Enjoyed from the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This nice milk stout pours a muddy blackish brown with a nice head of light brown foam that subsides to a thick ring, thin layer, and nice lacing. Nose of strawberry syrup, milk chocolate, and vanilla....yup....neapolitan. Flavors follow the nose with strawberry and slight vanilla on all sides, chocolate fades in with deep roasted notes and finishes with a roasted cocoa malt note. Smooth and lightly creamy mouth feel with light carbonation. An interesting twist on a milk stout.

Hey, at least ya' can't say it's "rather singular"---it definitely has all three flavors present. The strawberry tastes on the artificial side. Other than that decent.

Poured out of a 12 oz bottle into one of my pint glasses, this beer pours a solid, very dark brown color that has zero interest in letting in any light at all. has a very tan/light brown head that is about 2/3 of an inch thick when first poured that settles to a solid 1/4 inch with good retention and pretty nice lacing. Aromas of strawberry, vanilla, and roasted chocolate are all present here on the nose. Flavors of big roasted chocolate and caramel malt sweetness are present followed by the aforementioned strawberry and vanilla, which seem to occur simultaneously and linger on the back end of the tongue. The roasted chocolate and caramel sweet notes are much more present on the front end of the tongue. Has a slight hop presence too. Also has a crisp, slightly prickly, also smooth and lactic like, medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Has a clean finish. Quite nice and easy to drink. An interesting take on this style that is certainly worth a try.

This is pretty amazing. A really great nitro beer. Very smooth. Truly reminiscent of neopolitan ice cream. Tastes like chocolate vanillaand strawberry. Slightly dry finish. I'm surprised at how the strawberry comes through. Sign me up for more strawberry stouts. A great idea and well executed.

12 ounce bottle, packaged on 09/29/15. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with a couple inch tan head that stayed around for a long time. There's a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like Neapolitan ice cream. Chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry are all noticeable, along with some roasted malt and nuttiness. The flavor is just like the aroma. I do have to say that at first the strawberry wasn't very strong until the beer warmed up and sat around a little while, so you probably shouldn't drink this one cold at all. It just got better and better the longer I drank it! Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's coating and creamy with moderate carbonation. I liked this a lot, glad I bought a 4-pack of it!

A. Dark, dark, but not completely black. Sort of thin.

S. Domestic yeast and roasted malts.

T. Dark malts, creamed coffee, and a little hop bitterness.

M. This really takes a great turn here. Very silky and full body.

O. The feel is way more silky than the appearance. A good milk stout.

12 fl oz bottle sealed with pressure cap.

poured into HF wine stem.

bottled on 08/19/2015

Appearance: light black bodied beer with 2 finger tall off white colored head. Good staying power on the head eventually dropping down to no head and a thin ring. Spotty lacing on the side of the glass as well. A gentle swirl brings back a thick cap of head.

Smell: lightly roasty stout aroma. Vanilla and chocolate are very evident adjuncts in the aroma. Also smelling a nutty aroma almost like peanut butter. Not much of a hint of strawberry in the nose.

Taste: Light bitterness and roasted and nutty malt profile balanced with light sweetness; this stout is not overtly sweet. Light chocolate flavor and light vanilla is present as well. I do actually taste a hint of strawberry in the flavor and you do not have to look hard to find it. All adjunct are present and all well balanced and integrated into the stout. Strawberry comes out even more as the beer warms up and you also start to taste the lactose as well.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with low yet adequate carbonation. Very drinkable stout; drinks true to the 6% ABV. Not boozey at all.

Overall: A nicely balanced stout. One consideration that I have is that the adjuncts may have faded a bit since this was bottled back in august. I would like to see another version of this that is really over the top sweet with big aroma and flavor from the adjuncts. That would be very interesting to try. I would still consider picking up a 4 pack of this on a year basis.

12oz bottle, no date. Pours brown with a medium sized tan head. Smells strongly of artificial strawberry with some vanilla. The taste is pretty standard with roasted malt, but has added flavors of strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, and caramel. Medium body and medium carbonation. Somewhat creamy, but not as much as other milk stouts. Overall, this was better than I expected. It might be weird to try in a blind taste test though since you wouldn't know it's based on Neapolitan ice cream.

Neapolitan Milk Stout.

Saw this for the first time today at my local craft shop and thought it sounded different enough to warrant a purchase. Usually not the biggest fan of milk stouts, but they do have a large variance in terms of what exactly can be done with it. Enough philosophy, let's drink.

Look - From a twelve ounce bottle into a pint glass. Poura a nearly pitch black with a finger and a half off khaki colored head that sticks around for about a minute or so before going away into a thick cloud formation around the top of what appears to be fresh motor oil. Carbonation is virtually impossible to read due to the depth of the coloration.

Smell - Well I'll be fucked. The Neapolitan aspect is certainly the dominating factor on tge nose. Strawberry makes itself most noticable with chocolate and vanilla on the back ends. It smells exactly as the lable would lead you to believe. Cannot wait to dive into this one.

Taste - More of the typical stout flavors come out in the taste. The chocolate at first is different than an ice cream bar and is more Crunch bar esque, BUT the ice cream sandwich characteristics do come through mid palate once again headed by the strawberry, lending the way to chocolate and slight amounts of vanilla upon swallow. Alcohol is oddly noticable despite the low amounts present in the beer.

Feel - Body is very full and substantialy creamy despite the fact the head is completely gone at this point. Lactoae becomes more noticable as the beer sits and drinking it cold gives off the whole ice cream sandwich vibe ever more. Carbonation is pretty high and if you've enjoyed the beer so far it gives you the illusion of melting ice cream in your mouth.

Overall - This is a stout you should drink cold to really feel the nostalgia of being a kid on a hot summer day, minus the creepy ice cream man who turned out to be on a sex offenders list. The taste doesn't quite live up to the nose, but it is still a beer I think everybody should definitely try. Would also make a good beer for your girlfriend/wife/fiance/your mom. Banged 'em all so I would know..ya know. Anyway, very solid stout, and probably my favorite milk/sweet stout to date. Don't give a shit if the old timers consider this one a gimmick, as it was a gimmick well played and precisely executed.

Pours BLAQ with a frothy cream head that leaves only a thin lacing. Smells of Neopolitan ice cream (got figure right). Taste is mostly chocolate with underbite of Strawberry and ever so subtle of Vanilla. Has a heavy feel about it though light on carbonation.Over all A D*MN fine brew indeed! not one for the masses that only enjoy hops! But he whom ist worthy of the like ...

12 oz. bottle poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

Appearance: pours near black with a huge light brown head. Head takes up more than half the glass with just a slightly aggressive pour.

Smell: at first I get mostly chocolate malt, but as I continue to inhale it smells exactly like a neopolitan. Somewhat unnervingly, actually - it doesn't really smell like a stout with chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla added, it smells like ice cream. Still, I like ice cream so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for now.

Taste: keeps that weird neopolitan is-this-actually-beer thing going...it's not working as much for me as in the aroma. It tastes more like one of those neopolitan flavored hard candies than a stout... Flavors are pretty artificial.

Mouhfeel: body is very thin for a stout, yet it's fairly highly carbonated - not the best combination for a stout, but at least it stops me from confusing this for a milkshake.

Overall: picked this up because I was curious...ultimately I would have liked it more if it tasted like a stout with strawberries, chocolate, and vanilla added instead of the neopolitan version of mikes hard lemonade. Maybe that isn't a fair comparison, but hey, that's what I'm tasting.

Very smooth beer, but all the extra flavors (vanilla, raspberry) taste very artificial. Leaves a bad aftertaste so while the smoothness is fun, the rest makes me want to pass.

The strawberry and vanilla tastes definitely come through. The chocolate gets lost, however you pick up hints of it at the end. Nice beer, though. I'd drink it again.

On-tap at Three Cellars, Franklin, WI:

Pours pitch black with a thin, lasting head that leaves lacing.

It smells like a Neapolitan ice cream - chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. It is strong on the chocolate.

It tastes similar to a Neapolitan ice cream - chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. A rich, slightly roasty, stout character comes through adding to the chocolate character. Sweet- leaning, but enough (lactose?) to keep it from being too sweet.

It has a rich body with something of a velvety texture.

An interesting novelty beer - It is similar to a Neapolitan ice cream. And there is a solid milk stout character as support.

Pretty much just black, showing only faintly brown highlights at the edge. Basically nails the Neapolitan notes on the nose, with strawberry ice cream standing out over an inseparable vanilla-chocolate undercurrent that evokes Irish cream. It doesn't really smell like actual strawberries, vanilla, or chocolate though--it smells like ice cream. Aromatic coffee and subtle licorice notes from the roasted malts underscore the dominant aromas.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, there's a weird side to this beer. Somehow it's easy to overlook, but when you first pour this beer, you can smell black olives if you're thinking about it, and you can miss it just as easily. It seems to disappear as the beer warms though. Strange.

Sweet!--which is, I guess, appropriate--with a smooth texture. The flavor has all the same elements as the smell, but less balanced, dominated by a distorted strawberry character.

An interesting gimmick beer, but nothing to seek out. Not likely to buy again.

L - Pours black with tan head, one finger. Quickly fades after aggressive pour.

S - Smells like ice cream initially. Sort of Synthetic smell, flavorings. Roasted chocolate with minor sweet hints of vanilla or strawberry.

T - Chocolate and roasted malt dominant. Hardly any taste of strawberry when cold. Minimum vanilla, smoke notes apparent.

M - Mouthfeel is on par. In the middle of thin vs thick. Medium carbonation, medium mouthfeel overall. I think this was good for this style.

Overall its a good brew. It is however a specialty. Does taste slightly artificial, same as smell and it is pretty apparent. Would drink again. But would share.

Share it.

12oz bottle poured into a Le Coq Imperial Extra Double Stout tulip glass.

The beer pours a deep jet black color, thick, viscous and opaque with a billowy two fingers of light khaki head that has nice retention and leaves huge swatches of lace. The aroma is very unique, neapolitan is the perfect description, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, a touch of roasted grain and raspberry jam, but this is quite interesting, very sweet and definitely has a lactose type aroma that really evokes the sensation of ice cream. The flavors mirror the nose, strawberry at first, a touch sugary and artificial but mildly jammy, long sweeping sensations of milk chocolate, light vanilla bean, rich malted grain with a tinge of roast and chalkiness. The mouthfeel is decent, a bit thin and carbonated, coats moderately well, creamy texture, very smooth and soft finish that is lightly dry.

Verdict: Quite the interesting beer, definitely a unique and spot on interpretation of Neapolitan ice cream. It's a bit sweet for me and the oddly roasted quality at the finish doesn't seem to fit, though it helps to balance the beer at least. Lovers of a dessert stout will find this right to their liking.

Pours dark black with nice head retention. Smells of roasted malt aromas with hints of milk. Taste is complex. Starts out sweet and smooth, then the taste of roasted malts and bitterness in the back of the throat. Overall a pretty good milk stout. Recommended for a try.

Pours an over-saturated dark brown with a short-lived, dark tan head, more fizzy than foamy. No lace is left behind at all.
Smell is chocolate, vanilla, toasted malts, a little wet cardboard. Decently balanced.
Taste is Tootsie Roll(chocolate & vanilla) and toasted malts with a faint cardboard note. Aftertaste has more of the malt, less of the chocolate & vanilla. Still decently sweet and well balanced.
Medium bodied with a lighter effervescence. Come off as more of a porter but that's picking nits, really. Good stuff.

355ml bottle poured into a tulip glass

Look: Opaque black pour with a centimetre or so of bubbly tan head which recedes to a thin foam cap fairly quickly. No lacing to speak of.

Smell: Think ice-cream, in particular Neapolitan ice cream. You get hit with chocolate, vanilla, strawberries and malts almost as soon as the cap is off the bottle. This sounds like the sort of aroma profile that shouldn't work, but by golly it does.

Taste: Oh dear $DEITY - coffee, chocolate, vanilla, fruit. You name it, it has it - a veritable taste explosion but in a good way. There's the teeniest hint of alcohol in the aftertaste but that doesn't detract from the fact that this tastes amazing.

Feel: Kind of anaemic compared to some stouts, but the flavour makes up for it - feels full bodied, even with relatively little carbonation. Fairly light ABV-wise too, so drinkable with it.

Overall: If it were feasible to have my blood replaced with this then I probably would - it's absolutely amazing. Sadly, it was a 'chance' inclusion in a mixed case of American beers that I bought recently, and the folks that I got this from don't list any Saugatuck ales at all, which is a pity. I suspect that this is going to take some hunting down, but given the chance I'll have it again.

Bottle dated 9/30/14:
Pours quite dark, with an ok head, which fades to minimal rim lacing. There is a hint of lacing here and there. The nose is a bit chocolately, with a hint of fruitiness, berry in nature. I get some smokiness when its (too) cold. My GF says she loves the smell, so maybe I'm missing something tonight.

The taste starts with a bit chocolate, and is very smooth from the get go. The berry (I get raspberry more than strawberry) comes through next, adding a tartness to the taste. This taste never takes over the beer, but comes close. If I search, I can sense some vanilla as the berry flavor fades, but more I like the smooth feel at that point. The "smokey" notes I get in the smell might be the bitter tastes I get in the end, which are a bit green wood in nature.

Overall, the more the beer warms, the more I enjoy it, and the feel becomes silkier. An interesting beer you should definitely try once for yourself (warm).

I like this beer and it does smell and taste like Neapolitan ice cream, but artificial flavor and color added? Really? I guess the ice cream is probably artificially flavored also, but this is supposed to be craft beer and this just feels like a shortcut. Scores would be way higher if they could make this naturally.

Picked up another bottle for a review from Vintage Estate. $2.99 retail

A - Good looking stout very dark with a 1/2 inch of mocha head.
S - AGAIN best part of this novelty beer is the smell like straight up Strawberry/Vanilla ice cream.
T - Guess its achieved by additives since the taste is mostly stout with an artificial berry flavor. Still sweet and tasty.
M - Medium bodied and chewy it does drink like a full stout.

Overall I grabbed two of these since I remember how I loved it but my review is taken back again since most revisits tend to be lacking. Still it's a gimmicky different milk stout worth trying!
