Poured on tap into a pint glass.

A- Pours a murky yellow orange straw color, really nice lacing, well carbonated, one finger off white head.
S- The aroma is very nice, banana, clove, slight citrus, nice light smoked aroma, well balanced, wheat, malt.
T- A little disappointed with the taste, the banana, clove, citrus, taste comes out but the smoked characteristics take over this beer, peppery spice, smoked wood, slight bacon flavor, not my favorite.
M- Medium mouth feel, well carbonated, smooth and creamy drinking, smokey finish.
O- Overall this is not a terrible beer, it does what it’s supposed to do, but it’s not my favorite, big smokey flavor that really overpowered the other flavors in this beer.

I am not a smoked beer fan....and therefor this was my least favorite offering that was available at Town Hall. However, the brewer...nailed it. The combo of Heffe and smoke certainly raises eyebrows. The appearance was a cloudy yellow with thin white head. The scent was overpowered with smoke and some clove and slight citrus undertones. The taste was powered by smoke followed by slight spice of clove and a lemony citrus. The mouthfeel was good....just dont like smoke. Glad I tried it, but would never do a pint.

Draft. Pours a slightly hazed straw color with a slight white head. The aroma is smoky but after that you also get some nice Belgian yeast (banana) and spice notes. Medium mouthfeel. The initial taste is smoky which transitions to a decent normal hef then back to smoke. The smoke lingers for a while. Overall, a nice beer with less smoke than other beers but a nice balance between the sweetness of a hef and he smoke of of a true smoke beer.

As I drank this one down, I wondered to myself: "Who makes a smoked hefe?!?" But it was interesting enough and not bad at all--although it would not be the first thing I'd run for if I were able to get back to Minnepolis.

Color was a thick orange with lots of fizz and some haze on top. It was served VERY cold. Whiffs of banana and spices--but no smoke yet! The taste got into the smoke--a smoked cheese (like a smoked mozzarella) and definitely some sausages in there, too. The smokey flavor intertwined with a wheaty taste as well, which added to the mouthfeel and gave me something to like in the brew. Something of a bitter character in the aftertaste, dryish. Finishes nice.

I don't happen to love smoked beers or smoked cheese, but I DO like smoked beers more than smoked cheeses. Innovative beer.

Had on-tap late August, 04

A - pours a a cloudy, hazy yellow

S - smells of smoked malts, bacon, ham, and some sweet citrus

T - taste follows the nose well. Sweet, wheat malts and citrus flavors are up front. This is followed by a smoked meat and malt flavor. The two realms o this beer are blended together really nicely.

M - mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation

D - pretty solid smoked hefe. The flavors were well balanced for a smoked beer.

Town Hall Smoked Hefe
Cloudy amber-gold colored beer with medium retention and no lacing. Strong smoked pepper notes in the aroma with no hints of the base beer. Taste, however, has more dimensions. Fruity sweet hefe to begin, followed by rather "green" chili flavors. Turns out it's actually brewed green! Definite heat at the back.

On tap at the brewpub...

Nicely hazy pineapple yellow color, soft head of over 1/2 an inch of glistening suds. Laces in vertical strings and dots. Estery aroma, just shy of bubblegum with a slight nutiness, couldn't pick up a smokiness. Mouthfeel is medium and the carbonation is fluffy and appropriate. Flavor is a little to sweet for me, banana and subtle unripe bartlett pear. Lack of a lemony sense of overtly smoke tones to add a next layer of interest. Creamy finish, quaffable, but a brew that I was expecting a little more interest from.

On tap at Town Hall Tap in hefe glass. Great orange color with thick white head, the way a hefe should look, but a bit deeper orange. Smells of crazy smoke. Tastes of crazy smoke, bacony, and citrus. While I am a big fan of hefe beers, I'm not a real big fan of smoked beers. But this isn't that bad. I'm glad I got it, but wouldn't get again.

a: the beer is a hazy golden amber in colour with a white head that shows good retention

s: the standard weizen base carries a moderate sweetness and aromas of green banana, lots of yeast and some light clove, subtle grassy hops

m: light-medium in body with a lively carbonation

t: wheaty (surprise!) body, nice level of hardwood smoke keeps good balance, underripe banana, some clove, nice and yeasty, grassy noble hops with a mild bitterness

my only complaint with this one is that some heavier banana ester and clove would really make a nice compliment to the smoke, though in this example they seem to be about average for the style

d: just fine, if an anticlimactic #1400

consumed on the brewpub patio

Pours 1/2 finger of white head. Color is hazed dirty straw yellow.

Aroma: Pretty much a hefe with light smoke. Bananas, cloves, wheat, and light orange peel.

Taste: Light smoke roast flavor with wheat. Orange peel with bananas and cloves. The smoke flavor is not overpowering and adds a really unique, but awesome flavor to this beer.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy. Very refreshing. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends smokey.

Overall, very drinkable for something I was leery to try. A perfect amount of smoke to not overpower the hefe but add an awesome distinction to the beer. Very impressed with what TH did on this one.

Huge fan of smoke beers, so I was naturally drawn to this one.

Served in a pint glass. A murky and cloudy yellow color. Not much in the way of head or lacing.

A rich bacony and campfire smoke dominates the nose. A touch of wheat and clove behind.

The smoke is the highlight here. Notes of clove and banana are there in true hefe form. Smoked bacon blends beautifully with the hefeweizen flavors. This is a great flavor combo.

Pretty dry, not a lot of carbonation, but it works. Medium bodied.

I enjoyed this one quite a bit. I don't think I could drink more than one, but I would absolutely get this one again. Nice beer.

Presentation: Growler poured into a pint glass, but had a pint on tap at TH, so some residule memories from there as well.

A: Hazy golden glow with a white head that leaves a lace. Very "hefe" looking.

S: A cool assualt of the smoke and clove/banana of the hefe yeast. It fights back and forth for control of your nose.

T: Smooth with the smoke nicely integrated into the hefe taste that TH Hefe is famous for. Compared to the tap, the growler losing a step on the smoke in nose and taste, but still a nice balance, which, depending on your view, I'm guessing someone with a smoke like or dislike will prefer one from over the other. If the smoke was too much on tap, get a growler and drink it again--might change for you.

M: medium and to style. Light w/out being thin.

D: Easy and goes down with only the slightest struggle from the smoke, which lingers a bit in your mouth. Again, if you like smoke and sucking on charcoal, the growler won't last long.

Overall--an interesting an fine blending of smoke with the regular fantastic hefe of TH. Well worth the effort to have a pint.

Finally got around to rating this one. Thanks to my cuz STUBOB for picking up a growler of this on one of his trips to Town Hall. I actually first sampled this one at the Autumn Brew Review. Anyway on to the review. It pours to a clowdy yellow-orange color with a white head. The aroma is of cloves, fruits -- Bananas, and wheat. The smokiness was almost undetectable in the aroma. The flavor is of wheat, cloves and bananas, and a subdued smokiness. It was however a refreshing light-bodied brew, just not enough smoke to call it a Smoked Hefe.

Sampled 9/19/03

Whitish shade of a cloudy yellow, very strange lookin' color, with a puffy white head that fades to a small skim and lots of thin patchy lace thats drippy. Smell has a great yeasty grab right of the bat with the smokey senses of smoked bacon and has a frothy easy malt backing and sweetish wheat with some banana and lemon notes and very light clove. Taste has lightly sour lemon-like tendencies, the smokey sense is there but in a subdued mix in with some of the airy light malts and wheat sweetness, some banana floats around, touch of clove and spice. Clean, fresh, slightly sharp, nearly full bodied with a wheaty light texture in its feel, quite lively and refreshing. One of my favorites that I kept going back for during the Autumn Brew Review to help beat the heat, actually liked it so much, me and a few other BA's headed over to Town Hall for a full pint soon after we had our share at the Review. Good stuff, very drinkable and easy going, soothing hefe.

Marvelously murky tawny topped by a semi-creamy crown of manila colored foam. I thought the yeast might have settled to the bottom during the 12 hours the growler has been upright. I'm glad that it didn't. What could be better than an opaque, smoky looking smoked ale?

Smoked Hefe smells like... a smoked hefe. The beechwood smokiness doesn't dominate, but rather complements the fruit and spice of the base beer in perfect fashion. It smells like this would be a wonderfully aromatic hefe weizen even without the smoke. With it, it's a treat for the nose. I've never smelled anything quite like it.

SH is good beer that doesn't quite reach the excellence of the other Town Hall offerings that I've been lucky enough to acquire. That may be partly due to the less than ideal mouthfeel. In turn, the less than ideal mouthfeel might be because I'm drinking this growler two days past its 'best by' date. On the other hand, it isn't like it's a week past. Besides, it couldn't be helped.

As I empty my first glassful, I'm tempted to nudge the flavor score to the next highest number (but don't). Again, there are no surprises here, just a classic hefe weizen with a near perfect amount of wood smoke. These two flavors go together at least as well as coffee and stout.

I've never eaten a smoked banana sprinkled with ground clove, but this is what it must taste like. My hefe weizen banan-o-meter score tops out at 3.5/5.0. Have I said how utterly perfect the various flavors are proportioned and how well they fit together? Looks like I'll have to use drinkability to reflect the fact that the flavor is on the precipice between good and great. Besides, it really is insanely drinkable beer.

Ah, the mouthfeel. I wish I had been able to drink this offering fresh out of the kettles. Since I doubt that it has suffered too much in the interim, I don't feel too bad about the score granted. The bottom line is that it's a bit too thin and doesn't have the creamy lushness that I like in beer of this style. (Edit: warming brings about most of what I was looking for, and didn't get, in my first, admittedly cold, 16 ounces).

Smoked Hefe is oh so close to greatness. I don't know why more craft brewers don't release something along these lines. As noted above, this is a natural pairing as far as I'm concerned. A pint after mowing the lawn and a final pint as a nightcap. Yesiree, I'm set for the rest of the day. Thanks M.

On my first stab at this unique and wonderful ale, I gulped too quick and totally missed the smoke character. "What-a-weizen?" Lesson learned, that concentration is key!
A cloudy yellow color, with a tight, yet fluffy white collar of foam.
Aroma, mellow and citric, not yet giving off the smoke factor.
Down the lips, smoooth, yet tantalizingly tasty and hearty, too. Then the smoke effect becomes discernible, asserts itself and shines on the palate, slowly, but surely rising to prominence on the flavor profile. Curls up in the mouth, the teeth, the gums, gets all up in there. Goes down very smooth, with a full and invigorating flavor.
Smoke is subtle, but lingers on the palate and never quite leaves. Not the first time I was surprised by a Town Hall brew, and destined to not be the last.

on-tap at the brewpub

cellphone notes

appearance: served in a standard pint - bright, yet hazy, golden-straw body, foamy white head

smell: clove, hefe yeast, fair amount of smoke, banana. I'm not sure i've ever smelled a beer quite like this one

taste: This tastes exactly how I imagined from just reading the name - The base hefe seemed quite strong with bananas, clove, sharp yeast and citrus. The smoke adds a little spice and depth to the flavor - unique for sure

mouthfeel: much like a hefe - lively and creamy, a touch of spice at the end

drinkability: good
