Fiery amber orange body. Fluffy off white head. Lacing is quite bountiful. This one smells vaguely similar to Santa's Private Reserve. Nice bouquet of hop flower and hop oil blended in with a caramel like maltiness. Sturdy malt base of caramel and toffee. Hops are forward in their presence. Piney and oily in nature. There's a nice biting bitterness that lets you know this is indeed an "India Style" Red Ale. For this style of beer, the malt/hop balance is really quite good. The body is easy going and agreeable. Lightly carbonated mouthfeel. Quite a good ale.

nice audible pop from the cap, can't recall when I put this in the cellar, no date on the bottle

eyes...
good full finger of white head, the head looks like the flash game bubble tank, head retention is nice even sitting for a few, lacing is par, nice and clean amber hue with some carbonation populating the beer regions, a good looking if not mostly average offering in the looks department

nose...
hoppy caramel and lots of cinnamon, the hops stink more of earthy dirt than piney notes, sort of herbal and almost medicinal (like cough syrup), and that's pretty much it....

taste etc...
coats the tongue with malty flavors, toasted caramel with that hint of medicinal notes, the hops taste just like the aroma, you get sort of a weird dark honey type of vibe, the carbonation seems to be a little lacking, a little more would really get this going... this dances in the medium mouthfeel vein and weight wise seems about right. when I pour a fresh dollop into the glass and then sip things come together much nicer than after this has sat for more than a minute, the bitterness is coming about a bit now, residing on the middle side quadrants of my tongue, some definite warming is going on.. so no one still knows the ABV of this ?

verdict?
a good enough beer, nice flavor, probably good with a meal to cut through something spicy but not crazeee spicy, maybe even nice with something acidic like balsamic anything...

A beer from Rogue's what, sister brewery? I don't really know but I do know that I Am willing to give anything Rogue a shot. I hope I am not offending anyone at Eugene City with those comments but in time I am sure I will come to see the individual you are.

I am expecting something along the lines of Santa beer, more commonly known as Santa's Private Reserve Ale, a seasonal offering from Rogue that is much a hoppy red.

I will be using my Fin Du Monde glass for the first time since the foot broke off.

With an assertive 'pop' and a wafting of hoppy aroma the beer is freed. I pour and much head perches atop the ale itself; ale a cloudy orange-amber, head miles tall and thick like foam with a hue toward peach from light tan. Dissipation is a time consuming process and leaves much evidence as patches of foam remain behind to bear witness.

This beer smells big, like a bully crouching in the hedge waiting for his lunch money. Malts are proudly evident, slightly sweet and biscuity with a tiny bit of caramel, and hops back-light the malts with a floral intensity that makes everything contrast with hard edges. This beer smells like somebody misread the grain bill, or forgot to convert to Kilograms.

Anticipation of the taste is a bit daunting, I am hoping the balance carries through and allows the ingredients to glow rather than burn... First taste is pleasing, Grains and a bit of sweetness up front with a hop back end that is piny and bitter and welcome. Second taste is the same, round and full and balanced with a lingering hop ferocity that does not disappoint. Aftertastes suggest coffee, a bit odd but good.

Mouthfeel is smooth and full with great fizzyness and a dry finish making for good drinkability

This beer is not Santa beer but is a close cousin, perhaps a bit more body and a sweeter malt backbone but much the same balance and hoppy joy.

Get some!

Slainte.

Snagged this up today at Whole Foods... didn't realize until now that it is a sister Rogue brew.... wonder if it is the same as the St. Rogue Dry-Hopped Red now... but they say they don't just repackage... and the hops smell better than I remember the plain red smelling...

- Cloudy red and caramel malty look... huge fluffy tan head... about 3 fingers deep sticking around....

- Smell it from a distance... nice sweet malt and grain.. and a citrus hop presence... up close it's a thick caramel scent... very grainy, must be loaded with proteins... spicy zesty hop, bready character..

- Is what it says.. tastes great... caramel malt, not too roasty.. nice bitter punch to the tongue... tastes like some old school hops.. Mt. Hood, Willamette maybe... or perhaps a boatload of Cascade.... either way,.,. it's a hoppy one. Loving it. I'm more for a less thick and caramel red... but this is rather bitter, and balanced...

- Medium bodied, sticky sweet... sticky everywhere...

- Overall very tasty.. and very bitter. If you have a bitter tongue... then you will love this brew. Love the hops and flavor... and would love this on tap I am sure.

I think I brought this back from chicago.
No doubt an impulse buy due to an affinity for Rogue's beer line.

Popped open with a champagne like sound. I was sure there would be foam coming out.

Stable foam has been sitting for at least 10 min. daring me to sip.

Cloudy red beer has a hoppy smell, but not overwhelming.

Taste; bitter. Definitely overwhelming. Someone will like this.

Not at all much like a red ale other than in color & name. Tastes like an IPA, hiding a weaker red ale.

Consume as an IPA, carefully. You won't taste much else.

This came in a 1pt bottle with no use by or produce date and no alcohol abv either but must admit have always been a fan of rogues beers on pouring this beer it has a redgum honey colour to it with a little one finger cream coloured head which dissipates quite quickly, the smell is quite unusual i just cant place it exactly but u can definately smell a feint hop smell with a alot of malt in the background and on tasting it has a very different taste almost like lots of malt with passionfruit thrown in and at times a little medcinal, not a bad beer but def not the best effort from rogue.

22oz bottle poured into an imperial (nonic) pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy, dark/burnt copper with a nice 1" off-white head that subsides to about 1/8"

Aroma: Not as hoppy as the taste interestingly enough though hops are still detected. It's got a nice maltiness to it, reminiscent of the barley aromas one encounters while the wort is boiling.

Taste: Hops hops hops. Peppery hops, citrusy hops. Not much maltiness in the forefront although there's a bit more balance in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Bright carbonation. Smooth stuff. A lovely beer all around.

Single 22 oz bottle with no apparent bottling date, purchased 5/17, sampled 5/19. Nice dense khaki head that lingers for some time, capping the copper, honey colored beer. Particulate matter floating here and there and keeping the brew considerably cloudy. I have made an effort to keep the sludge that has settled at 1/4 thick in the bottle, but it doesn't help much. A good looking beer, but I am hesitant about that particulation. Smells like thick, ruddily sweet malts - not far from some barleywines I've laid nostril to. Behind that is fusel alcohol, melon, rye bread. The malt becomes cloying to inhale, but at the same time I don't stop sniffing. Still, it seems this beast has some age on it. Is it past its prime? Difficult to tell, but still worth reviewing in my mind. The show must go on. Taste is clean, crisp biscuity right off the bat - a nice note...the body grows quickly on this, it becomes creamy and sticky and thick as soup as it roars towards my tonsils. While this thickens, it grows bitter. The hop resin holds up on my tongue a little more than I could pick it up in the nose. Grassy oils, clashing with the toasted malt sweetness. As this goes down, I'm picking up bamboo, corn, tomato, all of it slightly bitter and warming in my throat. Its all messy, sometimes cloying with rote maltiness, sometimes too hot... but it has its moments.
Mouthfeel relies heavily on the medium oil-filled body being kept in check by some intense carbonation. It works well unless I let the beer sit in my mouth. At that point it becomes too 'soft' and falls apart in a sticky viscous trip. I'm not 100% sure I'm going to finish the bomber - that tells me drinkability is not there.

This seems a bit syrupy to me. I wish it were slightly more carbonated.

Pours a hazy amber with a small, dense white head. The aroma is slick and malty, not terribly subtle. The flavor is disappointing - syrupy and thick, malty with a little overripe floral hops. The mouthfeel is syrupy and not particularly pleasant.

Just landed in Australia, 650ml bomber.

Deep amber/copper, quite hazy/muddy with short but fine beige head. Huge caramel, toffee, hop (vibrant juicy fruit, cumquat, fanta orange) and alcohol aromas. Very smooth, silky body which seems almost a little flabby towards the finish, which is modest but lingering. Moderate to strong bitterness, which seems in balance with the overall feel of the beer.

Obviously quite fresh, and very enjoyable.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pint glass. 02/07/09.

Pours a hazy copper color with about a finger of beige head. The head slowly dropped to a thin layer, leaving lots of lacing. Aroma is full of caramel malt and piny and herbal hops.

The taste is very malty and slightly sweet, with caramel and light toffee flavors up front. That is followed by piny and herbal hops and a bitter finish. Pretty well balanced, and the hops are not too aggressive, though it is bitter for a red ale. Feel is medium bodied with plenty of carbonation. Crisp with a dry finish. Drinkability is pretty good, though slightly low given the bitterness.

Overall, not bad for an "India style red ale". Nicely hopped, though a bit high on the bitterness.

drank on 1.20.09 at the Lazy Boy Saloon in White Plains NY.

This beer is actually brewed by Rogue, but under a different brewery name. Pours a good amber copper color, huge frothy head with superb lacing to compliment. The head seemed to last forever. Not much aroma, malty base, slight hop smell.

The taste was an average red ale, soft on the mouth. good malty base, big bitter hop taste underneath. medium body. ok beer, good drinkability, nothing over the top exciting.

Reviewed on 10/3/08. On tap at Ginger Man. Pours a brown/amber with a small tan head. Aroma of pine and grassy hops with slight citrusy hops. Flavor of lots of citrus hops and iced tea. Just ok, as the iced tea flavors really dominated here.

22oz. Bomber

Poured into a Rogue Dead Guy glass a very nice hazy dark golden amber color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger creamy off-white head, with some nice sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, with some nice hop notes, citrus, and pines. The taste is hoppy, slightly sweet, nice touch of citrus/pines. Medium body. Drinkable, on the bottle it sez India Style Red Ale, this is a pretty tasty brew, recommended.

22oz bottle purchased as a single from Julio's, Westboro, MA.

Poured into a imperial pint glass, formed a 1 1/2" beige head over the moderately cloudy reddish amber brew. Meringuey head is going nowhere fast, with tons of pleasing lace. Aroma is defined by citrusy hops character. Taste starts with a quick shot of sweet, then gives itself over completely to the lemony bitter hops. Mouthfeel is soft over the tongue, and drinkability is limited slightly by the (over)abundance of hops power.

22oz bottle. Poured a hazy orange-yellow. Smelled very hoppy with citrus notes, surprising for a pale ale. Had an off white head that laced fairly decently. Tasted mainly hoppy, not necessarily bad but not what I was expecting given the label says pale ale, also notes of citrus and pine. Given what I was expecting was a pale ale and ended up drinking what I thought tasted very much like IPA, wasn't really the greatest fan of this beer, but may need to try again.

Had this on-tap at Pizzeria Paradiso in Washington DC.

Pours a very dark cloudy copper color with a rocky two-finger off-white head. The head dissipates very slowly - there's still about a half-finger left when I finished my beer. Lacing is very thick, in fact I'd actually call it sheeting.

Smells good. Lots of sweet malt with some pine and citrus aromas. There's also a slight hint of vanilla.

Tastes good as well. Robust sweet malt flavor sup front followed by good amounts of pine and grapefruit flavors. The pine is a bit heavier while the beer is still cold. There's a nice bitter ending to it all.

Mouthfeel is good. It's the tiniest bit on the thin side as far as thickness is concerned, but it still goes down smoothly.

Drinkability is good. This beer went down very easily - it's one of the better ambers I've had.

Overall this is a very dark and flavorful amber that's definitely worth a shot.

Pours a copper color with a dense two fingers of head that has great retention. Heavy lacing is left on the glass surface. Strong hoppy smell of pine and citrus. This one hoppy red ale. Also a solid toasted malt base. Semi-creamy texture with a medium body. A nice hoppy ale. It is a bit like Santa's Private Reserve but even hoppier.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a mug glass.

A: The beer is a deep reddish amber color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of fruity citrus, piney hops and caramelized malts.

T: The taste is starts with sweet flavors of caramel and citrus that are quickly followed by a strong hops bitterness. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy and there's a good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean and dry.

D: Pretty tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, the side of the label reads "India Style Red Ale" and this beer does well to fit that description. It's a nice beer to drink for long time.
