This one holds a special place in my heart in that it is from Bloomington, IN the home of my alma mater, Indiana University.

It along with Sierra Nevada and my hometown Goose Island, really introduced me to craft beer in my late teens and early twenties.

I think at the time when this brewery opened in 1998, this beer was a nice choice for one opening in a college market. Nothing too flashy and easy drinking.

Fast forward to 2014. Has it has held up over time? I say yes. For a Wheat Beer it is very approachable and I could see myself still picking this out when the mood strikes.

Upland has since moved into more adventurous brewing styles (They are know for their sours now) but this flagship is still a good solid beer.

Go Big Red and pick up an Upland Wheat Ale!

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled in 07/2013. Pours very hazy golden straw color with a 2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of big lemon, pear, apple, orange peel, coriander, clove, pepper, wheat, biscuit, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt, yeast, and spice notes; with good strength. Taste of lemon, orange peel, pear, apple, coriander, clove, wheat, biscuit, grass, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of lemon, pear, apple, orange peel, coriander, clove, biscuit, wheat, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and robustness of malt, spice, and yeast ester flavors; with a good malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and smooth mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.5%. Overall this is a damn good witbier. All around good robustness and balance of malt, spice, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Glass: Standard US pint glass

Upland's Wheat Ale is a fairly straightforward, simple Belgian-style wheat beer in the tradition of Blue Moon: excessive sweetness, overdone spices and no significant yeast character. This was disappointing, as the aroma was somewhat pleasing, leading to a fairly unpleasant drink overall. One I'd pass on.

Pours a 1cm tall head of white colored foam, made up of small, medium, and large-sized bubbles, creating a spongy appearance. Retention is below average, the foam lasting under one minute in descent to a modest ring around the perimeter of the glass and a small island of residual lace resting atop the body. Lacing on the sides of the glass is poor, with little more than a few dots clinging to the walls. Body is a medium-dark golden yellow in color, with light bringing out pale golden yellow hues. Carbonation visible through the hazy body, moderate in number and activity.

Aroma of sweetness clearly from wheat malt with additions of coriander and orange zest that give a smooth herbal sweetness with a bit of citric tang from the orange. There's also a very faint hint of yeast in the background if one inhales deeply enough. Not particularly complex or deep, but enjoyable.

Unlike the aroma, the flavor is fairly dull and watery, a mix of overdone coriander and dried orange zest atop a fairly flat wheat malt sweetness, with little depth or complexity aside from hints of clove. Front of palate features a somewhat cloying sweetness that comes across as similar to what coriander-orange-flavored 7-up would be like: syrup-like malt sweetness with too much orange zest and coriander. Mid-palate experiences a better blend of bread-like wheat malt flavors and sweetness mixed with still strong, but more balanced orange and coriander, with hints of clove-like phenols that were most likely produced by the yeast. Back of palate tastes too strong of spices, with coriander being overdone; this is joined to clove-like phenolic characters from the yeast, orange, and rather subdued wheat malt influences. Aftertaste of lightly grainy wheat flavors combined with slightly tart orange peel, residual coriander, spicy phenolics, and a mild overall sweetness.

Beer is light to medium-light in body, with carbonation of medium intensity, resulting in a foamy (9/10) and smooth (1/10) mouthfeel that's quite pillowy with foam, but a bit watery around the edges. Closes dry, with light stickiness clinging to the palate and lips.

Pours a hazy, bright golden color. Medium, 2 finger head retains ok and laces just a bit. The scent of this beer is classic witbier, with light wheat, some clove, and just a touch of peppery spiciness. Taste follows the scent very closely. Just a hint of banana fruitiness is in the taste of this beer to go along with the clove and spiciness. Light and highly carbonated across the tongue. Very easy to drink.

Overall, a pretty good American interpretation of an Old World classic style. Not as spicy or fruity as some of the European versions, but that's a plus in my book.
