way. Somewhat comical actually.

M - Medium-full body, low carbonation, smooth and creamy texture. There's some definite heat, and I refuse to believe this beer is only 9.6% - if it is I'd be completely shocked.

D - Why the heck is there so much bourbon? I think this might have been rushed to get it into the festival, because this needs some time to mellow out. I remember enjoying this substantially more in previous years, so hopefully I'll get a chance to revisit (and re-review) this beer. Tasty, but ultimately it's hard to drink more than a few ounces.

Served three times @ FOBAB.

Black as my soul pour with a thin head... more of a head than I thought possible for such a bourbon bomb!

Smells of sweet bourbon, wood, chocolate, vanilla and hints of sugars. Divine!

More of the same in the taste but add in layers of caramel, maple and coffee. It's very smooth and creamy and the mouthfeel is picture perfect for a barrel aged beer. The barrel ushers the taste along swimmingly.

This is an absolute joy of a BA stout. Looking forward to the next bottle release.

Originally reviewed on November 12, 2005. On tap at the brewpub. Frothing at the head, thick bubbling coffee with cream and hazelnut rich head. PITCH black with swirling apparitions and no glints or fringes. Consistency of oil. Aroma BLASTS forom the beer of freshly ground Guatamala coffee hinted with cinnaomon and ginger, running with lots of deep, dry chocolate. There’s fruit in there too, raspberries, italian cherries, pears and apples. The flavor is one thing: heaven. Ridiculous. It’s like every pleasurable and sinful flavor rolled into one silky concotions that sails into you. I could drink this for hours and hours and hours and never get tired of the ecstacy it delivers. There’s a profusion of Turkish coffee, those white and black Dutch chocolates, a touch of roasted chiles, andes mint with drippings of kahlua and creme de mente, oh so gentle. Lightly backed with the oaky ridgidness of an aged Scotch. It has first, second and third phase. First a fruit delight, with emaciated cherries, raisins, cranberries, apricots, pears, figs, candied pumpkin and all of this drizzled over a bourbon and brandy suppleness. None of the alcohol notes are overly hot, just gently caressing the nose with a glowing warmth of the finest brandy earth has to over. It’s calvados on steroids. Second, a burgeoning blast of the roasted Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans, mingled with bittersweet melted Belgian chocolate, shrouded with dried black cherries and orange peel. A hint of spanish jamon and a hint of vinous notes creep in from the edges. Lastly, a seductive and smooth silk flowage of fresh cold irish creme and tawdry balances of brown sugar and molasses, this combines with background hints of lingonberry and black currant. The palate is enlightening in so many ways. It’s smooth, silky, sticky, clinging, oaky, dry, sweet and culminating all in one sweep. Alcohol lifting it into the sinuses for exhiliration and completion. It’s like a fantastic, euphoric orgasm, all from beer. I was skeptical at first, but this beer has made me a true believer. I have not seen a finer beer produced on this planet.

On-tap at the brewpub: Served in a 10oz "Nonic" style pub glass - Extremely limited edition, one keg only and no growlers available for purchase, hell, the staff was not even offered samples, if they wanted to try it they had to buy it it at full price.

Solidly opaque deep, dark brown body, close enough to black its black. Finger high fluffy cocoa brown head sits briefly which resides slowly to a hazy skim and thickly placed globby sheets of lacing.

Straight up lovely nice whisky aromamtic nose. Great oaky twinge over the top. Behind each wiff sits some terrific notes of soft and dry bakers chocolate, quite thick and rich, lush to be sure, and some burnt caramel to boot. Yum!

Taste is full of all kinds of chocolate laced with bourbon, nice little burn and grab of bourbon oak barrel singe and sweetness. Especially towards the finish. Lots of boubon heat and oaky tinges. But the chocolateyness just keeps giving with a rich cake-like thickness and brownie soothness with a smooth roasty edge. Chocolatey-rific!

Feel is well heated and bourbony, round, creamy, thickly smooth body thats just about medium. Good warmth within and has a bit of spice to finish off the residual chocolate tones but most of it returns to stick like a fine dark chocolate.

One fine drinkin' little Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout, was aged for 6 months and showed. Perhaps a bit young yet, if it lasts any longer then a month this would be much more drinkable. Still, this was one fine example of what a boubon barrel can do to an already great beer. When I had it at Winterfest and they said it was going to be re-released as a Barrel aged, I was hyped, and now I'm glad I was able to try it.

A: Black with just a hint of brown color. Healthy tan head recedes into a collar.
S: Starts with some nice fudgy aroma followed by a big dose of bourbon and a bit of oxidation. Smells like it will be a more sweet/bourbon desserty than roasted.
T: Wow this has really mellowed. Hershey’s chocolate syrup, vanilla, bourbon has died down to a pretty mild level, finishes very dry with a very nice dry cocoa flavor. Alcohol is very mild at this point.
M: Body is medium/full – fairly on par for a barrel aged stout, carbonation is very low at this point. Dry.

Right now this is closer to a 4, but am rating it based on where I projected the sweet spot (between fresh, when it was hot and now, a little past its prime).

I think this bottle was roughly 2 or 3 years old. Thought a recent bottle share in PDX was the perfect time to open this up.

The beer pours a darkish brown color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is quite attractive in this beer, as I pick up noticeable bourbon (but it's not overdone), coffee, dark chocolage and vanilla. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely, and I have to say this a very easy to drink BA RIS. Mouthfeel is where this beer really shines. The finish is very, very long, and the beer is oh so smooth on the palate (likely from the extended aging in my cellar). The beer is moderately sweet, but not overly so, and the alcohol is very well integrated into the flavor profile. Drinkability is outstanding.

Impressive beer, no doubt. Thanks Garrett!

2011 vintage. Bottle 249/276. Tasted 18 October 2013.

Pours black, thick and viscous. One finger of medium-tan head, okay retention, not much lacing.

Smell is a rich, sweet, bourbony stout. A little heavy on the bourbon, so it comes across a touch unbalanced. But otherwise it's oh so nice.

Taste is rich and smooth. Molassees, lots of dark fruit. Dark and sweet. Lacking a little in depth, but really tasty.

Feel is rich and chewy. Almost top-notch, but could use just a touch more carbonation.

This a delicious barrel-aged imperial stout. It didn't quite live up to my hopes, but it's really good. Primary complaint is a slight conflict between the barrel and the base, and I'd like more depth and complexity.

A - Pours dark engine oil black and starts with a thin but even layer of toffee colored head that dies down quickly and leaves a thin lacing. Thick and viscous.

S - Butter toffee, caramel, coffee beans, dark roasted malt, bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, and alcohol.

T - Dark chocolate, vanilla, oak, coffee beans, dark roasted malt, and bourbon. (There's some molasses buried way down there too.) Lots of oak, bourbon and dark chocolate. Alcohol effervescence.

M - Rich, full body, thick, viscous, and lip smacking sticky.

O - This beer was a surprise tonight, I didn't know what to expect and thoroughly enjoyed it. If possible, try and trade for one!

Another tip of the hat to Steasy66 for this, cheers man! 2012 bottle (pretty sure anyways), 380/500.

Appearance. Pours dark brown, fairly black in the glass but honestly looks quite thin for a RIS. Anywho, appearance is pretty minor for the guy with two thumbs. Capped with almost a finger of pale tan head.

Smell. Now we're talkin'! Chocolate fudge, some nice woody bourbon and coffee, a little vanilla and fresh fig. Nice.

Taste. Whoa, very tangy. Most definitely infected. Too bad because there's still some nice chocolate and coffee under all that sourness.

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body, medium carbonation.

Overall. I hate to rate an infected beer, but if that's what a brewery is going to put out, that's how I'm going to rate it. Bummer because this sounds like a good beer when it's on.

Quickly receding head, down to nothing. Body is jet black.

Big time chocolate notes. Vanilla undertones. Very nice.

On the sweeter side, less roast than I'd like. Barrel notes of prominent vanilla and coconut, which I like a lot. Drinks larger than the stated 9.8%abv.

Very low carbonation. Medium mouthfeel.

Appearance and mouthfeel leave a little to be desired but besides that BA Eddy Fitz is solid. Thanks for the trade jawzman!

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. 2011 bottle, I think. Bottle #181/276.

Appearance - Black with a small khaki head. A little bit of glass staining. Not much retention.

Smell - Sharp bourbon. Lots of liquor. Nice vanilla. Caramel and some dark roasted malts.

Taste - Again it has a ton of bourbon. Sharp bourbon flavor covers up most of the beer. Tons of caramel and some milk chocolate. Just a touch of burnt malt.

Mouthfeel - Barrel hot, but the beer isn't. Medium body. Low carbonation.

Overall - I wanted more from this, but it's good. I really like the bourbon, but the base stout could use more stoutiness.

Bottle 73/500

Pours a dark brown, not black. Minimal head and no light passage. The nose starts with caramel and fudge with a heavy boozy bourbon quality that adds a bit of harshness along with oak and vanilla. The taste is fudgy up front with notes of cream, chocolate, and bourbon. Again, the bourbon is hot like it is on the nose which adds a bit of astringency to the profile. The body is thick with very light carbonation. Overall, a nice bourbon barrel stout that probably could benefit from a little age to mellow it out around the edges.

Served in a snifter.

Bottle #73/500. I hope Gordon Lightfoot is collecting some royalties from these brewers... Anyway, this stuff pours a very dark black-brown topped by a finger of sandstone foam. The nose comprises boozy bourbon, dry oak, mild roasted malts, and plenty of cocoa. The taste brings in more of the same, along with a decent helping of coffee. Frankly, this is the epitome of the flavor of barrel-aged coffee stouts. The body is a hefty medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a chewy feel. Overall, a pretty tasty brew, one that conquers the other ore-carrying-ship-named beer I'm familiar with (and also makes me long for a barreled version of that one...). Good times.

Thanks to mista for this one...somehow I managed to miss this damn release, again. 750ML bottle, 456/500, split with my wife.

Pour is jet black into a matching pair of snifters. The nose of the Fitz is a beautiful shotgun marriage of sweet chocolate & barrel. That's it. Who needs anything else? Not subtle, but gorgeous.

Bourbon Barrel Aged Edmund Fitzgerald is as smooth as butt-slid ice: wow. Wonderful milk chocolate up front, big sweetness, bare roast, before the bourbon kicks in & kicks everything else out of the house. Mid-palate is all palate-numbing bourbon & pure vanilla. Kissy-face of licorice right on the end. Creamy, & did I mention smooth? I'm going to have trouble letting his warm all the way up to room temp. I think there might be a hole in the glass. And my tummy is getting very warm.

If this isn't the Stan the Man of beers, it's at least Lou Brock. Wickedly bourbon, this is an excellent beer that's just shy of the tippy-top shelf. Wish I had eight more. Wait, I know where I can find eight more...hmmm...

750ml corked and cage bottle (I am 99% sure this is the 2011 release - bottle 163 or 276) poured into a Dogfish Head signature glass.

A - Pours a deep dark brown color, good clarity around the edges...gives a bit of a thin appearance. A short finger of dark tan foam fizzes away fairly quickly leaving behind a thick collar around the glass.

S - This might be the most chocolatey smelling beer I've experienced. Super cocoa, milk chocolate aroma up front, hershey's syrup. Sweet on the nose, medium intensity bourbon, some molasses. Smells syrupy overall...not overly sweet, but a bit concentrated/reduced.

T - Chocolate comes thru loud and clear in the flavor as well. Darker chocolate mix overall - cocoa, baker's chocolate, still some milky sweet/smooth chocolate though. HInts of burnt malt, coffee, and more heavy cacao dark chocolate - 80%-ish dark. Bourbon is well integrated...probably one of the better examples of high quality bourbon barrels resulting in high quality bourbon influenced beer. Sweet, a bit of warmth on the back of the throat...just enough alcohol presence without being overdone. I can't get over how rich and chocolatey this beer tastes.

M - Medium bodied, perhaps a bit thin for the style. Warm alcohol presence, just a tingle on the lips. Dark roast, burnt, and very chocolatey...very balanced tho a touch on the sweet side, but with plenty of bitter to smooth out. Carbonation is light and appropriately so for the style and this particular example. Faint bubbles of life, but yielding an overall creaminess and smoothness on the tongue...a bit oily and coating on the tongue.

O - Overall, a rather outstanding barrel aged imperial stout. I didn't know what to expect out of this beer...my first experience with this brewery and a beer I'd never heard of when I got it. Turned out to be a very nice surprise. Super chocolatey throughout with well integrated barrel influence. One of the better beers I've had in a while.

Bottle number 22 of 35...lowest bottle count of a beer I have tried before.

A - pours out of the bottle black with a taupe/chocolate head, very mocha-esque

S - bourbon spiciness is mixed in with milk chocolates. A light, fruity, tobacco aroma is also coming out of the glass.

T - milk chocolates and vanilla is upfront. these move on to spicy bourbon notes, which rounds out the flavor profile. Pretty solid barrel aged RIS...although this flavor description doesn't provide much complexity, this is a nice tasting beer.

M - smooth, creamy, and full

D - nice bourbon barrel RIS. Smooth, yet hot. This is very aromatic and the flavor profile melds nice, complementary flavors together in a great way. I would recommend, but this one would be impossible to get.

I love me my bourbon beers!

A- Totally opaque, inky, oily brown/black pour. Half finger of really short lived off white head. Lacing is minimal at best, what would you expect from a stout aged in two different bourbon barrels.

S- Okay, where to begin... Bourbon is predominant in the front. Smooth, velvety loving warmth from the bourbon barrels. Dark chocolate, loads of vanilla, brown sugar, licorice and oak coming through in the nose of this monster. It's so complex and decadent I can't stop smelling it.

T- Vanilla wallop up front (which I love in bourbon beers) dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee, brown sugar, and a touch of anise before finishing with a nice oak presence.

M- Full bodied, still quite lively carbonation for such a big beer and a bourbon aged. Sticky on the lips.

O- This thing in front of me is absolutely fantastic! It's literally art in a bottle, the bourbon choices are not only fantastic but compliment the beer and each other. I am thrilled and honored to be able to try this beer that I would never had the chance normally.

Poured from 750ml corked and caged bottle into Globe glass.

A. Pours about 1 finger head. Good retention. Not a lot of lacing. Color is all black. Head is a moderate tan color.

S. Smell is all bourbon barrel stout. Lets see there is molasses, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, bourbon, alcohol.

T. Coffee, milk chocolate, roasted malt, espresso, molasses. Lot of coffee flavor going on then a bit of vanilla, and some oak. Smooth. Very easy driking barrel aged stout. Even more really nice vanilla flavors come out as it warms

M. Medium full bodied. Has a pretty nice creamy texture, but not full on chewy. Medium carbonation.

O. Overall this is a pretty delicous bourbon barrel aged stout. What can I say, but I am a sucker for a well done barrel aged stout that can bring out nice vanilla flavor. This beer does the trick. Really looking forward to trying the Decadence and Framboise. So far I am impressed with Fitger's.

Fitger’s Bourbon Ed

Poured into a tulip glass from a 750ml bottle.

Pours a nice dark dark oily black with a nice dense tan head. Almost like the nice foam on a fresh cup of espresso. (4.5)

Aroma off sweet Bourbon starts off with some nice dark fruit hints. There is a very nice aroma of dark fruits and some nice wood in there as well. Notes of raisins and some nice espresso, Coffee roast can also be perceived as well as some nice oat like malt notes. Slight dark chocolate notes as well as some nice milk chocolate sweetness. (4.5)

Taste starts off with and intense boozy Bourbon notes and some nice sweetness. This is followed by some nice roast and coffee notes they dominate the majority of the palette. Slight vanilla notes are present with some woody notes as well. This brew has tons of Bourbon notes with some nice boozy sweetness and some nice oak notes and some vanilla spice. The mouthfeel is nice and medium but could be a bit thicker IMO. (4.5)(4.5)

Good solid brew with nice bourbon notes and some roast present as well. The coffee notes are very present throughout the brew and help temper some of the booze. (4.5)
