At the American Tobacco complex, near Tyler’s, but we had a hard time finding it. Huge! But not very “mellow” or hippy-trippy.. where are the giant colorful mushrooms? More of a bland, chain-restaurant setup...

Pizza is always wow at the Mellow, but the beer selection at this location was so poor. Drafts of Mama’s Yella, Red Oak Lager, Fat Tire, Aviator Tripel, Smutty Old Brown, Bell’s Two Hearted, Foothills People Porter, Founders All Day… I’m used to fantastic beer choices at most Mellow joints, with an emphasis on local beer and some high-octane brews. This was a letdown, beer-wise.

Come here for the pizza only.

I've stopped into this location a few times before going to a ballgame or the theater and have been happy each time. The food menu has an interesting selection of pizzas, calzones, and sandwiches that have yet to disappoint (I really like the flavor of their pizza dough), and the fact that the restaurant was built in the old tobacco factory building makes the atmosphere feel a bit older and more comfortable. The last time I was in before a Bulls games, it seemed as if every third person in the place was a Mellow Mushroom employee, and the service was correspondingly quick.

Regarding the beer, both the draft and bottle lists are long but not very diverse, consisting primarily of light lagers, ambers, pale ales, wheat beers, and a few IPAs, all served in shaker pint glasses. But then again, being a pizza joint, it makes sense that there isn't anything too flavorful that would overpower the food. Of those beers, there is a good combination of macros, pseudo-macros (Blue Moon, Widmer), widely-distributed craft (Dogfish Head, Sierra Nevada), local (Red Oak, Highland), and house beers. Overall, it isn't the greatest selection (especially compared to Tyler's Taproom across the plaza), but it is better than most pizza places, making it a nice casual place for dinner before the game or the show.

This MM has a great location in the American Tobacco Exchange complex right by Tyler's and the Durham Bulls. It's great for a pre-game meal.

The decor is much tamer than most MMs but it lets the natural beauty of the building come through. The exposed brick, high ceilings and sheer size of the room make a wonderful dining environment. It houses a mix of tables and booths including a great round booth by the door with a huge mushroom cap over it. There's also outdoor seating out front.

The beer selection is more limited than other MMs but there are some solid options including Bell's Two Hearted Ale, Lagunitas IPA, Sweetwater 420, SNPA, two from Highland, Alagash White and one from Triangle BC. They offer pints and pitchers (though by my calculations, there's no value to the pitcher).

The food is good but not outstanding (although being from the northeast, I may expect more from my pizza than most). The server was a nice kid but had no knowledge of beer. The prices are reasonable.

Like all other MMs I've been to, this MM is fun, offers good beer and is family friendly. It's well worth a visit.

Mellow Mushroom in Durham is located directly across the street from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, in the swanky, recently renovated American Tobacco campus. The atmosphere is casual, as is the service, and the unfinished brick interior and hippy mushroom-humor décor makes the place seem hip enough. There is plenty of dining room seating, along with a number of tables on the patio, and a sizable bar along the back wall.

The food is mostly pizza and sandwiches, both featuring generous helpings of high-quality toppings. The beer situation is a nice surprise, with numerous import and craft beers on draft, and the usual suspects relegated to bottle-only availability.

The service wasn't over-the-top, but it was entirely adequate. The food was good, but nothing groundbreaking. A small (10-inch) 'house special' pizza was almost ten bucks, but featured truly fresh ingredients and was undoubtedly delicious. The beer was cold enough, and there in sufficient variety to keep the masses happy. A nice place for a decent pizza pie, and one that also serves quality pints for $4 to $4.50.

Hit this up on Wednesday night when hanging out with the girlfriend and her college friend who was in from out of town. First off, it's a terrific location, literally across the street from the new Durham Bulls baseball stadium and it was a clear, mild night so we sat on the patio out front, which was cool, especially in March.

Food and beer selections were similar quality to the Raleigh location on Peace Street and hence pretty nice. I started with a Brooklyn IPA and followed that up with a pair of Foothills' stouts and all three were fresh and tasty. They could use an upgrade on some of their NC craft selection instead of only one offering from each brewer. Service was a little erratic and slow but otherwise likable. A solid place for pizza and a brew, especially if you want to combine that with a ballgame.

The new Mellow Mushroom is across the street from the Durham Bulls Athletic park. I really enjoy the look of the interior of this Mellow Mushroom.

I put down the service as being average as I have been there when it was busy and received good service but I have also been there when they were fairly slow and the service was very slow. Aside from the service being a bit slow at times I enjoy their food immensely. Their calzones rock!

The beer selection is pretty good making it a fun place to enjoy dinner and a good beer after work. Their prices are reasonable.

Definitely worth the visit!
