Poured from growler into snifter. Bottled July 15, 2014.
A: Pours a dark straw-brown with mild carbonation producing a 1/2 inch light tan head that quickly dissipates. (4)
S: Sweet caramel malt and bready yeast. (3.5)
T: Sweet caramel malt, bourbon booze, with mild hops in the background. One day after opening, this one actually is a bit better. The wheat notes, banana, and clove are much stronger. (4)
M: Moderately heavy body. Sweet and fairly oily feel. Mildly bitter finish with fairly strong booze burn (vanilla and bourbon here). The ABV is actually hidden a bit...drinks lighter than the strong 11.5% that it is. (4.25)
D: A definite sipper. A nice example of style. Fitger's did a nice job with this one. I'd recommend saving some for the next day...it actually gets better. (4)

Sampled at ABR. Fitger's definitely brought their A game to the fest.

This beer is how I expected wheatwines to taste like even before I had my first; I ended up drinking Nemesis 2009 instead. But, whatever.

This is a wheat beer first and a barrel aged strong ale later. Looks hazy gold-amber, with clove and esters jumping at ya. Tastes juicy and fruity with barrels only in the backdrop (I wish they were heavier). There's a very bold and delicious maltiness to the taste, and the beer is very sweet. At the same time, it is amazing how clean it finishes. Body is thick and sticky almost. I dug it and I am glad I got to try it!

On tap at the Duluth brewhouse. Labeled at 11.1%. This is the 2008 batch.

A: Pale, somewhat cloudy drab brown. Some of the color of raisins. Light frothy soft head. Nice lace.

S: Raisins, tawny port, alcohol. A little spice.

T: Tawny port, bourbon, dried dark fruit, dates. Light bitter on the end helps mitigate alcohol heat. A bit savory.

M: Drying but initially rich with a lingering oiliness. You can really get the wheat texture.

D: High ABV but insanely delicious. Worth going to Duluth just for this one!

Much remains the same but this really has some vanilla, nougat, caramel barrel aged notes although it wasn't listed as barrel aged....what a fucking treat this is...a lot of the doughy/bready notes...plums too...no hint of alcohol....awesome beer(and I've got 4/5's of the growler to look forward to).

Original Review=4.25 (11-4-05)

This is a dangerous beer...so easy drinking and tasty but 11.5%..I was planning on doing this growler in two nights but it might just go tonight...

Pours a cinnamon color...reddish hue....flat... body is on the high side of medium...low carbonation....almost slippery.

Nose is subtle...rum like...some doughiness

Taste is sweet tropical fruits...plums....light spiciness.

Very nice brew...I do like wheat wines a lot and wish they were brewed more often...this is a solid effort...I think it's been aged awhile and it seems really smoothed out...

(Morning after)..ended up stopping after three pints....glad I did....let's just say the ABV is legit...now I've got some more to look forward to tonight..

On-Tap at the brewpub: Dark musty gold with a slight bronze shade. Small head of off-white foam sits breifly to kinda dull out to a few bubbles at the collar. Gooey lacing is strewn about in a few straggly strings and blobby patches.

Big malt aroma of sweet oily fruit cocktail sauce squishing pineapple, mango, banana, dark orange, and pear, and red grapes within a slight rummy-like warmth drizzled with a light caramel and pinched with a creative grassy spice.

Taste is just nice as the aroma. Big, fat, thick, and malt-a-lishous. Lots of tropical fruityness takes the palate within a warm, buttery soft ride of smooth succulant maltyness that drips all sorts of pineapple, pear, mango, orange, banana, caramel, and warmed sauces and juices from the fruit bowl from which it was soaked in rum and spiced with cinnamon and herbal grasses. Its a wowful ride of yummyness.

Oh my, oh my, oh my...this stuff is heavenly thick and warm. So soft, creamy, full, saucy, and syrupy. Richly coating and everything nice. Like a warmed ice cream sunday.

A fantastic fuckin' beer from Fitger's.

The warmth catches up to ya quick as you down it easily at first. But man this stuff is awesome! Loved it!

Slight haze in dark copper body. Small, ringy, off-khaki to cream head. Nose of fruit (banana, cherry, fruit cocktail), rummy alcohol (esters?), and sugar. Yum. Taste starts with a toasted, toffeeish malt that soon gets sweet and fruity. Rummy, booze-soaked fruits take over and wow! This is a big beer! Spicy, banana wheat bitterness in a long, very warming finish. Full-bodied, with a syrupy, thick feel. Very smooth for such a strong beer and I better not drink this whole growler tonight!

Originally reviewd February 20, 2005. On tap at the brewpub. Murky auburn pour, with off-white sustaining head. Strong caramel and rose aroma. Ultra-buttery with strong butterscotch and hazlenut flavor. Fades on palate quickyl, but leaves a nice sweet kiss on the tounge. Alcohol very strongly noted. Hops? Tasted again more recently, with added notes of musky indian spice, like cardamon and coriander. Fresh blasts of pineapple, fresh cherries and some coconut. Finishes with a good round of mellowed hops...

On tap, Winterfest 2005, St. Paul, MN...

Medium yellow, hazy and verging on opaque with some tiny floaters. Head is minimal, but laces in thin coating sheets. Aroma of light cinnamon toast, some mace, buttery thick malts, light esters. Thick mouthfeel, low and lush carbonation. Nice flavor, not bright and bold but rich and textured, light pineapple and a quality of sweet shortbread from beginning to end, like a Lorna Doone cookie with confectioner's sugar. A little one-sided, I suppose -- but to my mind -- very pleasant, like an old favorite candy bar. A nice entry in a style that I'm liking more and more.
