Poured bottle into Dogfish Head tulip glass, yielding one fingers pretty white head of a rootbeer colored beer.

Initial aroma is of molasses, for sure. With nice plum, fig, date and raisin lingering below. Slight toffee. Faint cherry.

Up front crisp raisin hits, which leads into biscuity, caramel, super oily middle, with a sweet pruney taste dissolving into warming alcohol finish, that's sweet but never cloying -- I promise. There are some nice earthy tones in there, that take full advantage, and make quite the pairing, with the mushroom and onion pizza I'm chowing on.

Overall, I always eat nice pizzas with SkullSpliter whenever I can. If in Bloomington, IN, stop by Finch's and have this one with the Dordogne (four earthy cheeses, truffle honey, and prosciutto). It's a freakin' delight. It yanks up the earthiness, melds its sweetness with the honey, turning the prosciutto into a sweet, breakfast-worthy, divine swine.

It's crisp, and it can handle earthy and sweet heavy pizzas like a charm. Take full advantage of this beer. It will turn a so-so earthy dinner into a damn good meal.

A perfect example of the style. Rich, malty, and complex, with darker fruit notes, and hints of peat. Slick, slightly oily mouthfeel, and a creamy, lingering head. Dangerously drinkable, and insanely well done. (I'm on vacation, so this is a half-assed review.) Cheers!!!

Had this while eating muscles in garlic sauce. First mouthful gives the impression of cough mixture, but this soon dissipates to a smooth drink. Pours lovely from the bottle with a nice colour to it. Enjoyed the experience but don't think I'll be adding it to my regular list

Bottle at 40 degrees into snifter
Aroma of malt
Head small (1 cm), off white, creamy, rapidly diminishing to 2 mm ring and broken layer
Lacing virtually none
Body dark red amber
Flavor of sweet malt and caramel; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl, no peaty smokiness
Palate full, creamy, soft carbonation

I first had this in a restaurant in Kirkwall, before I knew what a wee heavy was. Then I didn’t particularly care for it. Now, however, I find it to be a delightful drink with the alcohol well hidden. This meets the criteria for a Scotch ale very well.
