I'm not sure about the strawberry flavor ... kind of bizarre. I don't think I like it and it sort of ruins the overall experience. Put down for a few minutes to enjoy dinner ... a sip after dinner was quite disgusting ... had to pour the rest down the drain.

This is one of those delicious beers that you immediately realize is going to be an all-timer and then, as you drink it, you come to understand it's actually a little too much flavour to handle. It feels like drinking a dessert. Fun for a while, but maybe it gets to be too much as you come to the end of a pint.

I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. With the vintage packaging, the beer's flavors gave way to smooth, creamy notes of vanilla, strawberry and milk chocolate, reminiscent of the little plastic cups with wooden spoons of neapolitan ice cream from the 80s. A tasty beer with great balance and subtle but delicious ice cream flavors that would make a great dessert beer. Definitely one to try!

Looks great in the teku glass. Pitch black body, 1 finger tan head. Smells pretty good, vanilla up front, strong strawberries overwhelming afterward, slight rubbing alcohol presence. Taste, chocolate from the git go. Then again some strong strawberry, a bit of vanilla, a strong malt presence in the taste. Overall, nice adjunct stout without barrel aging here. Pick up again sometime, NYD. Wife likes it too.

I bought this one not expecting much, and man was I fooled. Nice, creamy pour with a decent tan head. Smell is amazing - chocolate, vanilla, a bit of toasted malt, coffee and the smell of sweet strawberries. Taste is very much the same, with a dessert-like toasty decadence, and the strawberry flavor is fresh - not artificial tasting by any means. Earthy, mineral qualities on the back end. A very solid brew. Seeking out more by saugatuck if I see them.

Saugatuck Brewing Company - Neapolitan Milk Stout. 6% ABV. 12oz bottle split between two snifters. Packaged on 12/31/15.

Look: Settled pitch black, with dark brown highlights. Small off white head lasts shortly, before lapsing into lacing.

Smell: Dehydrated strawberry, sweet chocolate, vanilla, and sweet cream. Mostly artificial aromas.

Feel: Medium bodied, with a heavy amount of carbonation.

Taste: Dehydrated strawberry up front, and most prominent, followed by some sweet chocolate, vanilla, and sweet cream. A tiny bit bitter, but leaves a sweet aftertaste.

Overall: My local beer store just got this in, and I decided to get a bottle to try. Not bad aroma or taste, but easily identify able as being mostly artificial. Good dessert beer, but too sweet to drink more that one.

Medium brown pour and actually very dark in the glass. Black in appearance with only faint highlights of brown when held to light. A thin, khaki lacing rests on top. The nose, while artificial, does smell like Neopolitan icecream (vanilla extract, strawberry, lactose). There's also a strange, synthetic vegetal aroma to this beer..not sure what I'm picking up there, but it doesn't mesh well. Decent taste, actually. Vanilla extract, cream, lactose, dehydrated strawberries, and caramel malt. Relatively artificial tasting, but better than I would've thought. Decent feel on this one. Thicker than a lot of milk stouts, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Overall, not bad. Not as good as it could've been, but far from bad.

I want to preface this review by saying that am usually really underwhelmed by milk stouts with ABVs below 7-8%, as I usually find the flavors to be rather muted and too subtle for on thmy taste. This beer, however, is quite the exception. Intensely sweet, this beer still manages to avoid being cloyingly sweet, and with a distinct strawberry flavor that is well balanced with that of vanilla and chocolate, it is a dessert beer for the ages. This is most definitely my new favorite dessert beer, on-par with Southern Tier's Choklat and others of the like.

Pours a dark brown almost black colour with a quickly dissipating thin tan head. The nose leads with dark chocolate roasted malts, vanilla, coffee, and strawberry. The taste follows much of the same attributes with the strawberry almost tasting syrupy in the edges of the flavour. Kind of like the strawberry filling of a doughnut. The carbonation is a bit prickly but does cut the mouthfeel down a bit to a high medium. I tend to like Milk and Sweet stouts but find the cloyingly syrup feel of the strawberry a bit distracting. Not enough to call this a bad beer but enough to make me hesitate and say "well that's a bit different".

A lot going on in this beer. You totally get the whole realm of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry of neapolitan ice cream. As a one off, standalone dessert, it would be okay, I guess. Certainly not a session or good food accompaniment.

With flavorings, additives and extracts being all the rage, we are able to make foodstuff taste like any other foodstuff. And it seems that brewers are particularly susceptible to the trend. The trick is to find the right combination of what's beer and what's the thing that we want the beer to taste like.

For the Saugatuck brewers its their Neapolitan Milk Stout that already boasts the dark chocolate and cream from an English-style stout austere and with careful layering of strawberry and vanilla to complete the dessert-like whimsy. It's dark brown hue and fragile froth hardly holds any of those secrets, but with a pass of the nose the surprising wafts of strawberry and vanilla join the fray.

Its taste leads with coffee, baker's chocolate and burnt breads- all given of the the stout. But the coffee and chocolate begin to soften as the vanilla and cream gives the taste something more akin to cappuccino and milk chocolate. Rising strawberry flavors complete the show and sell the classic ice cream flavor spread with strong conviction. But a finish of aspartame bittersweet bite leaves the lasting taste tepidly unsettled.

Full and lush on the palate, the beer isn't as sweet as the palate wants to believe. Its malty-dry finish promotes a good sense of drinkability but also pulls back the curtain and allows for the waxy taste and texture of chap-stick to reveal itself. Bitter, and leaving an arid taste of ice cream on the finish is both curious, alluring but slightly suspect.

Tastey milk stout, but really sweet. Smells and tastes like an ice-cream parlor. I can see some loving it as a result and others finding it to be too sweet. The sweetness did in fact throw me a bit upon the first sip,,but then I settled in afterwards. Think it tastes better once it warms up. Would love to try the BA version

This beer smells wonderful, just as the name implies its like a Neapolitan ice cream stout. All three flavors very prevalent in the aroma with the strawberry smelling the best to me. The taste leaves a lot to be desired. Some artificial vanilla flavor and an odd chocolate. The strawberry is no where to be found. I did this side by side with the BA version, and that version is much better.

A: Nice head.
S: A confectionery-like strawberry smell.
T: It's like a smokey stout with a quite agreeable strawberry milkshake flavour. It's slightly sweet and very earthy indeed. Quite bitter actually. Just a bit metallic.
O: A very interesting combination. A sound stout, if not a bit girly.

Well, a lot of people seem to like this one so I was hopeful. However, I found the flavours in the beer to be unbearably artificial. There was the familiar ashy flavour of a stout mixed with sickly artificial flavour.

Enjoyed from the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This nice milk stout pours a muddy blackish brown with a nice head of light brown foam that subsides to a thick ring, thin layer, and nice lacing. Nose of strawberry syrup, milk chocolate, and vanilla....yup....neapolitan. Flavors follow the nose with strawberry and slight vanilla on all sides, chocolate fades in with deep roasted notes and finishes with a roasted cocoa malt note. Smooth and lightly creamy mouth feel with light carbonation. An interesting twist on a milk stout.

Hey, at least ya' can't say it's "rather singular"---it definitely has all three flavors present. The strawberry tastes on the artificial side. Other than that decent.

Cheers

Poured out of a 12 oz bottle into one of my pint glasses, this beer pours a solid, very dark brown color that has zero interest in letting in any light at all. has a very tan/light brown head that is about 2/3 of an inch thick when first poured that settles to a solid 1/4 inch with good retention and pretty nice lacing. Aromas of strawberry, vanilla, and roasted chocolate are all present here on the nose. Flavors of big roasted chocolate and caramel malt sweetness are present followed by the aforementioned strawberry and vanilla, which seem to occur simultaneously and linger on the back end of the tongue. The roasted chocolate and caramel sweet notes are much more present on the front end of the tongue. Has a slight hop presence too. Also has a crisp, slightly prickly, also smooth and lactic like, medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Has a clean finish. Quite nice and easy to drink. An interesting take on this style that is certainly worth a try.

This is pretty amazing. A really great nitro beer. Very smooth. Truly reminiscent of neopolitan ice cream. Tastes like chocolate vanillaand strawberry. Slightly dry finish. I'm surprised at how the strawberry comes through. Sign me up for more strawberry stouts. A great idea and well executed.

12 ounce bottle, packaged on 09/29/15. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with a couple inch tan head that stayed around for a long time. There's a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like Neapolitan ice cream. Chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry are all noticeable, along with some roasted malt and nuttiness. The flavor is just like the aroma. I do have to say that at first the strawberry wasn't very strong until the beer warmed up and sat around a little while, so you probably shouldn't drink this one cold at all. It just got better and better the longer I drank it! Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's coating and creamy with moderate carbonation. I liked this a lot, glad I bought a 4-pack of it!

A. Dark, dark, but not completely black. Sort of thin.

S. Domestic yeast and roasted malts.

T. Dark malts, creamed coffee, and a little hop bitterness.

M. This really takes a great turn here. Very silky and full body.

O. The feel is way more silky than the appearance. A good milk stout.

12 fl oz bottle sealed with pressure cap.

poured into HF wine stem.

bottled on 08/19/2015

Appearance: light black bodied beer with 2 finger tall off white colored head. Good staying power on the head eventually dropping down to no head and a thin ring. Spotty lacing on the side of the glass as well. A gentle swirl brings back a thick cap of head.

Smell: lightly roasty stout aroma. Vanilla and chocolate are very evident adjuncts in the aroma. Also smelling a nutty aroma almost like peanut butter. Not much of a hint of strawberry in the nose.

Taste: Light bitterness and roasted and nutty malt profile balanced with light sweetness; this stout is not overtly sweet. Light chocolate flavor and light vanilla is present as well. I do actually taste a hint of strawberry in the flavor and you do not have to look hard to find it. All adjunct are present and all well balanced and integrated into the stout. Strawberry comes out even more as the beer warms up and you also start to taste the lactose as well.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with low yet adequate carbonation. Very drinkable stout; drinks true to the 6% ABV. Not boozey at all.

Overall: A nicely balanced stout. One consideration that I have is that the adjuncts may have faded a bit since this was bottled back in august. I would like to see another version of this that is really over the top sweet with big aroma and flavor from the adjuncts. That would be very interesting to try. I would still consider picking up a 4 pack of this on a year basis.

12oz bottle, no date. Pours brown with a medium sized khaki head. Smells strongly of strawberry and vanilla with some roasted malt and cocoa. The taste is pretty standard with more roasted malt, but has added flavors of strawberry, cocoa, vanilla, and lactose. Below average body and medium carbonation. Somewhat creamy, but not as much as other milk stouts. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this beer and it reminded me of the ice cream.

Neapolitan Milk Stout.

Saw this for the first time today at my local craft shop and thought it sounded different enough to warrant a purchase. Usually not the biggest fan of milk stouts, but they do have a large variance in terms of what exactly can be done with it. Enough philosophy, let's drink.

Look - From a twelve ounce bottle into a pint glass. Poura a nearly pitch black with a finger and a half off khaki colored head that sticks around for about a minute or so before going away into a thick cloud formation around the top of what appears to be fresh motor oil. Carbonation is virtually impossible to read due to the depth of the coloration.

Smell - Well I'll be fucked. The Neapolitan aspect is certainly the dominating factor on tge nose. Strawberry makes itself most noticable with chocolate and vanilla on the back ends. It smells exactly as the lable would lead you to believe. Cannot wait to dive into this one.

Taste - More of the typical stout flavors come out in the taste. The chocolate at first is different than an ice cream bar and is more Crunch bar esque, BUT the ice cream sandwich characteristics do come through mid palate once again headed by the strawberry, lending the way to chocolate and slight amounts of vanilla upon swallow. Alcohol is oddly noticable despite the low amounts present in the beer.

Feel - Body is very full and substantialy creamy despite the fact the head is completely gone at this point. Lactoae becomes more noticable as the beer sits and drinking it cold gives off the whole ice cream sandwich vibe ever more. Carbonation is pretty high and if you've enjoyed the beer so far it gives you the illusion of melting ice cream in your mouth.

Overall - This is a stout you should drink cold to really feel the nostalgia of being a kid on a hot summer day, minus the creepy ice cream man who turned out to be on a sex offenders list. The taste doesn't quite live up to the nose, but it is still a beer I think everybody should definitely try. Would also make a good beer for your girlfriend/wife/fiance/your mom. Banged 'em all so I would know..ya know. Anyway, very solid stout, and probably my favorite milk/sweet stout to date. Don't give a shit if the old timers consider this one a gimmick, as it was a gimmick well played and precisely executed.
