A: Appears black in the glass, but there is light getting through around the edges, showing this beer to be a dark brown in color. Forms a modest, creamy dark tan head. Little retention as it falls to just a faint surface coating fairly quickly. Some very light lacing.

S: Aroma is primarily roasted malts and sweet, dark fruits with lesser notes of cola and coffee.

T: Taste is a little thin for the style. Starts with a touch of chocolate and a very light sweetness. Dark malts with some notes of char. Burnt bitterness. Cola. Piney hops in the background. Finishes with some not-very-sweet dark fruit, more char, and alcoholic heat.

M: On the heavier side of medium. Rather thin for the style. Fairly bitter, but it's more a burnt malt bitterness than a hoppy bitterness. Lower carbonation.

O: Not a bad beer. Certainly better than I was expecting it to be. And at $9/bomber, it's fairly reasonably priced. However, I'm not sure this beer is really much of a RIS. More of a stronger stout or, maybe, an Imp Stout.

2010 vintage.

I heard this was really hot when it was first released, so, I've avoided it. Lets see if the fire's out.

Appearance: black, light brown finger of head, light lace.

Aroma: its quite unique, and I'm not sure if its great or peculiar. First off there is some alcohol, that much I can discern. There's a very raw cocoa aroma, mixed with some ground spent coffee grinds. Some dark fruits and toffee as well. Finally, its kinda like a burned kettle with a burnt metal smell.

Taste: the taste is much less ambiguous. Dried cocoa, coffee, heavy roast, with a touch of char, dark fruits and toffee. Booze is muted, thankfully.

Mouthfeel: simply, its fully, low carbonation and slightly chewy.

Overall: I'm sure I'm glad that this is 3 years old. I must admit the aroma was the most unique RIS aroma I've experienced, but a good drink in the end.

22 oz bottle courtesy of fthomal pours a dark black color with small tan head.

Nose is raspberry fruitiness with plenty of cocoa goodness. Not overly sweet, but has a nice vanilla-chocolate-marshmallow aroma going on.

Theres some roasty, hoppy bitterness going on that is totally different than the aroma. Pretty decent taste with the cocoa evident, but I am a little letdown that the aroma is much better than the flavor.

Received in trade from ajzy, thanks for thew opportunity!
Pours a solid dark brown/black color with a decent sized tan head that persists for a while before falling to a cap on top. Smells of roast and chocolate with a solid earthy hop edge and a faint plastic phenol. The flavor is roast and chocolate up front with enough roast and earthy hop flavor to provide more than enough balance. Light bits of dark chocolate and Hershey's syrup mixed with a faint oxidized character round things out. Thick body with a light level of carbonation and a sweet rich chocolate mouthfeel. Nice brew, a couple of minor flaws, I enjoyed it for what is was.
