Clouded, slightly burnished golden hue, big head that drifts down with assurance.

Aroma, sweetness and spice, with that Belgian yeast kick. Earthy, yet ethereal, and utterly lovely. A bit on the dark side, for the style, but that's fine by me, I'm up for loose interpretations.

Taste: a pleasure on the palate, a delight in the mouth. Some small amount of alcohol burn on the tongue and back of throat, but it remains citrus-y, peppery, yet smooth and tasty. Dark malts play against citrus-y hop character, nice and spicy, with a full-blown character that never quits. Damnably delicious, this. A highly sufficient tipple I could never turn down. Plenty, plenty flavor. Non-stop tastiness. A little wet, then a lot dry, some juicy fruit, then comes the spice.

So glad to finally have it, in 64-ounce growler form. I'm almost killing the whole thing in one fell swoop, but, no, that wouldn't be cool. I'm a little over halfway through it. I'll save the rest for tomorrow. Or will I?….

(I didn't.)

Thanks to sholland119 for sharing a growler of this.

A-Copper with a thin white head that left spotty lace.

S-Very sweet honey malt aroma with even more candi sugar sweetness piling on.

D-Sweet taste up front with a bit of spiciness in the background.

M-Medium body with cloying lingering sweetness.

D-This beer isn't "bad" but it is simply WAY to sweet for me. The most disappointing beer from Fitger's I have ever had. Like I said, decent and it does have some merit but this one was not my cup of tea(beer).

On-tap at the brewpub: A nice surprise to see this on the board out of how many times I've either missed it or just didn't review due to being at a beerfest. Well worth the wait...
Limpid light brownish orange color, quite hazy looking with a very thin capping of white foam mostly sitting at the edges. Small bits of lace graze the 10oz glass within which it was served. And at only $3.00 for the 10oz, was a pretty good price I thought.

Light aroma of berries, pear, and Belgian candied sweetness. Quite fresh and fruity with a bit of caramel to its backing, but altogether a bit too light. Would've been great to have this be much more forward on the nose.

However, taste wise this was quite the spectacle of yummyness. Nicely soft, clean, creamy berryness ensues with a oily ease of lightly sweet sugaryness of fruit juices and malt. Notes of pear, apple, candied orange, and raisin begin to develope but stays favorably well-balanced with a big malty soothing undercarriage of caramely goodness and straight forward malt tone of sweet fruits. I really enjoyed the taste of this one. Has great fruity flavors and an altogether big malt body giving it a soothing creamy, nearly silky ease in texture to go down. Soft fulfilling rich malty finish lets off a sliced smidgeon of heated spice too. Yum.

Feel is pretty malty smooth. Just about medium with a lightness to it at frist but grows expedentially as it goes. Creamy, soothing, soft, subtle, and caring nature of carbonation and overall body. A relaxing comfortable brew to behold. Great flavor profile and malty richness thats well-balanced and not to over eager and boozy. Listed at 8%, this was a fucking gem compared to the Blue Label reserve dubbel.

Had 2 of these without any problem. A very nice brew. Again, to bad that for the most part, Fitger's flat out refuses to growler they're bigger brews such as this. As I begged for one, and only left with a Starfire Pale instead.

Fitgers Brewhouse Hair of the Monk is a Belgian-style Tripel. It pours a bit of white foam over
a spritsy, cloudy honey colored brew. The nose is the familiar fruit and bubble gum esters. The
flavor is lighter malts and fruit intensified by, but not dominated by, a bit of scotch-like alcohol in
the background. The finish is bright , clean, and warming, the mouthfeel is velvety. The alcohol
is well modulated at all times, and you only really feel it as a warming effect.

Originally reviewed April 24, 2005. On tap at the brewpub. Orange-tinted hazy dark golden pour, with no head, except for a white rim. Estery fruit profile wafts, backed with sugary sweet malt notes. Oily orange flavors, backed with a strong ester and hexane profile. Alcohol is absorbed in the front end, making a beautiful, hardly noticable appearance. Carbonation is light. Back end of flavor profiule is extremely sweet, with a good kick of orange, apricot and fresh yeast. Hops are limited to distant notes. Palate is coating, with a sugary honey dry oak aftertaste.

I got this in the middle of May '05, I am not sure if it's too late in the season or what, but it did not appear well. Average deep amber color for a tripel, but no head but a few bubble around the edge with no retention. Good belgiany/fruity smell. The malt had a good fruity taste, but is was a bit on the malty side. Hints of spice and coriander. A little flat mouthfeel and drinkabily, that alcohol was hid well though. Better than a lot of beers because it is a Belgian trippel but average in the style.

This beer came a glowing honey brown with a thin film of head.

Smelled of wheat, honey, spicy yeast and green grapes.

Tastes of sweet caramel and sour wheat malt with a very dry and almost pungent yeasty finish. This tended to aggravate my stomach.

The mouth feel was medium in body with a light carbonation.

Not a bad beer, but in my opinion, it seemed a little thick for a triple, and the flavor was a bit bland. However, it was easily identified as a triple and considering it is from Duluth, its an amazing brew.

Fitgers really does a nice job with their Big Beers....this is another good one...

The nose is excellent...very fruity...pears...apples...even some dark cherries...pours a slightly hazed bronze color...

When I sampled this at the brewery it seemed sweeter than it does now out of the growler...It was almost too sweet at the brewhouse....I definitely taste the alcohol right away now..it really slices into the underlying Belgian malt sweetness...fruity flavors also emerge...definitely some pears...there's some nice complexity here but tough to distinguish with all the alcohol flaming at the flavors..AT FIRST...as I work through this growler the alcohol becomes much less obtrusive...much more drinkable...a real nice sweet belgian malt load...and the alcohol adds a nice spicy texture rather than overwhelming...this all of a sudden became very drinkable...

Overall, the alcohol hits the buds too hard early, and I think it might be a better tastng beer at 8% but it is still well worth drinking. If this was closer to me, I'd kick back 2 or 3 of this a couple times a week while it was out...Not an all-time great but pretty damn good...

Re-tasted 4/30/05-

Fruity nose remains..unimpressive head (never a good thing !)...sweet...fruity apples amd pears....not as much heat this time..spicy finish..good but nothing I couldn't live without.

On tap at Winterfest 2003, St. Paul, MN...

Slightly hazy green/brown bronzy color. Big bubbles and laces very nicely, even in a small glass. Slightly woodsy aroma with traces of apricot and cling peaches. Very nice and sweet (too sweet?) malt profile, sense of peach and pronounced pear fruit. Carbonation and mild hops give a nice full and round finish with a fruity aftertaste. A number of similarities to Ommegang and it laces better.
