Got this from the bother in law over the weekend in a growler.

A - Pours a hazy deep burnt orange almost red. No head due to the lack of carbonation.

S - Sweet bourbon and malt and not much else. You don't get any of the wood and no hops.

T - Sweet malt followed by bourbon up front. It get a little messy in the back with some dry bitterness and an alcohol burn. The bourbon is lost with the woody dry finish which isn't terribly pleasant. Too bad because the taste up front is very satisfying

M - No carbonation! Shitty because this is a nice full body with great bourbon flavor

D - As odd as the finish is and how much of a punch the alcohol has, this isn't too bad to drink. I'd like to know the ABV though as this has quite a burn.

Overall I'm a bit torn on this beer. The flavor is great up front, very nice bourbon flavor. In the back its an odd combo of dry wood, hop bitterness and alcohol burn. Then the absolute lack of carbonation reminds me of the Brandy Barrel Aged Angel's Share.

Originally reviewed February 4, 2005. Bourbon Barrel Aged. Light on the aroma. Thick ruddy opalescent glow. Super sweet cherry tones. Creamy, very strong, with plentiful hints of bourbon. Rich and spicy in the nose. Complex palate, smacks simply of fruit. This is an amazing beer. A stellar drink! Take it slow, it’s strong.

Originally reviewed on September 22, 2005. On tap at the Big Lake Brewfest. This beer gains SO much with age. I’ve had a various series of these beers in different stages and I have to say that it only gets better with time. The 2005 needed work, but the 2004 and the 2003 were supreme. This 2004 doesn’t hold quite the depth of the 2003, but is still out of this world. Bourbony nose of sweet caramel, rose and yeast. Flavor is a little hot with alcohol, but is quickly alleviated by a swirling texture rich run of grapefruit juice, toffee, fresh french bread, and warm yeast. Lemons and pears, over a run of brandy. The texture is truly astounding in this beer. It’s got a lucious oily coating, that just slicks off the tounge, but kisses sweet. Surprise on the back end a good dose of hops in there, even with age that balances this beer so well. Sometimes I think Hoops is overtly a hop demon, but here it works. Excellent!

Much thanks to hopdog for sharing this growler...
Appears a semi-transparent reddish-brown with a small, light tan cap that quickly fades into a mild collar. Spotty bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of caramel, butterscotch, toffee, cocoa, ripe fruit, bourbon, vanilla, and raisins.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with more of a port-like quality found in the flavors with some complex alcohol notes.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, sugary, but the heat is evident in this one.

On-tap at Gitchee Gumee Brewfest - Mega murked rusty brown with a small firm cap of light tan foam that keeps for a good long while. Lacing sticks in snowflake patterns all over the glass.

Huge bourboun nose wafting with thick caramel and oaky sweetness. Very tingey and high on the heat. If it weren't for the solid backing of caramel, this would be a straight shot of bourbon. Rough and pungent piney hops with hints to raw citrus pith percolate through every now and then.

Taste is all but bourbon here, loads of oaky sweet heat slap your palate around while only subtle trails of thick caramel keep a softer warmth and smoothness. A fevered dark and rough citrus piney hop bite singes within the bourbony heat in the finish. Whoffda, this stuff was bourbony, it could clean out the pipes of a 30 year old sink.

Big. Thick. Heated. Nearly full bodied, pretty darn heavy and rough with a wonderful bourbon fury. The malts are just thick enough and loaded with caramel goodness to help keep it smoother then it ought to be. Super rough citric pined hop and boiling point breaking darkness to its finish. Scrapy, torn, and tattered hop cones brim along the back end while the bourbony sweet heat makes a home in your throat.

Immensely huge on the alcoholic heat. Biggly bigtime sipper!
It's a shot of bourbon with a barleywine chaser.
