12 ounce bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It has a cloudy amber body with golden highlights. An inch of off-white head sits on top.

S - As soon as I cracked the bottle I smelled skunk weed. I think this is the first beer that I thought smelled like marijuana. After it set a couple minutes that aroma dissipated. I was able to smell some caramel malt then.

T - I get a strong malt backbone. It finishes with some bitter pine trying to cut through the malt. It is moderately successful.

M - It seems full for an IPA.

O - I picked up a couple Saugatuck beers on a recent visit to Michigan. I'll just say that I hope the other beer tastes better.

Appearance: Pours a nice orangish/golden color…very inviting…some bubbles, but not many and there is little to no head…(3.5/5)

Smell: Super citrusy…very orange and grapefruit dominant…that’s really all I can smell…(3.5/5)

Taste: Wow…that is tasty…it’s citrusy, but the piney hops and subtle malts balance it out very nicely…it’s not lemony, it’s orangey/grapefruity, which does differentiate this citrus American IPA from the lot in this category…crisp and smooth, I don’t taste the higher ABV this one has…(4/5)

Mouthfeel: Light and nicely carbonated…some citrus linger and a bit of bitterness in the after taste but leaves the mouth refreshed with it’s crisp flavor…(3.75/5)

Overall: I like this beer…I’ve gone through a bunch of IPA’s and AIPA’s and this one definitely stands out from the others…while it does have all the classic fixins of a AIPA, the grapefruit and orange flavors are unique, balancing out the hops and alcohol…it’s refreshing, flavorful, distinct and 7% ABV…feelin’ good, lookin’ good! (4/5)

On tap at Fishbones in Detroit. Pours an amber color, mild clarity; the beer arrived with nearly no head at all except for a tiny, tiny collar around the very edge of the glass. Smell is upfront with the traditional hop-citrus combo; piney, herbal, and a bit spicy with oranges and grapefruit being the easiest fruits to pick out. Taste is no surprise, thanks to the aroma. Hop flavors crash first; pines, dry grass, leafy and herbal, with a slight peppery spice that starts off like it's going to be a problem, but then quickly shows itself to the background. The sweetness comes through a little while after to try and combat the hops. Oranges, grapefruit, and maybe a touch of pineapple. Slight caramel flavor from the malt, but far from heavy by any means. Medium body, pretty average amount of carbonation.

I enjoyed this beer, but I feel like it does nothing to really stand out in front of the vast majority of other IPAs out there. At a place that serves mainly BMC products on tap, this was a great choice. But in a store filled with hundreds of other beers, I'd probably never bother to revisit this one.

Bottle from Bob (klipper). Short-filled, so I'm guessing it was an employee take-home bottle. Code on bottom of the bottle says 282 12 B1W 0657 - bottled October 8th perhaps? Served in a Half Acre pint glass.

A - A half-finger of white foam settles to a very thin cap and thicker collar, leaving a bit of lacing behind. Very lightly hazed golden color with some visible bubbles.

S - Balanced East Coast vibe, with earthy, piney, and herbal hops dominating, on only a touch of citrus in the periphery. Perhaps a bit of cat pee as well. Biscuit and brown sugar malt backbone that's perhaps a bit cloying.

T - Again, very old-school, with palate-bruising bitterness and heavy grapefruit in the finish. The taste is very leafy and herbal, with pine and trace citrus. Malt is a bit more neutral in comparison to the aroma, with more of a bready vibe to it.

M - Medium body that's a bit watery and flaccid. Pleasant active carbonation, fairly dry in the finish, with an oily and resinous residual texture. Only the mildest alcohol warming near the end of the 12oz bottle.

D - This would have been good in 2006, but it's merely acceptable in 2012. You can still make killer IPAs with Columbus and Cascade if you try, but this has too much bitterness and is awfully heavy on the Columbus herbal flavors. Fine for a bottle, but not something I'd revisit.

Straw yellow orange that is not very clear at all, band of white around the top.
Nose is biscuit like with faint cascade hop like notes throughout, nothing very interesting and the aromatics don't really leap out, subdued.
More orange on the palate, light sweetness up front that fades into bready flavors.
mouthfeel is medium and could benefit from more carbonation.

Single bottle, unknown date, a string of numbers on the bottom reads "0102 B2 0919".

Pours into a Bells tulip a high clarity orange, bright and jewel toned in the glass, an ample head of creamy foam, and plenty of lacing left behind. Looks good.

Smells a bit muted and mild. Bready pale malt with a hint of something floral and a touch medicinal.

Slick syrupy feel with a moderate bitterness and a trace of metallic notes in the back. Trace pine bitterness, bready sweet malts in the middle. Pretty ho hum and middle of the road. One and done here.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

There are legendary ghost towns on Lake Michigan? You learn something new all the time, right? Anyway, this stuff pours a clear brass topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises dark greens, light pine needles, toffee, and a few brief cameos from grapefruit zests in the back. The taste brings in more of the same, with some brighter and more plentiful grapefruit, sweeter toffee (approaching caramel), less earthiness in the greens, and a touch of leek, which dashes a lot of the previous gains. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation, a generally slick feel, and an ever-so-slightly sticky finish. Overall, an okay IPA, but one that never really finds a time to truly shine, leaving it to kinda wallow in an earned obscurity.

Appearance: Arrives with a somewhat hazy amber color; the head displays nice retention and leaves some lacing behind

Smell: Citrusy and piney, with grapefruit and other tropical fruit elements

Taste: The hop flavors dominate, up front, bringing citrus and pine along with some tropical fruit; the bread and caramel in the malt balances out the hops, in the middle; nicely balanced in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A decent IPA; nothing spectacular but a nice, middle of the road IPA

Not overly impressed with this one. To me its closer to an English style IPA than an AIPA. Nevertheless, the appearance is nothing remarkable, clear golden color (I was able to avoid the massive settlement at the bottom of the bottle) with thin almost non existent white head. The smell is more bittering hops as well as the taste. The first few sips let's one know that alcohol is prevalent. The mouthfeel is fuller in body with decent carbonation. Overall its ok....just expect more of an standard english IPA.

Bottle into nonic pint.

Clear, bright, and shiny yellow body with a shimmering white head. Good retention. Weak lacing.
Smells a little boozy, over a predominantly dry bready malt bill with a hint of sugar cookie. The hops are mainly citrusy, but I find the nose a bit muted.

The flavor also comes off a bit muted, at least as far the hops are concerned. The finish is quite dry, little abrasive, and very bitter.

Body is fine-- medium, very carbonated- effervescent feel.

Overall-- not bad... But not that impressive. I prefer more flavor/aroma over straight bitterness, but this beer is decent enough I suppose. Nothing is offensive at least.

A - pours an orangish yellow color with a nice frothy head that pretty much vanishes into the beer

S - nose is grass, pine, and citrus hop...smells nice

T - taste is similar. First on the tongue are the citrus flavors picked up in the nose. These move to more of a grainy malt flavor, but the hops surge back bringing bitter pine hops and some grapefruity rind bitterness.

M - smooth and full bodied, goes down well

D - this is a nice IPA. Hoppy, fruity, and bitter pine all come together to form the singapore IPA. I would recommend this if you are in the Saugatuck area.

A nice IPA. A bit too much ink and iodine on this, but it still works. Hearty hop characteristics contribute to a very earthy and hearty ipa that avoids the "light" and powerful citrus/oily/pine hop tone and sticks with a more robust and deeper offering. It could stand to be a bit more vibrant, imo.

A: Carefully poured cold into a Weisen glass, Singapore IPA yielded absolutely zero head, minor lacing on the glass as you tilt it to and fro. However, the actual color is a rich golden amber...like when you wake up after a long night and take a good piss!

S: Mild, floral scent, hints of citrus hops, finishing with fresh pine needle notes. Not overwhelming in either a good or bad way- just a good, adequate amount of all elements mentioned.

T: This is where Singapore IPA lets you down...the carbonation is quite strong...too strong for an IPA, in my opinion. The actual flavors are quite subdued; sadly, none of the relative complexities I smelled initially translate into the taste. Really, this has more in common with an Adjunct American Lager than a craft IPA...I'm even getting aftertaste notes of corn. Not cool!

M: Tingly carbonation, watery, lingering moistness...qualities I would frankly expect from a Miller High Life, not a craft IPA. Disappointing...

O: The appearance and smell of this beer belie the lack of substance within. I'm a big IPA fan, and I REALLY tried to like this beer- but frankly, Saugatuck's Singapore IPA is like a sheep in wolves' clothing- all bark, but no bite when push comes to shove.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into an English "pot" pint glass.
Cloudy, orange/gold in color, with a nice, frothy head of bone-white foam.
Aroma-Foral hop note
Taste-Nice punch of floral and citrus hops. Grapefruit rind juiciness and bitterness carries to the finish. Snappy and tasty. Classic American IPA. My first offering from Saugatuck and a very pleasant and enjoyable one. Well done.
