Thanks for sharing this excellent tick, Bobby.

A: The beer pours a dark brown with some reddish highlights. On top sits a massive khaki head, filling much of the glass.

S: Things are not off to a good start. There is a weird fruitiness, I would say blueberry. Quite acidic with a mild red wine vinegar note to it. Still plenty of roasted malt, though.

T: The flavor is harsh. Very acidic with quite a bit of vinegar. There are also some cherries and blueberries to it. Lots of roasted malt along with seltzer water and green apple.

M: Light to medium in body with a very high carbonation.

O: Obviously some rogue microbes have made a home in this beer. Not enjoyable.

Bottle dated 282 12 on the bottom, guessing it was bottled in September.

Pours a reddish brown color into a mug, lots of creamy tan foam billows up to just under the rim of the glass. Sticky halo of lacing forms, and a generous unbroken skim remains on the surface after a few sips.

Coarse roasted barley aroma, little bit of dry coffee and chocolate happening.

A mild astringency at first, but it mellows out becoming creamy and roasty later on. Firmly bitter black malt, bakers chocolate and coffee are the signature flavor notes here. Dry and lingering bitter finish, with a touch of burnt grain husks. Overall it's not bad, though it doesn't really hold a candle to Founders Porter.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

Well, is it a pier or a cove? Don't puss out and make it both: take a stand, man! Anyway, this stuff pours a deep garnet-sienna topped by a finger of sandy tan foam. The nose comprises chocolate powder, roasted malts, and a twinge of coffee. The taste brings in more of the same, with the coffee coming to the fore and the roast coming through decidedly darker, roastier. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a generally fluid feel. Overall, a solid porter, one that leans determinedly in favor of heavy roast, but luckily one that doesn't really overdo it in that category.

Poured from a bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown with light only coming through at the edges of the glass. There are two fingers of tan head with good retention and not much lacing.

Smell: Mild smell with some sweet roasted malt and a mild dark chocolate note.

Taste: Strong roasted malt presence with a very mild sweetness accompanying it. There are some very mild dark fruit notes in the background. The finish is smooth and roasty.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a high amount of smooth carbonation and a slick finish.

Overall: I'm not sure why this beer is rated so low. It may not be spectacular, but my bottle was solid. Decent example of the style.

Bottle from Bob (klipper). Bottled 279 12 B1E 0640 - October 5th? Served in a Half Acre pint glass.

A - A half-finger of tan foam settles to a partial cap, chunky collar, and a few stray thin fingers of lacing. Very dark opaque brown body.

S - Solid mix of chocolate, molasses, nuts, roasted barley, a touch of dark bread. Nothing crazy, but a fairly true to style and well-executed.

T - The taste is a tad chalky at first, but it gives way to sweeter molasses and baker's chocolate flavors. There's a bit of char and coffee bitterness in the finish. Some nice flavors, but the astringent and chalky notes mar things a bit.

M - Active and perhaps a bit too zesty carbonation. Medium body that's a tad watery, with a dry and roasty grain husk finish. Probably my least favorite thing about this beer.

D - Nothing special, but better than some of the reviews suggest. I easily drank my 12oz bottle, but I probably wouldn't purchase this again unless there were really limited options, notably Edmund Fitzgerald and Founders.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled 1/7/2012. Pours crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a very nice 2 finger dense khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Some good spotty lacing clings to the glass as well. Aromas of milk chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, nuttiness, toffee, biscuit, herbal hops, and slight smoke. Very nice aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of milk chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, biscuit, nuttiness, toffee, light coffee, and herbal spiciness. Fair amount of bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, toffee, light coffee, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance malt and bitterness; quite robust and no cloying flavors at all. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy and very smooth mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with pretty much no warming noticed at all after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice porter. Robust, balanced, and very drinkable. I really enjoyed this one, I don’t know what the other reviewers are drinking.

Undated 12 oz bottle with some sediment left clinging to the bottom. Poured with a huge, foamy head; so large my way oversized snifter could not initially hold the entire 12 oz bottle. Soon enough, this died down to a denser tan head that produced very good lacing and had a nice feel. The near black body was medium-full, very smooth, but marred by a bit of tongue burn as if the ABV were at least 3X higher.

The aroma is quite nice and true to style, as is the flavor. Both have plenty of dark roasted grains and some dark fruits. The strong finish leaves a robust and lasting aftertaste, with dark roasted malts that have a hint of smoke but virtually no burnt element.

O: well worth trying, but be sure to let this one warm up a bit.

The Pier Cove Porter was brought by my Bro-in_law for the 4th of July gathering! LUV U BRO!!!

The appearance is deep dark opaque amber with ecru head that laces nicely. The smell has earthy tones like peat and smoke with maltiness. The taste starts roasty with a smokiness then finishes like a coffee sort of acidic. The mouthfeel was fine and could be sessioned without issue.

Looking plenty like a porter, this one's a dark brown, not too thick or heavy but with a slight translucence and red hue at the edges. The head is a small, creamy tan cap that drops down spotting with a few patches.
This one's on the dry and roastier side, lots of it in the malty base with some dark barley-like grains and a bit of coffee grounds, though a mild chocolaty note keeps it from being too dry.
Dryness carries to the flavor, as expected, with notes of charcoal, unsweetened baker's chocolate, and coffee grounds. It lends itself to a mild astringency toward the end of each sip. Something eases it off, though, and it ends a little creamier and with a less harsh chalkiness.
It's a porter, yes, but it's still a little too thin, and the crispness in an otherwise smooth beer a little too zestful.

12 oz. bottle.

Slightly murky dark cola brown. Small, wispy, light khaki head. Not much lacing. Nose of roasted malts, light coffee, milk chocolate, and winy, dark fruits.

Toasted, slightly nutty malt bite up front. Becomes roastier, with notes of coffee, peat, and dark chocolate. Espresso bitterness builds into the long, bittersweet finish. Plenty of chocolate and dark fruits provide some sweetness. Medium-bodied, with a nice creamy feel. A nice, solid, very roasty porter.

Notes from summer 2010

Pours pitch black with one finger of quickly dissipating head that leaves no lacing behind.

Smell is of roasted malt with a slight smokiness. Overall, smell is pretty subtle.

Taste is similar to smell, primarily deep roasted malts, with some earthiness and slight smokiness as well. Not great, but okay.

Mouthfeel is medium w a nice carbonation level.

Drinkability is decent. Earthiness doesn't get overwhelming. Not a porter I'll be coming back to, but not bad.

22 oz. Picked up at Internationa Bev in GR.
Sturdy enough brown pour with a frothy finger of light tan head. Foam stuck around the entirety of the beer.

Roast malt, peat, dark chocolate, the usual suspects.

Taste has the roast malt and peat, but there was some strange banana going on, what yeast did they use? Molasses also keeping it a little sweet. Chocolate and roast finish up, but there is the banana lingering also.

Mouthfeel is good medium, not quite creamy with the carbonation. Coats the mouth well, and is not hard to put down really. Other than some off sweet notes and that banana, not bad for my first from this Brewer. I bet this is better on draft.

Poured from 12oz bottles into multiple pint glasses. Thanks to HeatherAnn, Leslie, and the Killer for the assist!

A: Pours a deep black that shows slight lightening only when held to the light. 1 1/2 fingers of sticky and creamy light brown foam plaster themselves to the inside of the glass, making a sticky mess.

S: Aromas of toasted chocolate malt, dark fruit, light coffee, and roasty grains.

T: Exactly as above with even more chocolate. Cocoa, fudge, and milk chocolate.

M: Oatmeal stout-like in its' creaminess. Spicy, coating, and with a touch of cream sweetness.

O: Not sure about the average scores with this one. Supremely enjoyable!

$1.79 for a 12oz bottle @ BevCo. Opens with a very brisk PSssht. Foam all over the place. Way to overcarbonated, gusher. Despite a careful pour, I get 3/4 of a glass of foam. ~4.5 carbs or so. The nose has a touch of that metallic kiwi fruit smell of an infection, otherwise some cocoa and that's about it in the nose. Something is wrong here. Mouthfeel explodes like champagne and is a little tart with a medium body. In spite of the infection, I can taste cocoa, some light molasses, some chocolate malt...the backbone of what could be a good beer. Bitterness is mild with some herbal hops in the finish (willamette?). Letting it sit out until the carbonation has mellowed makes for a drinkable beer. It's not a drain pour, but it will be in a few weeks.

Well, obviously this one has problems. The only other brew I've had from these guys was the Neopolitan milk stout which was OK, but also not infected.

I got a bottle of Pier Cove Porter last week for $1.49 at The Lager Mill. I had a couple of different beers from Saugatuck at The World Expo of Beer in Frankenmuth. All the beers I had from them were pretty impressive but I didn't get to try any of their flagship beers so when I saw a single on the shelf I figured I would give it a try. No visible bottling date. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.

A- The label doesn't look too bad, it's got a cool picture of a boathouse on the bottom half of the label. It poured a very deep dark brown color that was pretty close to being black and it had some nice ruby highlights when held to the light. It had three fingers worth of fluffy tan head that died down to a thick layer that stayed the rest of the time and it left some nice spotty lacing.

S- The aroma starts off with some roasted malts that smell a little sweet. There is a slight chocolate aroma along with a very slight smoked peat smell. There was also a slight metallic aroma that I could have done without. The aroma is a little lighter then I would like.

T- The taste has all the roasted malts that I picked up in the aroma along with a light smokey peat flavors that was very subtle but added a nice complexity to this beer. The yeast in this beer seems a little weird, its adds a really slight fruit tartness to this beer that seemed out of place. The finish was chocolaty and roasty with hardly any bitterness and it had that unnecessary metallic taste at the end that I could have gone without.

M- Smooth and medium bodied, I would have liked it to a be a little thicker, it seemed a little watery to me. The carbonation was a little heavy but wasn't too bad.

Overall I thought this was a pretty average porter that seemed to stick out from all the other porters, but for all the wrong reasons. As far as aroma and taste went, I felt the roast was were it should be, but as a whole the aroma and flavor seemed to be much more subdued then most porters, and the metallic aspect and the weird flavor from the yeast just didn't seem right for this style. It went down smooth but the flaws prevent me from wanting another. I wouldn't buy this beer again when there are so many other good porter readily available to me. I don't think I would recommend this beer to people, the off flavors don't represent the style that well. I was really impressed with Saugatuck's more daring beers but so far their year round offerings have been disappointing, but I am still willing to try some more from this brewery. This beer would need a lot of work to be able to hang with the better porters.

22oz bomber from Tiffany's in Kalamazoo. I figured I'd take a shot on a $5.99 bomber from a brewery I've never trued. Bad idea, no clue if this was old stock, but it something must be amiss here.

Pour made a nice 2 finger head that dissipated into a nice white ring over the black body.

Smell is caramel, chocolate, and some bitterness.

Taste is where this takes a dive. There's a decent chocolate malt porter at first but a tart acrid taste takes over. Not an infection as much as just a disgusting mesh flavors. Not good.

Mouthfeel is too prickly carbed and very light. Not good.

Drinkability is sub-par. I'm struggling here just to drink enough to properly rate this.

Didn't have high hopes, but this didn't live up to even the experience I wanted - just to try a new beer from a new brewery. The rest of the bomber is going down the drain.
