Traditional oatmeal stout. The silky smooth oatmeal lends itself perdectly to the intense roasted malt character of this dark robust stout.

On tap pours an onyx hue with solid khaki headcap.

Deep aroma despite being hidden by a thick coating. Bold toasted malt and baked cake.

First swigs: Toasted and roasted grain with raisins and figs and buscuit. Endless flavors of maple syrup and pecan. Lingering aftertaste of cocoa.

Feel is smooth and milky slick half 'n half.

Last swigs: THis was so good that I had to debate taking back a growler of this and Masala Mama but I opted for two Masala Mama growlers.

Had this on 2011-11-18 at the downtown brew pub.

A - Deep, dark brown with a 1-finger tan head and moderate lacing.

S - Roasted grain, some milk chocolate and floral spice. Not real strong.

T - Solid and well-balanced. Roasted grain and chocolate, light splash of coffee and a dollop of hop bitterness to help the finish.

M - Medium-heavy body and light-medium carbonation. Moderately thick yet refreshing.

O - Gotta say; this is one fine stout. Doesn't knock you over the head but it does everything right.

had on tap at MTH the appearance was black as night with a nice beige fluffy head that dissipates to a nice beige /cherry ring with some sticky lacing on the side..the smell is chocolate ,molasses roasted coffee plum and some berry smells..the taste was a sweet chocolate and roasted coffee smell with a small amount of oatmeal nothing dominated in this stout but all was present and competing in the flavor it was fantastic and nicely balanced..WOW this is one great stout that is full but at the same time easy to throw back a couple in a hurry really drinkable and highly flavorful a perfect oatmeal stout..highly recommended

on tap at Minneapolis Town Hall -- reviewed from short notes

black body-- like really black. not just dark brown. Very black. Dark tan head with good retention and nice rings of lace.

Smells really weak-- some roasty malt with chocolate undertones. The taste is the same, but it is more dry than expected.

Body is nice and thick-- slightly creamy in feel thanks to a low carbonation level.

Overall, not bad. Not the best oatmeal stout I've had, but not the worst.

On tap at the brewpub. Poured into a standard shaker pint glass.

Appearance: Dark black with a little bit of brown color coming through. Solid three fingers of creamy tan head with good retention and a nice froth. Good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: Dark roasted malts with some chocolate, nuts, oats, milk, and a little coffee. A fairly strong aroma of smoke mixes in with the chocolate. Smells very roasty, robust, and fairly sweet.

Taste: Sweet dark roasted malts up front with some good notes of chocolate, oats, nuts, milk, subtle coffee and lactose. A pretty noticeable taste of smoke lingers around making this taste like a cross between an Oatmeal Stout and Baltic Porter. Very nice.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation. Very creamy, lightly sweet and syrupy, and very smooth. Sweet but finishes moderately dry.

Overall: A very solid oatmeal stout. The smoke and milk flavors add a nice touch.

Pours a dark black color with a tan head which left a nice lace on the glass. Smells of coffee, oatmeal, and chocolate. The taste is the same as the smell. The sweetness of the malt is balanced nicely by the bitter coffee flavor. Medium bodied and medium carbonation. This is a nice, smooth, easy to drink Oatmeal Stout.

Serving glass: On tap, poured into Pint Glass.

Appearance: Black and opaque. Virtually no head or lacing, even when I try to shake it up. Looks thin.

Smell: Roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, licorice.

Taste: Roasty sweetness, nutty flavor, slight bitterness at end.

Feel: Slick feel, low carbonation. Medium bodied but a little thinner than hoped for.

Drinkability: Decent stout overall, but there are many others I would rather choose.

On-tap at the brewpub on 21 November 2013. I've had more of Town Hall's seasonals and rarities, so I'm working my way through their regular line-up. A chilly snowy day calls for a stout.

Pours black, as it should given the name. Brought with one finger of medium-dark tan head. Good retention, nice lacing.

Smell is faint. Smooth and sweet from the oats, a touch of dark roast. It's served too cold to really let the smells out.

Taste is excellent. Deep and rich, with char and dark-roasted coffee. The oats add a delicate sweetness that balances out the bitter in the finish.

Feel is good. Relatively light for a stout, and doesn't have that amazing creaminess that some oatmeal stouts have. But those are quibbles.

A stellar oatmeal stout. Smooth, creamy, deeply roasty. Very nice.

Picked this growler up while in Minneapolis, and although the flavor did not last long, still did not disappoint.
This is a beautiful black brew, with a foamy, sticky and long-lasting tan head.
Very pleasant nose, mostly rich coffee, toffee, caramel.
Rich taste on this very creamy brew starts sweetish, loaded on coffee as expected, full of roasted malts with a mild balancing hops.
Very easy to drink, and very pleasant. Unfortunately, my growler was great on the first night but the following day had to be wasted.
I will, however, try this again when I have the chance.

Reviewed cold from a growler to a glass

A - Black pour, 1 finger of foam, nice brown with a tint of red lacing ring, couldn't tell if there is any carbonation present

S - Vanilla, brown sugar, and malt of course, some coffee notes

T - Oatmeal and malts, some coffee aftertaste

M/D - Another winner from Town hall Minneapolis, a very smooth and drinkable Oatmeal stout, highly recommend trying this brew and picking up a cheap growler

Was on tap when visited Town Hall which was on nitro-tap. The color was a good dark black with limited color distortion when tipped or held to the light. The head was exceptional as per a nirtro drop would do. A crisp tan color with a creaminess to it. The smell is sweet with a candy liquorish fragrance to it. Stronger roasted and some light plums are noticeable too.

The taste has a nitro twist to it. Makes a creamy taste but also dampens the taste down. The malt has a stronger oatmeal and roasted mixed with black patent taste. More of a chocolate quality then say coffee. A hinted lactose flavor is noticed as well but it’s very subtle. Not quite milk but maybe influenced by the nitro. The hop is minor but limited earthy tastes support the strong oatmeal malt taste.

The beer was full bodied with good carbonation. A good taste that is sweeter then most oatmeal stouts. Overall I’m not a fan of nitro but I think it gave more of a smoother and creamer taste, but also limits the malty flavor.

There was a lot to like about this beer. I thought it exhibited the dry-roastiness of an Imperial Stout while maintaining a lightness on the tongue and dryness of an Irish stout and delivering the light sweet finish of a breakfast stout. So, I would say this is a very pleasant blend of all three styles!

It pours very dark, although not inky like an imperial stout, with a thick nude pantyhose colored head. Aroma was roasty. Flavor was extremely roasty, with hints of coffee, and some slightly sour sweetness at the finish. Mouthfeel was light yet substantial (and wonderful!), and not at all syrupy the way some heavier stouts can be. I found this to be an extremely drinkable, yet extremely flavorful, stout and enjoyed it immensely.

Highly recommended.

A: Black with a light brown head. Decent lacing

S: Dark roasted malts with some sweetness. Smells like a lactose like sweetness. Some nutty characteristics and a bit of chocolate and vanilla as well.

T: Nice blend of roasted malts and a bit of chocolate sweetness. A bit of coffee and a small dose of hops come through as well.

M: Medium to lighter body. Smooth and a bit creamy. Lower carbonation.

O: Good drinkability. Well done, not my favorite oatmeal stout, but better than average.

I poured this one from a growler into a shaker pint glass on 5/11/2009 (part of a great beer trip with BA roadhouse).

A= This stout poured a jet black color (no light passing through this baby) with a 1.5" chocolate brown head. The head dropped slowly and left behind some pretty lace on my glass.

S= Heady aroma of roasted grains, chocolate, treacle, and a bit of coffee. Overall this smelled rich and sweet.

T= Much like the smell, this had a bit of roasty flavor up front, followed by the smooth chocolate and mocha notes. I also found a hint of ripe black-cherry fruitiness in there that clashed just a bit with the roasty malt. Mild earthy hops lead into a sweet finish.

MF= Medium bodied, with the oatmeal giving a significant slickness. Carbobation was moderate to high for the style.

D= A damn drinkable oatmeal stout. The only thing I would change would be to remove that little black-cherry flavor nuance but otherwise this is top notch and would happily drink another growler of it if I could!
