22oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Thanks for sharing Chris!

(A)- Pours pitch black in color. Minimal tan froth.

(S)- A good roasted malt profile with cocoa. Ever so slight chalkiness to it in a dry sense.

(T)- Again, a nice roasted character throughout with a subtle chalky hoppiness met with some good cocoa bits.

(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. A big roasty chalk character that lends some dryness and bitterness to the cocoa sweetness.

(O)- It is a solid stout for sure. The chalkiness is a bit odd for my tastes, but it does help in some areas.

I'm not huge on Upland, but I have been dying to try this. Picked up a bottle today bottled in 09, so it has almost 2 years of age on it allready. Pours black, small head, typical for a RIS. The nose was my favorite part. Awesome chocolate smell, plus malt and it smells of alcohol. Taste was a little bit on the boozy side. I loved the chocolate, but I was expecting more actually based on the nose. Not much else to it, maybe the slightest bit of coffee, and roasts, but it's just too boozy. Even at almost 2 years old it's boozy, so I bet it's extremely hot fresh. That being said, it is still smooth despite the boozy flavor. Slighty thin mouthfeel, a bit creamy. Overall this was a good, but not great, stout. There's just not much to it. Typical for upland though, there's just not much to anything that i've tried of theirs. This is probably my favorite brew so far from them though. It will make a nice extra for trading.

Pours a deep black with tan carbonation. Lace is thin and wispy.

Aroma is charry, roasty, and with lots of dark fruit and bittersweet cocoa. Very nice.

Taste is heavy — bittersweet chocolate dominates, with dark fruit and deeply charred malts underneath it all. Very deep, tasty, and thick. This 10% Russian Imperial Stout is a excellent and exemplary brew for the style, and with the added twist of cocoa nibs.

Wonderful.

Thanks to Tom (TPatuto) for this one. Poured from a 22oz. bomber into a Southampton oversize snifter.

A: Standard pour yields a .5 finger light mocha head with poor retention. Beer is a dark, almost opaque brown. Lacing is spotty with moderate cling. Beer is a bit on the thin side and too lightly colored for its style. Poor legs too.

S: Nose is an odd combination of cocoa nibs, non-sour spoiled milk, tangerine slices, liquorice, coffee, and some slight hints of milk chocolate. Aromatic, but not pleasant. Rather awkward actually.

T: Opens cocoa nibs, liquorice, heavy cream, and lactose. Sour whole milk towards the middle with a heavy dose of roasted malt bitterness. Some chocolate is present to sweeten the experience but spoiled dark fruit and coffee beans enters towards the end to crush my taste buds. Finish is a terrible combination of roasted malt, chocolate, spoiled milk, and over-ripe dark fruit. Aftertaste is more of the same but with a coffee bean graininess added. Its all I can do to take 2 or 3 sips to review this one.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Slightly grainy and bubbly in the mouth. Filmy and oily going down with a messy finish and a long, lingering aftertaste. This just serves to prolong and intensify the horrible flavored of this beer.

D: This beer is terrible in almost every respect. Skip it. Please. I drank it and reviewed it so you don't have to. No amount of aging or barrel-aging could possibly save it in my mind. Upland makes some good beers but this is a complete failure. Furthermore, the name makes me think this is just some mean prank by the brewery. Sounds cute to lure you in, then punches you in the mouth with disgustingness.

A - Pours opaque dark brown, almost black with thick, rich, tan head.

S- hints of coffee, dark chocolate, just a tiny bit of lacquer thinner. Not offensive in any way, just can't think of another way to word it.

T - Rich coffee flavor, hints of lightly charred fig. A bit of toasted marshmallow in there. Heavy on the dark chocolate, similar to a 70% cacao chocolate bar. Alcohol is very present, almost numbing the tongue.

M - Very peppery with creamy finish. Nicely breaks up the tongue coating body.

O - I prefer my RIS's to have at least a touch of sweetness, somthing this beer lacks. Very tasty, but not exactly what I was looking for.

Appearance doesn't get any better. Pitch black, no brown notes, no reddish hues, simply a black hole. On top, the head is light brown and a couple fingers thick, with different sized bubbles. Decent retention.

Scents include malt, alcohol, chocolate and something 'creamy' I can't quite put my finger on.

The cocoa really comes thru in the taste. Bittersweet chocolate lasts well into the finish where you pick up some alcohol notes and some earthy hops.

There's a good battle between bitter and sweet from the cocoa nibs. In addition to the chocolate, it's well-hopped giving a nice bitter punch in the finish. Very creamy, and alcohol is muted, but present til the finish, where it dominates.

This is a pretty good beer. A bit bitter for the type, but the chocolate is nice and makes for a good winter warmer.

Big thanks goes out to beermeX2 for sharing this one at a recent tasting! Poured a massively dark reddish brown with a one finger khaki colored head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark fruit, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, dark fruit, dark chocolate, alcohol, and roasted malt. It had a medium feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a fairly good brew. Pretty much every aspect of this one was very solid, but the mouthfeel left a little to be desired. It just felt a little thin, but had a nice carbonation level going on. Definitely worth trying if you are a fan of the style as all of the proper flavors and aromas are there, but you just have to forgive it for the thinner mouthfeel.
