I picked up a bottle of Saugatuck's Starbust Wheat last week for $1.59 at The Lager Mill. I'm always down to try a new beer from Saugatuck and since it's the time when brewerys start to release their wheat beers I thought i would give this one a try, so lets see how it goes. Bottled on 1/14/15.. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.

A- The label looks good, it's got a nice design to it and it's eye catching. It poured a nice slightly gold orange color that took on more of a brighter amber orange color when held to the light with one and a half fingers worth of bubbly off white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left some spotty and patchy lacing behind. This is a pretty nice looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the fruits being the first to show up with some nice orange juice like aromas coming through and it's quickly followed by some tropical fruit and citrus fruit hops that make for a nice pineapple orange juice like aroma with just a slight bit of floral and green hops showing up in the background. Up next comes a slight bit of doughy yeast with some some sweet malt, bready, pale malts ans wheat aromas coming through. This beer has a good aroma, I like the way the hops worked with the base beer.

T- The taste seems to be pretty similar to the aroma and it starts off with a just a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the that same nice mixture of oranges and fruity hops making for a nice pineapple orange juice flavor and there's still a light amount of green and floral hops showing up in the background. Up next comes a slight bit of doughy yeast with the malts showing up also and they impart the same aspects that they did in the aroma, but they are a little lighter. On the finish there's a higher amount of light bitterness with a nice hoppy and orange pineapple juice like flavors showing up in the aftertaste. This is a pretty nice tasting beer, the hop profile works nicely with the base beer.

M- Smooth, a little crisp, a little refreshing, on the very light side of being medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel was good and it worked well with this beer, I have no complaints.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and I thought it was a pretty nice example of the style, it had just about everything that I look for in the style with the hops showing up nicely and they worked nicely with the base beer to make for a good combination. This beer has good drinkability, it's smooth, a little crisp, a little refreshing, not filling and the taste does a nice job at holding my attention, I could drink a few of these especially when the weather is warmer. What I like the most about this beer was the hop profile it was pretty nice and it worked great with the base beer. What I like the least abouit this beer was nothing, there isn't anything I disliked or would change, it's fine just the way it is. I would buy this beer again, especially when in it gets warmer outside and I would recommend this beer. All in all I was happy with this beer, I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out, but in the end I thought the different aspects worked well with each other and it made for a tasty beer. It's one of the better Saugatuck beer's i've had and it's one of the better example of the a hoppy wheat ale that I've had. Good job guys, I enjoyed this beer, keep up the hard work.

Cloudy gold pour with lots of citrus hop in the nose. Smells of fruit and wheat (like a hefeweizen) come through a little. Taste is hop forward, but the wheat kicks in a takes over a bit. Body of this one is nice and slightly silky.

Overall, this beer becomes too wheat focused after the first few sips - tastes like a 312 with a hop nose. Good variety in the Saugatuck lineup, but not up to the wheat pale ale standard that other breweries have set.

Label- very cool label. Simplistic, yet entertaining. Not sure why, but have to rate this in my top 5 of labels. Well done Saugatuck BR.

Taste- first taste gives false hope. Just when you think your drinking Gumball Head you take another drink and you soon realize this is a poor effort at imitating GH. Not sure what happens, but fizzles quickly.

Overall- the label is cool enough to at least try the beer. Good effort from a small brewery and I will most likely feed my liver more of this one.

Closest thing to gumballhead I have ever tried, but with more citrus notes to it.

Great beer on its own, but well deserving of the comparison.

I was told this was intended to be something along the lines of a Michigan Gumballhead...I didn't find it to be nearly as similar as I wanted and expected.

The appearance was as expected for a beer with 'wheat' in the name, a light, cloudy pour. Head not as fluffy and prolonged as I would have liked. The aroma is definitely wheat, with a bit of citrus, a faint hoppiness, and zero alcohol coming through.

Taste is on par with a lesser wheat offering, again with a bit of citrus (but not banana or bread). The malt profile is all but lacking, which again was a surprise given the expectations of a GBH competitor.

On it's own, Starburst is an easy sipper with a nice, light flavor. I came into this one with expectations that were set too high, which isn't a fault of the beer nor the brewery. I would certainly drink again, just in a different light.
