Black in color with brownie mix highlights at the bottom of my Goose Island Pint glass. Light bronw head of about one finger, but a hlf finger of foam that lasts for all twelve ounces. Pretty good lacing too.

The aroma has bakers chocolate mixing with some coffee grounds, caramel, and I even get a strawberry in there too. This is a pretty good smelling brew.

Flavor starts with a light strawberry, fruity flavor. This is taken over by dark chocolate, breakfast blend coffee, a little vanilla creamer that cuts the strength of the chocolate, and some caramel. This beer taste pretty unique to me. I like to think this brewery set out with a goal of trying to brew a beer that tastes like Neapolitan, and they did a pretty good job.

The only downside to this beer I see is a thin palate, the palate is watered down oil in my opinion. Not bad by any means, I just wish it had more body.

Tried a draft sample to see if it lived up to the horrible bottles I had last month. The aroma was similarly of fake strawberry syrup, but the roastiness of the stout did come through a little bit more behind it. Flavors were similarly sweet and artificial at first, but in the end the base stout came forward quite a bit more flavor-wise also. Overall it was actually far better that the bottles... just going to chalk it up to inconsistency, or poor treatment of the first bottled batch that arrived in Chicago.

12-17-2012 Bottle: 2.45

Poured a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass. Dark brown when poured and black in the glass. Huge billowing head of tan foam that rises above the rim in a convex dome, leaving sheets of sticky lacing behind. Great head retention, long lasting and the surface skim never breaks. So far so good.

Aromas of artificial strawberry cough syrup and vanilla extract. Very medicinal and fake... not to mention the bad childhood memories of taking cough syrup it conjures up. Yuck.

Flavor also has a similar artificial, medicinal strawberry note to it, though the base stout seems good enough. Mildly roasty with a medium level of sweetness, slightly dry and bitter finish. Medicinal note lingers throughout unfortunately, marring an otherwise decent base stout. Just plain weird. Not sure why they released this, it struck me as odd right off the bat. This is a brand new arrival to the market too, doubt it would already be infected.

12 oz bottle into a glass mug

A: Pours seriously black. No light through this beer. Unfortunately, that is due to added caramel color. No matter though. A small, dark brown head forms on top and quickly fades to a foam ring.

S: Dark roasted malt with hints of chocolate syrup and vanilla.

T: Immediately get chocolate covered cherries, (although I think they were going for strawberry) but in an artificial way. More like it's chocolate syrup and cherry/strawberry syrup from a squeeze bottle. Then a little bit of roasted malt with subtle notes of vanilla extract in there. Lingering chocolate fruit finish. Actually not a lot of sweetness.

M: Fairly helft body with carbonation being on the low side. A little bit of oily slickness that briefly leaves the mouth coated.

O: I like the idea behind this beer, but I really wish they didn't have to use artificial flavoring and coloring to make it a reality. Still, it is fairly enjoyable. Makes me think I might actually like a real cherry stout.

Thanks to MDunk for sharing this one! Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark brown, mostly opaque, with a one-finger medium brown head. No real visible carbonation.

S: Coffee with some chocolate, vanilla, toffee, and maybe some cinnamon?

T: Reminds me of cold black bitter coffee, with some vanilla, cacao, and a vague sweet fruitiness (cherry I thought, but could be persuaded it was strawberry). Hang was similar to slightly burnt black coffee bitterness.

M: Medium to slightly thin mouthfeel. Some carbonation sensation but not much, alcohol noticeable but doesn't detract.

O: This was a pretty good take on a milk stout - not usually my favorite style. To me the coffee flavors were so forward they tended to overpower any of the "Neapolitan" that the brewer was looking for. Overall a decent beer.

Bottle to Bruery snifter.

A - Very dark brown on the pour and black once it settled. A small layer of light brown head formed and receded to a ring around the glass. Spotty lacing.

S - Chocolate, strawberry and vanilla are all here, true to the label. Fairly sweet overall. The Neapolitan aromas are somewhat artificial but still appealing.

T - Sweet strawberry puree, milk chocolate and a hint of vanilla compliment a nice roasted malt profile. Fairly sweet overall with a slight bitterness in the finish.

M - Medium body with some chew. Moderate carbonation.
