22oz bottle from Delocks Discount Liquors (Munster, IN). 7.99. Bottled 12/12. Served in a Burnt Hickory snifter.

Pours hazy deep orange with a half finger of murky manilla head. Head fades to a halo in the glass and leaves large clumps of lace.

Smells of faded citrus, floral and stale bread.

Strange pithy bitter flavors. Orange seeds and peel, lemon/ grapefruit zest, floral notes and stale biscuit. Very little alcohol presence.

Moderately oily medium body with average carbonation. Bitter citrus peel finish that lasts a bit too long given how unappealing it is.

Perhaps it was just too old but this was mediocre at best. Not a drain pour but I'll probably never buy it again.

Appearance - burnt orange color with very little head

Smell - lots of malts and citrus

Taste - front end is very floral, goes into a sweet malty flavor and ends quite bitter

Mouthfeel - not a fan of the bitter at the end

Overall - nothing special but it is nice DIPA

A- This beer pours a slightly red hued deep caramel body that is clear with a thick bubbly sticky beige head. The head last a good bit and is supported by a slow matrix of microbubbles.

S- The fresh sweet caramel malt has some toffee and treacle notes to it with a soft green hop finish.

T- The nice sweet caramel malt is followed by a soft green finish with a green cinnamon spice note and some pungent bitterness that softly grows. There is some nice grapefruit pith notes to the hops as the beer opens.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a nice gentle fizz and no real alcohol heat until the beer warms a good bit.

O- This has a lot of great American Barleywine characters to it with a nice sweet malt backbone with some good depth and a soft hop flavor that grows as the beer opens. Very nice to take the edge of a cold winter night.

Got this one in my poker winnings from SuperNova777. Thanks a lot bud!

Poured a rich copper color with an inch of slightly off white head and very good lacing.

Smell is fantastic. Very hoppy throughout. This beer smells great!!!

Taste is very very good. Great bitter hop flavor throughout.

Medium mouthfeel on this easy drinking beer. Went down smooth and easy.

I enjoyed this one a lot. Luckily I just noticed it in one of my local stores. I'll definitely get this one again.

Sampled on tap at the Upland pub in Bloomington, IN on a bright, sunny Spring afternoon.

Rich amber in color, poured into an Upland goblet. Lace present but minimal.

Lovely floral citrus aroma.

Taste is strong, and heavy on the bitter side but enjoyable. Notes of pine and citrus are most prominent. Very enjoyable, and although this is a heavy beer, I find it tastier than the regular Dragonfly IPA. Solid.

All but nails the look it's supposed to have. Light burnt orange pour, slight haze, and all kinds of things floating in it. The head is just over a finger thick of bright white bubbles of all different sizes. It's cloudy, foamy and craterous, like an IPA should look. Eventually the head implodes in the middle, working its way out, pulling in the perimeter, leaving a thick lace.

The scent is pretty fantastic. A mix of pine, grapefruit and pineapple fill the nose. Just so it's not too hoppy, scents of pale and caramel rise up for balance.

Citrus dominates early on with those lovely grapefruit and pineapple flavors making a showing early on. Eventually the pine arrives at midsip, but there's something else in there that's a bit unusual and I can't quite put my finger on it. I can't tell if it's banana or strawberry, but there's something in there.

It's fairly easy to drink for an imperial. You can put a check by bitterness because it's got plenty, but it's not a palate destroyer. There's a hidden sweetness throughout and the IPA oily feeling is prevalent as the beer leaves your mouth and enters the throat. ABV is well masked and I'd only consider this medium bodied.

Overall, Upland has done a nice job with this. While I enjoyed the regular Dragonfly beer, I really prefer this with it's stronger notes of everything. It's still a manageable beer and won't hurt you too bad.

On tap @ the Upland Tap Room (Bloomington, IN) on 6/4/10. Served in a snifter.

Pours deep clear coppery amber, topped with a finger of bright eggshell-white head. This retains with 1/2 finger of robust froth which leaves a rich cascade of creamy lacing down the sides of the glass. The aroma has a rich hop bouquet going on with it, full of floral character, pine, and spice. This is well balanced in the nose by some fruity citrus, grainy malts, and a touch of toffee. Most of the sweetness here appears to be coming from the fruit flavors though.

The hops are well balanced up front by a thick malt backbone of toasted grains and bready caramel sweetness, while a good bit of fruity tropical sweetness is pushing through as well. The finish is all hops though, with plenty of resins, spice, and citrus rind all giving this a deep lingering bitter finish. The mouthfeel has a bigger full bodied feel to it, with a carbonation that is sharp when it first hits the tongue but then spreads out and fill the mouth up with a dense creaminess. There's definitely some firepower going on with this in the body but the alcohol is mostly kept in check here.

Quality take on a DIPA here that blurred the lines with maybe an American Barleywine or even an Imperial Red a bit a times (something that I didn't mind one bit). Tons of full hop flavor here but the beefiness of the body held the drinkibility down for me just a bit. Overall though, this was solid.

Poured from 22oz bottle.

A- Poured a clear amber/orange color. One and a half finger white head that shows medium retention. Spotty lacing left on the glass when I was drinking.

S- More sweet caramel malts in the front. Toffee malts come next to me. A light citrus hopping in the back of the beer which seems backwards to me since this is a DIPA.

T- This starts off with the same caramel malts as in the aroma. Light toffee notes to this one as well. Citrus hops in the background with a light tropical hop in the far back. Alcohol is apparent also...very much so.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation was good for the beer. Caramel malts left on the palate with a tropical hopping in the aftertaste. Flavors were muddled and not very blended. Kind of jerk and go on the flavor. Alcohol very drying on the palate.

D- This was kind of a mess. I didn't really enjoy this as a DIPA. In fact I wouldn't even say this is really a DIPA at all. It's alright for a IPA just maybe but I wouldn't buy it again.

22 ounce bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a hazy orange/copper color with about a half inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both decent. Aroma is citrusy (tropical fruit, grapefruit) and pine hops, along with some caramel malt. Taste is similar to the aroma, but the bitter flavors are much stronger compared to the others. It's an herbal/floral bitterness that I notice in the taste, and I think it overpowers the other flavors. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and is well carbonated. I think it's an OK brew, but not one I would buy very often. There are just too many other Imperial IPA's that I would rather have instead.
