Dark with a very good dark brown colored head... a good looking beer this one is.
Fruit preserves, general tartness and faint coffee in the aroma. Tastes tart, dark fruity, chocolate cherries, with a lingering roast. Kinda "Belgian" style in its strong tartness, that is similar to the strongly charred character of Belgian stouts, and in its high carbonation + clean finish. Medium feel.
Disappointing in that one of the double barrels (bourbon) is felt only in the booze.
7 bucks/12 oz.

On tap at Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery. 12oz served in a tulip glass today, 4/19/2014.
A- looks just like Czar Jack. Pitch black, one finger dark mocha head with good retention, less than CJ but still substantial. No lacing.
S- served too cold, but when it warms up you get a fairly complex nose full of roast malt, milk chocolate, bourbon, tannins and a dry oakiness. The red wine gets to overpower the bourbon at full room temperature but the base beer still holds up really well.
F- milk chocolate, raisins, figs and coffee sit at the base of the beer supplemented by a dry tannic but jammy flavours coming from the red wine. The bourbon is a bit lost in all the red wine tannins, but given that this is just as sweet as CJ, perhaps it is not all lost behind the red wine. Nice and complex with a good evolution of flavours over time.
Mouthfeel- medium bodied, lower carbonation than CJ but enough for the style. It's a sipper as the back end is a very, very dry red wine-like one. I'd have to guess Cabernet.
Overall- really interesting and complex beer that evolves incredibly well over time. This is well worth trying whenever they have this beer on tap, indeed! I'm very glad to have tried this and especially with wine drinkers in tow!
