A rich Russian Imperial Stout aged in oak bourbon barrels for 10 months. A high alcohol content is a staple of this savory Stout, weighing in at 9.5% ABV. The malt profile provides huge roasted, chocolate and dark fruit flavors, paired with heavy bourbon characteristics and oak flavors.

For those of you who like a classic, additive and adjunct free BBA Stout, this is a great choice.
Unfortunately it is only available in the brewery these days, I’ve not seen it packaged in at least 4 years.
Tons of malty goodness and bourbon touches that accentuate and not dominate this beer. Just smooth and delicious. Damn good beer.

Thanks to superspak for this one. Record in NBS BIF (#12 I think).
Bottle stamped "PKGD 061718"
Lovely looking. Deep dark, almost black. Charred cocoa colored head, tiny densely packed bubbles could totally float the cap. Clumpy lacing. Great retention.
The nose abounds in graceful, nuanced, old school RIS: roast, cocoa, dark fruit, with hints of tobacco, earth, and anise. The barrel chimes in with smooth boozy warmth.
Flavor profile was thoroughly foreshadowed by the nose. What I love is the complexity and old school approach. The flavors are melded well, yet you could pull so many different components out, enjoy them, and then enthusiastically embrace the next note that steps forward. But none over the top, nobody steals the spotlight here. Not overly sweet at all.
Mouthfeel is spot on for style, decent heft, hidden ABV, and a smooth finish.
Overall, this is killer.

Pour is an onyx black with some subtle leakage to mahogany on the edges and a dense tan head. The nose leads off with stone fruit, some dark chocolate and a big barrel whiff.
The taste is significantly smoother, with the oak and vanilla barrel notes complementing the dark chocolate exceptionally well, IMHO. The mouthfeel is a bit thinner than I’d expect with a beer of this gravitas.
Still a pleasure to drink, Saugatuck is doing things the right way.

On tap at Crimson, York PA. Pours a very dark brown/black with a minimal tan head. Initial impression is roasted malts, bourbon, dark chocolate, charred oak, and a little pine hops for good measure. Mouthfeel is thick and smooth; carbonation is light. Finish is smooth and smoky. My first offering from Saugatuck and it was a good one.

L - 1-finger hazelnut head atop a black body.
S - roast, soy, chocolate, caramel, dark fruit.
T - surprisingly bitter roast and chocolate, with barrel quickly following. The soy taste mixed with the bourbon is somewhat harsh, but with the name of this beer perhaps that’s intentional? Moderate bitterness. Low sweetness. Moderate booziness.
F - medium body and carb.
O - harsh on the body, and I’m ok with it, just like a real...uh...never mind.

On tap. Poured an opaque, jet-black color with a small, light brown head of foam. It smelled of bourbon, oak, vanilla, molasses and toffee. Big bourbon flavor with some dark chocolate, burnt molasses and toffee.

12 oz bottle sent from superspak, poured into Carpe Brew'Em snifter. Dated 06/07/18.
Deep silky obsidian pour with a creamy ring of head about a fingernail's height. Stays put.
Oaky sweet bourbon invades the nose supplemented by notes of hot fudge, dark chocolate, wood, milk sugar, and maple nut goodies.
The oak comes out swinging right away, followed by bitter dark chocolate, slight earthy/piney hop, perfume-y hop, cinnamon, more wood, caramel/toffee, hints of vanilla, and whispers of bourbon.
Feel is creamy and slick to start, with a biting and busy carbonation, then the alcohol heat creeps in and blends with some excellent balancing dryness.
While not stellar, this is a capable bourbon barrel aged RIS that deserves a hard look.
