33 cl bottle poured into tulip glass.

Pours a murky bright yellow/orange. A moderately thick head graces the top, and lots of bubbles rush from the bottom.

Nose of Belgian yeasts, similar to a blonde. Aromas of orange, lemon, pepper, cloves, bread, hops, and banana all mingle together.

"Whoa" first comes to mind with the taste as there is a lot going on in this rather complex beer. Highly carbonated, honey is predominant with an almost mead quality to the drink. Hops, bread, cloves, rose petals, and sour cherries blend with a slight musky and nutty flavor. This is well balanced, well designed, and really quite extraordinary.

Overall, I highly recommend this beer. Very nicely done from start to finish, this is a great example of the style. I know I'd happily drink another.

a biere de garde that has that distinct woody dryness. golden almost clear pour with a head that maintains life but doesn't have a viberant note at all. like a belgian blonde with accent. nose is sour hints of apple and lemon grass and a palate of sweet brown sugar belgian malt liquor. a brisk finish with this quality with a carbonation that heats things up a bit. lager quality with a maibock sort of subtlety.

Presentation: 750 ml swing top bottle, nice label, best by date marked, and it looks like I'm just a few days late on this one. Heck w/it, I'm thrilled to have tracked this down after so long. A beer named after Hildegard of Bingen? Bring it on! Poured into my Westvleteren chalice.

Appearance: Slightly hazy dark straw gold-beer. Lots of tiny, Champagne-like carbonation. A nice creamy ivory cap shows nice retention. Overall, quite an attractive beer.

Smell: Lots of slightly sour and tart fruit and mild earthy funk. A few swirls brings out just a ghost of warm, lightly-toasted malts. I'm trying my best to pick out individual fruit aromas here, but I'm having a hard time: the best I can do is something like pineapple creme and a hint of citrus (lemon, I think). A hint of tart funk that makes me wonder if there's some wild yeast in here.

Taste: Lots more grainy, toasted malt than I was expecting from the aroma, and a lot less fruit. Some grassy hops here as well. The flavor's pretty muted (maybe from the age) but they still provide a firm and snappy medium bitterness. This is pretty tasty, but doesn't live up to the awesome aromas. I'd really like a bit more fruit here (all I'm getting is a tiny hint of citrus), and maybe some of the tart funkiness present in the aromas. Other than that, pretty tasty overall.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and medium-high carbonation

Drinkability: A 750 at 6.9% is doable, but I really think this bottle would be better split between two people and paired with food. I'm thinking some kind of rustic fare, maybe carbonnade flamande and roasted fingerlings with thyme or sage butter?

Conclusion: Glad I finally got to try this beer! I haven't had very many Biere de Gardes at this point; I really didn't like Domaine du Page. Jenlain Noel was ok, even if it was really weird. I loved Schlafly's offering because it had wonderful toasted notes with lots of fruity/funky/earthy flavors and aromas as well. Hildegarde is tasty, but I'd like a little more of the latter to balance out the big toasty notes. Rich and full enough to accompany rustic food, this would be one to pair in my opinion.

On the nose alot of fruitynes from the yeast, as well as an big yeast component

It`s very style correct if you will, with a rich taste and a firm bitternes.
Not bad, not good, just on the avarage side.

But life is to short to drink avarage beer....

A clear, golden beer with a thick, stable head. Lots of carbonation.

Smell is hoppy and has a saison-ish smell. Very attractive and mout watering. The yeast adds a complex, slighty corky smell. The hops smell noble and a little earthy.

Taste is nicely hoppy. Bitterness is medium. I expected it to be more bitter. Mouthfeel is dry, but leaves enough body. The malt is a little caramellic, maybe a little dextrinous. This beer has a good balance. It is very drinkable and a nice example for the style.

A: nice, light brown color, clear
S: mild nose, a bit of earthiness and grain but very slight
T: decent but lacks character - balanced but a bit on the sweeter side, slight hop finish, average beer
M: average mouthfeel but sweet-side is distracting
D: OK for new people to beer scene

Poured into a Leffe glass from the flip-top bottle. Produces a reasonably good head over a darker than expected, more strawberry-blonde colored beer.

The aroma of hops is rather strong for a French beer, but welcomed by this West Coast raised quaffer. The malt character is typical for this blonde style, and the hops provide a good balance throughout the drink. This is a very well-balanced, very drinkable beer.

Page 24 is one of my favorite French breweries, perhaps because of this well-hopped version of a typical blonde bière de garde.

750 ml swingtop bottle, as St Germain Page 24 Réserve Hildegarde Bière de Garde Blonde, now available in Norway at Vinmonopolet. ABV is 6.9%. Pale golden colour, just a slight haziness, big white head. Nice aroma of "Belgian" (French, actually) yeast, with spicy / peppery notes. Some fruit and grass too. The flavour is first crisp and moderately spicy / peppery, leading to a fruity moderate sweetness, ending in a moderately hoppy and spicy finish and aftertaste. A truly enjoyable bière de garde - will buy again.

Poured into my Duvel tulip from a flip top 750.

No head on aggressive pour, amber body, light lacing and some visible carbonation bubbles present. Nose is heaven, sweet green apples, almost like a sour cider. Taste is disappointing, low fizz on the tongue, almost carbonated water flavor, lightly sweet. I'm wondering if the flip top leaked some, the aroma was by far its strong point, but it might have oxidized some. I'd try this one again.

Sorry but this comment is in french :

Appearance : bière blonde, dorée, limpide avec un léger trouble
Smell : céréales, levures, épices
Taste & Mouthfell : attaque mouelleuse, vire relevé par une belle amertume. Structure puissante et élégante à la fois, tapissant bien le palais, notes maltées. Finale suave, presque doucereuse, étonnante persistance en bouche après la dernière gorgée
Drinkability : une bonne bière de garde
