On tap at Carmel Upland tap room.

A: Clear medium gold with about a finger of solid white head. Very good.

S: Candy like esters, bubble gum, coriander, light spices.

T: The esters and gum come out at first, particularly as the beer warms a tad. The alcohol is there, but muted for this high ABV. Tripels are great for that almost candy like flavor and this hits it perfectly without introducing unnecessary oddities.

M: Medium bodied and very fresh from the tap. Excellent.

One of my favorite Tripels.

A – dark yellow. Like a farmhouse or a saisson. No head at all.

S – fruity, a lot like blue moon (no offense). The alcohol is noticeable.

T – Immediately sweet, tastes like Mead. I’d swear there’s oranges in here. I almost thought too sweet, but it’s growing on me. It is softly layered, with the slightest hint of bitter at the end. You have to really taste for any bit of Hops. It’s nicely strong in flavor, a lot of tripel’s seem watered down, not this one. This one is almost syrupy…

M – thicker than most beers. Plenty of sweet aftertaste … and if you really look for it, a bit of hops.

O – I couldn't drink a six pack of this. It’s thick, and too sweet for my preference. That said, it’s got a nice layer of heavy mead opening, and a softer slight tinge of hops after. As for it being supposedly “Belgian Style”; I can’t find it. None of the classic Phenolic yeast taste that you’d get in a normal Trappist or another high end Tripel. While this beer is a good sweet sipping beer, I was disappointed not to taste any of the acidic layers that I seek out Belgian beer specifically for.

Disappointing pour. Very clear nectarine shade of faded orange. A finger of white head that doesn't retain well. A swirl leaves a spotty lace.

Smell is pleasant enough with orange or orange rind, alcohol and possibly banana, strangely enough. If they used Belgian yeast, I'm not picking it up.

After the first two scores, the taste is a surprising success. Orange or orange and pineapple, some citrus fruit that's got a sweetness to it. Plenty of malt. Enough alcohol. Pepper and grape yeasty taste.

The sweetness really helps the score here. It's a bit malty, but the addition of whatever's giving it that sweet citrus taste works wonders. Still, a bit light bodied given the strength, but it still works. Very fruity, carbonated finish.

Overall, this beer ends up being really good. There's enough complexity in the taste and feel to make up for the slightly light feel. Despite it's hefty ABV, it's pretty easy to drink with smoothness.
