I'm not huge on Upland, but I have been dying to try this. Picked up a bottle today bottled in 09, so it has almost 2 years of age on it allready. Pours black, small head, typical for a RIS. The nose was my favorite part. Awesome chocolate smell, plus malt and it smells of alcohol. Taste was a little bit on the boozy side. I loved the chocolate, but I was expecting more actually based on the nose. Not much else to it, maybe the slightest bit of coffee, and roasts, but it's just too boozy. Even at almost 2 years old it's boozy, so I bet it's extremely hot fresh. That being said, it is still smooth despite the boozy flavor. Slighty thin mouthfeel, a bit creamy. Overall this was a good, but not great, stout. There's just not much to it. Typical for upland though, there's just not much to anything that i've tried of theirs. This is probably my favorite brew so far from them though. It will make a nice extra for trading.

Received in a trade from former BA BMBCLT. Obscure code but translating the Julian part as canned on 10-31-22; consumed 8-20-23.
Beer poured proper black with a very nice tan head that has some good hang time.
Nose is heavy roasted malts and floral hops.
Taste is spot on the style! Big roasted malt base that has a kiss of cocao. Finishes with a boatload of what i am guessing is Fuggles hopping that balances the beast of a malt base and then some.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth.
Overall i am finding this brew to be very underrated. Actually agreeing with the Untappd raters for a change!

Half pour at Columbus Pump House. Brown pour, dark, brooding, small cap of beige head. Dark, roasty malts, chocolate. Taste is more of the dark chocolate flavors, bitter, roasty. Silky and smooth with minor sweetness.

Ink black appearance in the glass; opaque; thick, frothy light tan head; thick patches and spidery fingers of foam stick to the glass. Nice aroma of dark roast grains and sweet chocolate; cacao. Big bitter chocolate flavor; nice boozy undercurrent; blackstrap molasses. Heavy body; light roughness on the palate; thick residual sugar feel; mild alcohol warmth.
A very nice, straightforward Russian imperial stout aged on cacao, malty and boozy.

Looks decent. Not much head. Thin ring of foam around the edge with some good lace.
Coffee and chocolate notes in the taste and smell.
Feel is somewhat harsh and seltzer like. I don't care that much for this category.
Overall, My plan is to seek out other RISs. But I will go ahead and finish this one off.

The choice of barrel does not taste very good on this one, and there is an almost metallic flavor. On the plus side it is malty and nutty with a bit of dark fruit.

Pours black with two fingers of tan foam. Aroma is earthy chocolate, with toasty, nutty, and caramel malts behind. It has a semi-musty smell, as opposed to a roasty stout. Flavor profile drives heavy earthy malts with moderate nutty, toasty, and toasty malts. Some chocolate adds some slight sweetness, which is curtailed well by grassy hops and caramel at close. As a whole, it leans slightly dry. Mouth feel is medium in thickness with a very mild effervescence. Overall, an earthy stout with some good chocolate intermixed throughout.

Sept 17 bottling.
Tan head. Black color.
Has a bit of a velvety but roasted feel. Cocoa and Hershey’s syrup. Molasses and caramel. Chocolate. Dark dried fruits. Nice body. Smooth. Relatively easy drinking. Pretty solid. Definitely surprised me.

Look: It pours black with a dark brown head. Head retention is very good.
Smell: The first aroma that comes through is intense chocolate. There is also a good deal of roast, a touch of sweetness, and a bit of toffee.
Taste: The roast and bitterness, light, are the first things in the flavor. There are also dark chocolate flavors with very low dark fruits.
Feel: It has a medium full body and is quite smooth on the palate. The alcohol warming is quite pleasant for a beer of this alcohol level.
Overall, a good dead of traditional roast flavor with a pleasant bitter and sweet finish.
