With 90 sterling reviews before me in the database, the Town Hall Brewery is hardly a surprise. It is an exceptional brewpub with great atmosphere, beer, and food. A must-visit in Minneapolis and as worthy as any brewpub I've ever visited of a long-distance pilgrimage.

The decor is restrained: the brewery has a front bar, a summer patio, and a back dining room/lounge. All three are sparsely decorated, though the old building is well restored. It is inviting without being over-the-top, and the division of space keeps it from feeling too big. The windows looking out onto the street are the main source of ambient light and give the place a darkish feel.

They had nine brews on tap--the five regular offerings (IPA, dortmunder, English bitter, Scottish ale, oatmeal stout), plus their English IPA, summer wheat pale ale, milk porter, and mango mama. Add in a few carefully selected guest taps (Southern Tier, Duchesse, Rodenbach, Aechta) and the selection is really overwhelming. Every single one of the house beers was exceptional, with special kudos for the oatmeal stout, IPAs, mango mama, and summer ale. I have never encountered a brewpub with such a strong and consistent set of offerings.

Food and service are both fine, and prices are reasonable.
The Town Hall--like Fitger's up in Duluth, MN--takes the traditional brewpub and does it exceptionally well. This is an ideal place for drinking great beer.

Overall, a good brewpub with outstanding beers, and so-so food. Very cool atmosphere. Terrific outdoor seating area open in the Summer.

Town Hall has always had a very warm, nostalgic atmosphere, which seems to be enhanced since their renovations. Their normal beer lineup is pretty solid (esp. the IPA) though I have to admit I was a little let down by the seasonals at my last visit. Often their brews are on the sweet side for my personal taste. I was struck by the quality of their guest beer selection, and kind of wish I had ordered one of those in retrospect. Also, they have a nice hard cider selection and a decent scotch list. The food has always been decent pub fare. I have had issues with service in the past but this time it was pretty seamless. I definitely recommend Town Hall. Even if you decide you don't like their beers the guest beer list should have at least something that appeals to you.
