The head on this beer, just slightly tinted, starts off fluffy and creamy and settles to a craggy, billowing two fingers. Beyond that, it settles slowly, getting heavier as it does until it almost looks like a solid, though it does settle to a thick, fat island. All the while, it leaves chunky webbing clinging stickily to the top of the glass, followed by spotting.
There's a bright citrus hops bouquet with an accompaniment of floral bitterness and a touch of pine. It's mostly bright and juicy with some tropical fruits as well as citrus and the zest along with it, but it's balanced by mildly sweet malts with a bready character.
The pine and citrus combo is what hits the tongue at first, with just a light resinous pith. A little saltiness flashes in before leafy rawness, then the complementing caramel and breads. It drifts off a little at the end, but it's pretty impressive until then.
The feel is creamy with a light nip off a soft carbonation in a medium body that edges toward the lighter side.

Saugatuck Singapore IPA is foggy enough to pass for a Victorian London alleyway - it'd take Charles Dickens to properly capture this beer's complexion. And yet, ironically, it still has the golden colour of a tropical sunset, making it appear rather bright despite the dense haze. Its head appears like a slide sample, all squished and splattered against the surface.

There's not enough trees in my backyard to match this bouquet's level of leafiness. Distinguished by its crudely earthy and pine qualities, this has enough herbalness to pass for a forest. In lieu of citric or tropical fruitiness, the aroma has a kind of 'cat pee' note which, odd as it sounds, is commonly attributed to Columbus hops. It's actually not such a bad thing.

The pungency is dialed down on the palate, though enough of the leafy and dried herb elements manage to make their mark. Cushioning the bitterness is a (nearly) sweet maltiness that tastes like a Louisiana-style biscuit and provides undertones of honey and cookie-dough. Though it retains its grassiness, the aftertaste ends up being much mellower than expected.

Some might find this brand of pungent bitterness to be a bit much for such a pale, simple malt profile, but I'm enjoying it. Granted, this bottle was opened days from its expiry date so it's possible the hops have faded some, allowing more bready character than was intended. Regardless, it scratches both hop and malt itches and let's on not a fraction of alcohol.

Singapore IPA is a very pleasant example of the style: slightly unconventional (eschewing the citrus and tropical fruits), it still has plenty of leafy, herbal, almost savory hoppiness (thanks in part to a lack of amber or toasted malts) and at neither average nor above average strength (near 7%), it makes a nice alternative to the usual archetype. Certainly enjoyed.

Picked up a bottle on latest trip to Michigan. "130711" is stamped on the label, which I take to be the "best before" date.

Poured a murky orange beer with just under a finger of off-white head on top. This dissipated quickly, leaving nothing but a thin ring.

Smells of earthy and piney hops up front. More searching reveals caramel malt and a hint of grapefruit.

Taste surprised me, it really hits you compared to the nose. Extremely bitter with the pine, and almost tasting dirty with the earthiness. Grapefruit and a hint of spice pop up on the end. Malt is less sweet and less noticeable. It's more crackery.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. It coats the tongue not with a residue but with bitterness.
