Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

I always bet double black. I also never feel lucky. I think it's a coincidence. Anyway, this stuff pours a deep black-sienna topped by a finger of tan foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, pine resin, dark chocolate, and a lingering sense of grapefruit rind. The taste brings in more of the same, with the grapefruit morphing into a sweet version of orange zest stretching out into a strong vein of counterpoint to the dry dark chocolate and relatively mild roasted malts. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a pretty smooth feel. Overall, a very nice black IPA, one that balances its usually conflicting halves rather well. Good times.

Pours a very dark blackish brown, with some amber showing in the light. Cant see thru a oversized wine glass.

Some kind of slight citrus and slight malt aromas.

A definite citris hop flavor with some lingering black hops and hints of chocolate coffee.

I found it very light with a medium carbonation, with the hops hanging around for a spell

Even with the smell not being to complex, the flavor was quite good . I liked this beer and picked up a few more for those days I don't want to open a more expensive bottle lol.

LOOK: Pours a deep brown color, off white mocha cream head has excellent retention and lasts the duration of the drinking experience. Plenty of lace rings are left behind, which stands as a testament to the employment of many hops.

SMELL: Heaps of grapefruit, roasted notes try to hang on but are quickly overcome by a strong hoppy scent that is primary in the aroma. Earth, sweet malt hops and alcohol.

TASTE: Much more roasted flavor than is present in the nose, and that's not to say that this isn't hoppy, because there is a substantial amount of hops. Kudos goes out to the brewer for keeping all the elements in check here. Pine, resin and grapefruit compete with dark chocolate, coffee and black malts. The bottle claims double hopped, so is basically dry hopped. It is quite delicious. Alcohol very mild in the flavor. This is quite tasty.

FEEL: A big beer all around, Double Black is full bodied, smooth, rich and velvety. Carbonation is spot on at a high medium.

OVERALL: A fine black IPA , though not pale as the term IPA would suggest. Tastes hoppy enough. This reminds me of an export stout or perhaps even a Russian Imperial.

Appearance: Black body with one finger light tan head.

Aroma: Nonspecific hop bitterness. Somewhere between piney, earthy, and citrusy. Not getting much from the malt.

Taste: I've only had a handful of American Black Ales but from my experience they tend to be pretty close in flavor to Black IPAs. Double Black is definitely it's own style. The charred malt and dark malt bitterness I was expecting is almost completely absent from the taste. Instead there is a smooth dark syrupy malt flavor that coasts along below the slightly bitter (50 IBU?) hop blend. For a double hopped ale I thought there would be much more hop flavor but it really doesn't lend much more than bitterness to the palate. Perhaps a bit of earth and citrus but that's about it. 8.2% ABV seems like a misprint because it is completely undetectable in the flavor. However, there is a slight warming in the throat after each sip which adds a nice element to the enjoyment. FInish is smooth. Aftertaste of moderate bitterness and dark malt.

Mouthfeel: Just below medium in body with average carbonation and easy drinkability.

Final Thoughts: If I was drinking this blind I'd think it was some sort of session Black IPA because the flavor lacks the depth of an 8.2% ABV ale. Still, it's nice to get to try a one time release no matter what the outcome. Would I drink it again? No.
