One of my good friends lived in Tacoma for a few years before moving back home to Vancouver/Portland and finally moving back up to Tacoma where he is now.

He introduced me to The Rock before our location in Vancouver was opened.

The Tacoma Rock has a cool bar inside and the standard theme of rock and roll continues. The bar staff is friendly and the beer is decent...there are plenty of styles to try. I've migrated to the bucket and got wasted here a couple times. Hey, it happens.

The pizza is good stuff.

As you enter you will see the smallish curved concrete bar on your right. It seats about 10 and there is more barroom seating at 1/2 wall near the bar. The rest of the place is restaurant.

It has very high ceilings, exposed brick, and black exposed ductwork. It's kind of an industrial look with a rock & fantasy theme. Note the red lights that add some visual interest.

Classic rock on the sound system. Volume is a bit high for conversation.

Menu is lots of pasta and pizzas. All the pizzas are named after classic rock songs (Saturday Night Special, Bat Out of Hell, Meaty Meaty Big and Bouncy, etc). They also offer a lunch buffet for $8.79 or $9.99 with a brew.

7 regular beers (also named after rock songs) with a couple of guest taps and 2 specials. Nice happy hour prices!

Very friendly bartender adds to the enjoyment.

I wish I had eaten here, but will next time.

Some of the best pizza I have ever had. My friends raved about it and its a Tacoma staple. Pizza is unique and not your typical pizza but I have never had a bad pizza here. The guys here know the beer, Manager Sean is awesome and eagerly seeks out good rotating taps from all over WA and beyond. He and I used to speak and drink beer nonstop. Brian, another bartender is an awesome guy, very outgoing and down right cool. The bar is average size with the restraunt portion being the larger. Don't be annoyed by the panhandlers who hang out around the area. It is Tacoma, so get used to it and its worth it. The "Bucket" is a concoction of Rums served in a beach pale/bucket that will give you a DUIif you dont be careful. The menus are taken from older Rock albums(ZZ Top, BOC and so on) very cool and the music matches it. Very loud and fun, Eric Clapton, Jimi and CCR always blasting plus some bad Company and ZZ Top. If you are waiting on pizza you can go next door to Buzzards and shop for used CDs, DVDs and some really good vinyl!!! I cant forget the Swiss pub on the corner with AWESOME beer and the place to be in Tacoma on the weekends. I see familys in their frequently but I consider it more of a teen, college and local place, especially on the weekend and weeknights. Be ready to wait on weekends. The beers are not brewed on premises(a secret here-they are brewed by Fish brewing in Olympia).

Ok, I may be biased, but I've been going to Rock since it used to be called 'Rock Pasta' back in the day, and it's one of my favorite places for a beer and awesome pizza or pasta. As with many of the newer establishments in the downtown Tacoma area they do a great job of marrying the old industrial style of the building with new architecture that really makes it a unique setting. The theme is classic rock and wood fired pizzas, a great mix that works very well. The food is awesome, very unique pizzas, last night a group of us had the Founder's Pie, Sweet Emotions, and Bat Outta Hell, all were very good.

They have 7 taps right now, 6 of their own and 1 rotating guest beer. They used to have the brewing apparatus right there in the restaraunt when they were small and just a single establishment. But they have recently expanded and you'll find several Rocks around the Puget Sound area (see their website) and they don't brew in the Tacoma Rock anymore, and must have an independent brewer brew for them, I'm not sure. But anyhow, the beers they have in Tacoma are a light pale, a blonde, a red, an ipa, a wheat, and a porter.

Overall it's a great place, the only drawback is the restriction of only serving their few beers and not more of a selection.

This is a great place for a good wood cooked pizza. The building is some sort of old industrial building mixed with a classic rock décor. They have blown up versions of album covers all over the walls and album covers printed on their menus. All of their pizzas are named after old songs and they have some interesting house combinations. The bar has half a dozen beers on tap that are brewed for the Rock and the advertising led me to believe that they had a generic selection of the most common American beers in bottle but I didn’t bother to ask.. I tried their beers and they were very good. When the pizza came the waitress served up the first pieces. The staff was friendly and looked like they were having a good time. If you can fit in some pizza and beer for lunch time head to the Rock for their pizza buffet. It’s not very expensive and you can try a bunch of their pizzas in the same visit.

After a quick tour of Tacoma on a Saturday night, this place looked the best option for a beer and a bite. It was somewhat of a surprise to see the mix theme: pasta meets biker bar. There was a slightly industrial theme with a nice compliment of hard rock. The menus donned covers of old rock albums. I got Kansas, but quickly switched it for SuperTramp. A Meatloaf "Bat out of Hell" poster accurately set the mood, and surprisingly worked. Hovering over us was a 7' replica of a grizzly skeleton, which is a great conversation piece.

There are 6-8 beers on tap that are brewed for Rock, and a full bar offers more options for those less interested in beer. I only had the chance to try one of the beers, and it was decent. The menu selection was great, and we ended up getting a great thai pizza and some garlic/parmesan bread. The prices were good, and despite the rock soundtrack, it wasn't ever too loud to not be able to converse.
