A: Pours a transparent straw color with a small white cap.

S/T: Honestly I could not detect kiwi in the nose or flavor. Mostly super tart stone fruits and citrus- lemon and lime mainly, along with a touch of funk. At first sip this is pretty damn tart, it will make your face scrunch. The flavor really emerges as this decants, so give it time.

MF/O: Fizzly carbonation and it's dry flavor only intensifies the sourness of this beer- it's like the end of a box of sour patch kids. No kiwi that I could find (kind of disappointing in that way), but overall really good (569 characters)

Bottle shared by Thorpe, thanks Mike. I really enjoyed this lambic but I was hoping it was going to be more fruity...I guess not though.

Beer is yellow and hazy, almost has a greenish tinge to it, wispy head of tiny bubbles, moderate carbonation, no head retention, no lacing. Looks fine.

Beer smells like kiwis slightly, some acetic character, some lactic and succinic burn in there. Mild funk and oak too, smells pretty damn good if you ask me.

Beer is thin and really bright on the forward palate. Not as tart as the others but a nice acetic and succinic punch gives your taste buds a wake up call. Pretty heavily carbonated on the palate gives the carbonic boost to the lactic smoothness, thinning out the sourness and carrying the beer to the finish. I really enjoyed it. Not as good as the persimmon or the raspberry but definitely in the top few I've had. (964 characters)

Reviewing the Kiwi Lambic from Upland Brewing Company out of Bloomington, Indiana.

Batch "02-09", bottled 06/12/13. Served in a Fantome tulip and enjoyed on 03/25/14.

Appearance: Pours a nice orange color that's relatively clean in appearance until you get to the later bottle pours. Minimal lacing or retention. 4/5

Smell: Huge kiwi, plus lacto and vinegar. The nose radiates sourness and kiwis. 4.25/5

Taste: Hugely tart kiwi flavor, plus lacto and vinegar. Not complex, but tasty in small doses. Big acidity and sourness here. Tasty, but the acidity/tartness layers heavily. The dregs of the bottle just might be the most sour thing I have ever drank. 4.25/5

Mouthfeel: Light-medium bodied, nicely carbonation. Very tart, with a little sweetness. Very dry finish. 4.25/5

Overall: This is a really tasty beer, but it is so tart and acidic that it can only be reasonably handled in small doses unless you are inclined to consume an unreasonable amount of Tums with the beer. This is the Chocolate Rain of sours; share it with a group of friends and be forewarned about consuming solo.

Pours a murky honey orange with a foamy beige head that fades to nothing. No lacing on this one. Smell is sour, tart, and funky with some general fruity aromas. Taste is much the same and the kiwi does come out a bit more in the flavor and has a super acidic finish. this beer has a very high level of carbonation with a super crisp and acidic mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a great taste that is super drinkable. (567 characters)

750mL bottle poured into large tulip - bottled 2010

Pours a completely clouded light golden color with a thin coating of white head. Dissolves completely into a minuscule collar, leaving little to no lacing.

Intensely funky and tart in the nose - filled with brett and bacteria with oak. Slightly vinous and fruity with a really soft notion of kiwi and citrus. Hay and horse blanket with grass and plenty of yeasty funk.

The building sourness glides across the palate with touches of white wine, citrus and kiwi. Some of the fruit is definitely lost here, but you can still pick it out during moments in between the mouth-puckering sourness and yeasty funk. Oak with hay and barnyard, touches of straw and grain. Finishes dry, tart and long.

Medium body, well carbonated, dry and mouth-puckering on the palate. The kiwi has lost a step due to age, but this is one of those sours you feel in the back of your gums after the first few sips. I'd like to try a fresher bottle next time to see how the fruit comes through, but this was a really enjoyable one. (1,060 characters)

Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter.

Appearance: Pours a clear golden amber color with a hint of off white head that goes away.

Smell: Light and very sour. Vinegar and a lot of funk. I would say I'm getting a fruity presence, but nothing is screaming kiwi to me.

Taste: Tart and funky. I don't know if I would have been able to tell you this was a fruit lambic if I didn't know what I was drinking. I'm getting lemon and vinegar with a traditional lambic funk. Just a bit acidic. The finish is tart and lemony.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with lots of tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I thought this was a really nice lambic, but I was hoping for more fruit. I'd definitely have more and enjoyed it a lot. (735 characters)

Poured a hazy golden orange with yellow highlights that had a finger of head and left a little bit of lacing sticking to the sides of the glass. The aroma was quite nice and gave characteristics that it would be nice and sour with acidic citrus notes popping out along with slight brett, oak, and green apple but really was trying to find the kiwi within the nose after every whiff. The taste was quite similar to the nose consisting of acidic citrus, green apples and oaky bretty accents. Sip after sip and no real big kiwi character on the palate but it did have faint pineapple notes. The brew was medium body with a good amount of prickly carbonation which had a sweet, sour, acidic, and dry finish. It drank really good but I wish it had big kiwi flavor alonside a sour punch; oooone daaaay. (796 characters)

A- Pours a deep golden in color with a fairly hazy body. A very small amount of head forms but is gone almost as fast as it appears. There is no lacing to be had. Really good looking in the glass aside from the lack of a head.

S- The scent of this one starts off with a huge sour attack on the nostrils. Just maybe the slightest hint of kiwi mixes in with the sour smell. The tartness is almost entirely lambic-like in quality with just a touch of dry barrel scents.

T- This beer starts off just like its scent; with a giant sour attack upon the senses. A small amount of kiwi is barely detectable right up front and is very sour, but the following lambic tartness is even more sour. Towards the middle-end of the drink the barrel kicks in with some dryness that increases the intensity of the tartness. Lingering kiwi flavor at the end that is accompanied by, of course, intense lambic tartness.

M- This beer is rather sticky across the palate. The overall feel is heavier than one might expect for the style, and that is intensified up by the level of acidic tartness. The tartness also slows the drink considerably.

Overall, this may be the most sour beer I've ever had, and I think that is the combo of a sour fruit with the lambic base. It does display some kiwi flavor, but no copious amounts. This is really a beer for those that like to pucker. (1,356 characters)

2010 release, batch #2 of Kiwi.

It pours a murky orange into a tulip glass. Solid sheet of foam, no lacing, with a pastel orange body. Despite attempts to keep the yeast settled, it clearly got mixed in over the course of several pours.

Signature Brett funk, tropical fruit, orange juice, bright and juicy. Hard to identify a clear kiwi aroma, but it's certainly fruity with a nice funky component from the Brett yeast.

Tart and clean lacto sourness, very juicy with drying oak and lingering funky Brett traces in the aftertaste. It drinks like fresh squeezed OJ almost, puckering, borderline sour. Bright and tart, clean and dry. Rapidly dries up on the palate like champagne.

It's a refreshing incarnation of lambic, more of a success than the last batch, and definitely something i'd drink again. (806 characters)

Just when you though you've seen it all- this, Kiwi Lambic! From a semi-rural brewery that has garnerred its reputation from the production of ordinary American-style ales, out springs a rustic and spot-on Belgian-style Lambic with the back sweetening of, all things, kiwi. How does this delicate fruit hold up to the sharply sour flavor of Lambic...?

With a pour that's typical of Belgian sours, the murky yellow-ish gold color seems to display the same tone and tenner as bruised pears. A dainty and delicate airy white head develops on the beer confidently, but quickly succumbs to the acidity of the beer quickly, and with little lace. Kiwi's low lying carbonation seems caught somewhere less zesty than Gueuze but not as still as traditional Lambic either.

Tart fruit, cider, and white wine aromas fill the nose with nearly the acidic tones expected from vinegars. Limes, mellons, under rippened berries, and crabapples give a glimpse into the slightly funky and estery mix. But the underlying wood notes of sandalwood, dry oak, and lighlty mossy scent carries an undeniable earthy tone to support the sharp fruit and acid.

Flavors begin to balance toward the fruity and sour notes that rise as limes early on but grow into the more finesse melon, kiwi, and papaya flavors late as the wheaty finish and aftertaste reveal a softer and more palatable element without impeeding drinkability. Slightly bitter, salty, and brine-like, the mid palate delivers a flavor that's interestingly similar to salt water taffy.

Perhaps closer to medium bodied than light bodied, especially when considering style parameters; but the beer retains a slightly richer malt body that provides a welcome buffer to the sharp acidity that pangs at the jaws. This creamier effect tampers the onslaught of acid until the palate acclimates and finishes with a moderately astringent feel and malty-dry finish and minimal alcohol warmth.

There's an overall clean, nearly all lactic sourness that commands the beer and shows restraint with the complexities of heavy must, horse hair, or mushroom earthiness- this all allows the actual kiwi to shine through the more aggressive sour flavors. Though the fruit flavor seems melon-like, I can also see the influence of kiwi playing a pronounced role in the flavor spread. Well done Upland, well done! (2,327 characters)

A: A light hazy pear color, with very little white head.

S: Strong vinegar and very acidic. So much that is makes your face flush a little when you take a deep smell. This one is going to be pucker..

T: WOW! That is a lot of sour! Tart and acidic, burningly so.. There are some earthy notes beneath the sour. The finish is Kiwi-tastic!

M: Light and bone dry. Effervescent carbonation.

O: A very interesting brew. Blisteringly sour. Intense, strong, and complex. Although small amounts would probably be best. A great beer to share with friends. (599 characters)

Bottled 12/6/10.

Pours a semi cloudy dark yellow color with an inch or so of tight bubbley white foamy head leaving minimal lacing as it recedes.

Aromas begin quite light and fruity with some definite tropical notes to it. Some sweet citrus notes and lactic acidity along with green apple, too. A light bretty funk and oak component. I wouldn't have known it was a kiwi lambic smelling this blind but some of the fruitiness may have faded over the last year and a half in the bottle.

The tastes begin quite dry, with decent amounts of white vinous oakiness. The kiwi is again absent, but there is a nice tropical fruit (mango, pineapple) component as well as some lemon/lime citrus.

The mouthfeel is medium to light bodied with a lively amount of carbonation. Finish has a medium amount of lactic twang and a hint of acetic acid.

Overall this is my second favorite of the 5 or so Upland fruited lambics I have tried to date. Still not as awesome as the Persimmon, but heads and tails above the various berry offerings I have sampled. Not sure how this may have changed over time in the bottle but I hope I can sample a fresher bottle down the road. (1,154 characters)

Bottled: 2/5/10, Batch: 77-08 - corked and caged.

Vanessa (the bartender) served this chilled bottle with newtony, my buddy Dave and I at Upland brewing. I reserved this bottle in advance and asked her to pour/present it for us on the spot (no, it's not ordinarily available to buy/drink on the premises, sorry).

It poured into our small wine glasses a cloudy, flat yellow with a great deal of carbonation. Good retention leaving no lacing on the glass.

Moderate funk on the nose with some white bread yeast and a tinge of fresh, souring kiwi, green apple sharpness and oak. Very nice!

The flavor dictated the nose, however the kiwi quality wasn't appearant in the taste for me - only mildly mixed in with the nose. The funk and sour presence was very nice though. Very sharp, crisp and refreshing due to the addtions of champagne yeasts.

Light to medium bodied, semi-dry and crisp. Very easy to put back.

From notes, 2010 release.

Pours a hazy-yellowish color with a half to full finger of white head. Smell is brett, some more funk, and a very little amount of kiwi. You can smell some fruit and slight citrus, but not really kiwi. Flavor is tart with some citrus. Kiwi is extremely hidden. I wonder if the kiwi's they used weren't ripe enough, that would explain a lot. It is a good beer, but I was hoping for a "kiwi bomb" I guess, as I love kiwi's, but I'm pretty sure I did see some kiwi seeds, bonus. Quite a bit of carb on this one, felt really good and it felt really crisp and lively. Drinkability is really good, I wish I had another bottle to share with friends, but there's always next release! (702 characters)

Received this brew from TheodorHerzl from the recent release. I'm really pumped to try this kiwi one as obviously it escaped my grasp the first time around. Drank from my The Lost Abbey goblet. We got a gusher here...

Appearance- Pours a hazy yeast filled yellow with a fairly nice half finger white head that has some nice staying power. A nice collar remains along with a spotty cap and a bit of random lacing.
Smell- Nice and fresh smelling with a definite bit of fruitiness, but nothing that says kiwi. A bit of fruity tartness with a fair amount of an acidic vinegar character. Not sure the Brett has done much yet as the acidic sharpness dominates and I get little to no funk. The wood is always particularly strong in these Upland brews and this is no different.
Taste- Starts with a nice bit of fruitiness that like the nose isn't necessarily kiwi. Honestly I have nothing that I can really compare it to, flavor wise. The tartness isn't that bad as it's fairly fruity and the vinegar aspect is subdued. A teeny tiny bit of bitterness sneaks in from someplace unknown. The oak is strong and has a large vanilla aspect. Maybe ever so slightly tannic on the finish.
Mouthfeel- Medium body with a nice aggressive bite of carbonation and a bit of chunk from the kiwi floating around.
Drinkability- Really tasty brew that pretty much fits the mold for the Upland Lambic family. Really fruity, really woody and ultra drinkable. The carbonation was much better in this one than the previous years but it was a bit much this time around. Split the difference and we have a winner. Thank much Matt!! (1,629 characters)

Clear goldenrod and dark yellow with a thin near-white cap. Spots of stick down the glass.

Lots of earthy funk in the aroma pressed up against bright, lactic sour character. There's definitely a white and green fruit presence as well, though it'd be tough to say "kiwi" without the obvious prompting. Regardless, this smells wonderful.

And the taste is just as good as the aroma. Lots of bright lactic sour character, earthy funk, and white and green fruit flavors. Exceptionally drinkable. Crisp, refreshing, and very sour.

Medium bodied with high carbonation.

consumed with aasher. I believe the third upland lambic we've had in our tastings. Poured into new belgium snifter. No real foam head with a typical belgian ale apricot color.

Very hard to make comments about the smell. I mean who knows what a kiwi smells like? Tart up front with a little bit of sweetness. All things said, smell is positive.

Super tart, lots of lemon with a backbone that almost presents some pineapple believe it or not.

Upland lambics are very hard for me to separate from wilds and sours, but they have a quality that the latter lack, because you can at least detect a slight taste of the given fruit. This beer was tart from start to finish with a distinct sweet note.

Loved this beer. Im partial to anything that makes me pucker without leaving a bad taste in my mouth. (797 characters)

Pours a cloudy orange with a medium amount of head fading pretty well.

Kiwi is somewhat subdued with lots of barnyard yeasty funk.

Holy sour Batman. As with all other Upland lambics, this one is very sour. Intense sourness hits off the bat with some kiwi flavor, but sour and barnyard funk dominate.

Mouthfeel is somewhat creamy with high carb levels.

One of the better sour offerings from Upland. Caleb's got this program dialed in. (437 characters)

Had at a recent tasting...thanks once again for busting this out Luke! Review from notes. Poured from a corked and caged 750ml bottle.

A- Pours a hazy yellow-orange color. The yeast just doesn't settle down in the glass and I don't mind it. One finger white head that shows good retention. No lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Stronger Brett funk right off the bat. Kiwi doesn't standout very much and to be honest you need to bury your nose in there to even find it. Green apples and light almost citrusy aroma in there. Oak comes through but the Brett is a nice undertone through everything. Light bready notes buried in the back of everything else.

T- Flavor profile is pretty much like the aroma but I found the Kiwi more in the aftertaste than when I drinking the beer. This one was puckering more than anything else. Interesting as I thought more citrus notes shined more than the Kiwi. Woody oak flavors came through in more of a undertone through the middle to last half of the beer. Brett funk shined with this beer from start to finish.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is big with this beer and I think it fits it perfect. Brett funk from start to finish with this beer. Very well blended lambic with a light drying from the alcohol. Flavor profile is great and some individual flavors shine overall.

D- This beer is fantastic. This years was better than when I have had it before. I am glad I really got to try this one out and wish I had a bottle for the cellar. Do yourself a favor and seek this one out. It just shows you that even a good lambic can be brewed in the midwest. Upland..your beers may be a little balnd at times but your lambic shine through and through. (1,696 characters)

Batch 2, split with friends.

A - Pours a golden color, fizzy white carbonation, thin cap, some lacing along the sides of the glass.

S - More funk then i expected from reading the reviews. There's def some kiwi notes in there. Good sour/funk, some oak, kiwi.

T - Very solid here and straight forward. Funk/sour, kiwi, oak. I'm pleasantly surprised how good this is. I'm going to pour a second glass...no, I'm not sharing.

M - Light, fizzy carbonation, dry finish.

D - Yum! Very tasty. I only had one bottle so hopefully someone else will share in the future and I'll get to try it again. Recommend.

Edit: Just had a batch 1 and batch 2 blow it out of the water. (671 characters)

Huge thanks to Sean for this guy. Poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy golden straw colow with a bit of an orange hue to it. No head here, just a little bit of white bubbles.

Tart fruit in the aroma. Oranges and tropical fruit comes to mind. Nice and tart with a little bit of must funk in the background. Holy sour beer! This one is sour start to finish; nice and clean all through out the pallet. Sour tropical fruit like pineapples and mago here.

The body is nice and light with moderate carbonation. Again, very clean on the finish. Overall this is pretty impressive. Nice and sour with good fruit flavors. Best of the Uplands I've had so far. (648 characters)

Pours a moderate golden color with a wee bit of haze. There is a slight white head that has some lasting power. The nose brings some tart, light kiwi notes. It's not overpowering, but it is definitely there. I really like what it does to the beer when combined with a bit of funk, oak, and sourness. Kiwi is certainly a fruit that more brewers should be using with regard to lambics. Maybe the flavor fades really quickly and that's why. Either way, this beer combines the fruit with the sourness and mild funky plus oak quite well. Nice feel and drinks incredibly well. (644 characters)

My sister finally won an Upland lottery, woot. Old review from notes: 8 oz. into a white wine glass on February 1st, 2014.

A - Very hazy golden, crisp bubbles line the top edge, no real lacing or retention.

S - Lime peel, hay, soft mandarin, oak shavings, and yes - some definite kiwi peel.

T - The fruit component has a wonderfully oily quality about it, as though the kiwi has some real density to it. Lemon, white wine vinegar, super tart Granny Smith apple, honey, and slight candied walnuts.

M - High carbonation, light-medium body, a touch tannic, extremely dry finish.

D - Finally I get to try some of the best Upland has to offer. This is worth the hassle and should be opened very fresh. It's already more bitingly-tart than if expected and I wouldn't want to lose any more balance from the kiwi. (810 characters)

A- hazy but brilliant golden orange, about an inch of eggshell head that fades quickly to a collar. unbelievably loud carbonation! beads are shooting up the glass like mad.

S- tons of funk and must, nectar sweetness, tropical fruits

T- wonderfully complex, from omg sour to sweet. kiwi seeds and lemon rind. lactic bliss. so sour and acidic, wonderful contrast to the aftertaste which is strong in sweet citrus and kiwi rind.

M- perfect for the style, not too thin, highly refreshing yet robust. perfect amount of carbonation, was worried there would be too much based on the pour.

O- fantastic fruited lambic from upland. absolutely seek this one out if you are a fan of the style. not as kiwi forward as I had imagined, but the complexity and pucker factor make this one a cant-miss. (792 characters)

Appearance: golden yellow beer with what looks like kiwi pulp collecting in the bottom of the glass. Small white head that falls quickly.

Smell: Some funk and mild kiwi.

Taste: This beer has serious pucker! It not overwhelming, but its in your face. I would say moderately high pucker factor. You do get a little bit of the kiwi and the beer almost has a salty quality to it. Decent amount of funk keeps the sour notes in balance. Tasty sour.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied beer with high carbonation. A very drinkable sour that is refreshing and is clean.

Overall: This is in my top 2 of the Upland Lambics that I have tried so far. Blackberry is the other Upland that I really enjoyed. (744 characters)
