India Pale Ale originated when the British Empire was at its height. British soldiers and civil servants were stationed all over the globe (including India), and regular ales could not survive the long journey by sea to reach them. The British solved this terrible dilemma by adding excessive amounts of hops to their beer–using the preservative properties of hops to increase the life of their beers.

Our Dragonfly India Pale Ale is true to this tradition, featuring seven hop additions to create a powerful hop profile. A solid malt base, however, tempers the bitter American hops, giving Dragonfly a balance not often found in this style. The end product is a well-balanced, malty beer with the crisp taste of hops and an exceptionally floral nose.

Big thanks goes out to robwestcott for sending me this one as an extra in a past trade! Bottled October 2010! Served from bottle into a Warsteiner mug. Poured a slightly red-orange with a one finger off-white head that subsided to a half finger slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, bitter hop, dark chocolate, and caramel. The flavor was of sweet malt, caramel, and subtle bitter hop. It had a medium feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was not a bad brew, but not great either. The malt backbone on this one was a little weak for my liking. I would love to have a chance to try this one fresh on-tap, but alas, distribution is not my friend on that one... Worth trying still.

Taster at Columbus taproom. Medium golden, clear, wispy head, streaky lacing. Aroma is sweet, fruity, light. Flavor is also subtle, sweet, gentle bitterness. Really flavorful and easy to drink.

12 oz. can, best by 11/01/22. My third beer from Upland Brewing Company, been a long ass time since I've had their beer, don't remember trying them, but apparently I've had the black IPA version of this.

Poured to a La Fin Du Monde tulip.

A nice golden orange body on the pour with some very tiny flecks of sediment visible in the glass. Two fingers frothy white head leaves some good lacing and exhibits good staying power. Looks pretty nice.
Aroma is fresh and floral. Some notes of oranges, citrus fruit, bready malts, touch of soapiness, notes of caramel, some earthy must.
Perfect amount of bready caramel malts coincide with the pungent piney hop character. Piney, citrusy, with slight bitterness / resin on the finish. Tastes fresh, floral, and is super well balanced. Definitely my kind of IPA.
Feel is smooth, crisp, clean, lightly bready malts & some resinous hops on the finish. Easy-drinking, and almost quenching for the modest abv. (BeerAdvocate lists 6.0% abv but the can says 6.70%).

I found it to be extremely well-balanced and easy to drink stuff, not sure why it has such low ratings here, but I supposed that's what happens when people only want to drink disgustingly acidic "New England Style" IPA's.

This was my first visit to Upland. I am not a “sour guy” but I hear they make great sours. As for the Dragonfly IPA, It is not one I would keep in my fridge. For me, this one ranks low on my list of IPAs. So many great ones out there, Dragonfly is not one of them.
