Huge thanks to TastyTaste for a growler of this gem.
Rust copper color with less than a finger of light tan head...a skimming remains on top with some spotty lacing holding strong.
The smell is great...vanilla, bourbon, maple, and a hint of alcohol to supply a touch of nasal burn.
Taste is simply amazing...sweet up front with fig, more vanilla, coconut, and a liquor quality from the barrel aging. Has some port qualtity in the finish...ends quite dry. Not picking up a lot of the oak flavor, which I like.
Mouthfeel is one of the thicker barleywines I've enjoyed and the carbonation is perfect...preferably a sipper, but dangerously drinkable at 11%.
One of the few beers I would consider to be simply phenomenal...all of my expectations were met.

On tap at the brewpub. Poured into a 10 oz. Chalice glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark brownish amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles and about one finger of off white head that sticks a little then fades into a thin layer. Moderate amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: Big aroma of bourbon upfront along with oak, vanilla, and a sweet aroma of bready caramel and toffee malts. Also some fruity esters with hints of grapefruit and orange peel. Light hints of maple syrup and earthy hops. A considerable amount of alcohol lingers in the aroma as well.

Taste: Big taste of bourbon with a light taste of oak and vanilla. Nice taste of citrus esters with hints of orange peel and grapefruit. Bready caramel malts follow with good hints of toffee. Light hints of maple syrup linger around with a pretty noticeable taste of alcohol. Finishes with some moderately bitter earthy hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with a moderate level of carbonation. Somewhat chewy. This feels fairly hot but is manageable if taken slow.

Overall: The barrel aging adds an interesting twist to an already great Barleywine. The citrus isn't as vibrant as the regular version and the heat is turned up by the bourbon.

Poured a deep red/amber. A bit hazy with a thin yet still ky white head.

The smell was very bourbon dominated with a
Big sweetness and lots of vanilla, a touch of grapefruit comes through az well.

The flavor was dominated by the whiskey as well. Almost tasting more like they just added I right to the beer than barrel aged it. Very sweet and full of toffee and vanilla, has a big blast of grapeffuity bitterness that helps balance it out a bit.

The mouthfeel was warm and a bit oily.

Overall a rather average barrel aged beer, the flavors are fine, but they don't seem to mesh very well.

Inflatablechair busted out this rarity on the eve of his annual haircutting party... Very cool Sam... This is a real surprise.

Growler shared between not enough people... Thankfully, we're troopers.

Pours lightly hazed deep brown/walnut... short lasting tan head... descent lacing... and an okay cap.

Wow... caramel and whiskey in the nose.... boozy (not terribly) with plenty of vanilla, oak, and brown sugar.

Flavor is very oaky.. Eric said "maple syrup", I can see that.. sweet and rich, yet not cloying... not as much bourbon as the aroma, yet all the components are there and make this a winner.... could maybe use more hop bitterness and flavor hops mid palate to help balance out the malts, but really no big loss... the focus is malt and barrel forward and I like it... a bunch.

Body was pretty full... carbonation was lite lending toward a silky smooth body.. never really seems muddy, but still could stand to be dialed in a bit.

Again, Wow... Sammy you're a good buddy... and the fact that you went out of your way to score and share this treat proves it.

Pours reddish brown with a big creamy off-white head. Good retention and lacing.

Lots of sweet caramel and toffee in the aroma along with wood and a good bourbony boozy smell

Follows the nose pretty closely. Big rich toffee and caramel notes up front before receding into a boozy finishing kick. Finish features a ton of vanilla, some wood and noticeable, but not harsh bourbon.

Creamy mouthfeel although more on the medium side than something thick and sludge like. Medium to low carbonation levels.

Absolutely amazing beer. I think barrel aged barleywines may be my favorite style, but even among them this stands out. I like mine big and boozy so if booze isn't your thing, may want to let this set a while. I think it's well integrated and a good mixture of booze and traditional barleywine components. Tons better than Czar Jack.

Clear auburn body with a lasting one finger head. Big boozy whiskey aroma, caramel, coconut - quite a bit of heat but it works in this context. Palate is hot and boozy with caramel, sweet coconut and a ton of whiskey. Body is medium, a bit thin for the style. Finishes oaky, boozy and sweet. A solid BA bareywine, but decidedly second tier.

750ml shared by Todd (immobilisme) at Zwanze 2012. Thanks!

A: Pours a dark amber with a good light tan head.

S: Thick toffee and vanilla in the nose, with a hint of maple and oak. The barrel influence is smooth and not quite as in-your-face as other highly regarded BA barleywines.

T: Caramel, toasted coconut, bourbon and oak, and a palpable hop bitterness on the end.

M. Thick, light carbonation.

O: Not the most assertive BA barleywine, but certainly tasty.
