Wow, this is one of the best beer bars I've been to. I've been twice, both in the afternoon, before any crowds descended.
The restaurant is set in historic Fell's Point, right off the square, giving it a wonderful ambience, much like inner harbor Annapolis and other classic old seaside urban settings. Enjoy your beer at one of the tall metal tables fronting the plaza.
Walking in you'll notice in a crossbeam a wonderful quote, "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." The main bar extends down about eleven big-screen TV lengths, fronting batteries of spigots and six double-doored fridges. Several rooms lead off the main bar--upstairs by the wooden indian, the game room off the side, and a hook to the main room in the back
Decor: dark wood floor, brick walls, floral patterned ceiling tile; paraphernalia scattered around the various rooms; draft handles for window crenellations.
Now the beer. When I went there were 102 beers on draft. Not a dog in the bunch. The Maryland beers are set in bold, in case you wish to go local. All prices were very reasonable. I had an astonishing set of beers, for about $5 each, including Heavy Seas Plank I. The food I had on my first visit was ok, but the mediocrity is not difficult to forget once you get into the hops of the place.
Make Max's a part of your beer journey in Balto.

Atmosphere: This place is rustic and filled with more beer paraphernalia than you can imagine. Signs, mirrors, quotes, tap handles, pictures, and displays. Just shy of cluttered, but brings a beer-orientated ambiance.
The layout is a high point with several different bars inside. The main bar when you walk in is the largest and probably the most generic. Plenty of light plays on the wooden interior. Towards the back of the downstairs theirs an area I’ll refer to as a ‘nook’, much more private with a much smaller bar. This area is low light and quite intimate. The upstairs houses yet another bar, but is split into two deck areas. The floor plan is slightly more open and seems more European than the main bar.
Atmosphere overall reminds me of Delirium Café in Brussels
Service: Bartenders seemed flustered, but that is to be expected during the festival. The ordering strategy was 3-4 oz samples ordered with flight cards. From what I could gather, everyone seemed friendly as they could be and knowledgeable as well.
Selection: My experience was during the Belgian Beer Festival. The quality was impeccable. The amount of beers on tap including the bottle selection was unbelievable. This is Max’s strong suit.
Value: The flight style samples were all $3.50 regardless of the beer, which afforded the ability to taste a lot of world-class beers. Overall, this place is at the pinnacle of the beer drinking experience. If you find yourself anywhere even remotely close, stop by.

A low key bar in Fells that has one of the best selections in the city. Getting a beer can be a bit of a task at times depending on the business level. I personally recommend walking or taking a cab if your visiting from out of town as parking can be challenging.

Great place, however The fat bald bartender is the worst bartender I've ever encountered. Rude Disgusting. Fire him and this place is awesome.
Great beer selection. Fun crowd. Great location. Avoid the bald bartender with glasses. He is rude and obnoxious and gives this place a bad name.
