Got this at Bert's Bierhuis in Utrecht.

From a bottle into a snifter.

APPEARANCE: Pours a nice looking medium-thick off-white head with excellent retention. Low end carbonation evident and deep auburn brown in color. Thick foam cap isn't going anywhere. Nice thick foam crown remains and leaves sheets of lacing down the glass. Looks great.

SMELL: Caramel malt and dark fruits, including raisins, dates, and grapes. Hints of brown sugar. Not overly bold, but very nice and well balanced.

TASTE: Some sweet caramel malt and bready notes, as well as dark fruits, such as raisins and dates mostly. Brown sugar notes, as well as some spicy elements. Coriander is in there as well. Mild but lingering aftertaste is full of caramel sweetness, spicy notes, and touches of bitterness for balance. Very well crafted and enjoyable indeed.

PALATE: Fuller body for a double, which I like. Thick, creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes somewhat dry on the palate. Very nice here as well.

OVERALL: A top notch double from Emelisse. The nose could use a little more umph, but that doesn't detract from the overall quality of the brew. One of the better doubles I've had, and I've certainly had my share. One I'll definitely be picking up again.

Bottle purchased at a supermarket in Rotterdam. 33cl. Brown glass.

7.50% ABV.

A: Pours a khaki colour head - about 7-8cm wide - with a nice frothy consistency and complexion. Retention is quite good - ~10 minutes. Not the delicate, fragile, immovable head of the best Trappist examples of the style (e.g. Rochefort 8, Westvleteren 8, etc.) but appealing.

Body colour is a deep amber. Translucent; nontransparent. Brighter than most dubbel style beers.

It's an attractive dubbel and I'm excited to try it.

Sm: Bready malts. Spicy estery Belgian yeast. Raisin. Plum. Dates.

T: Follows the aroma for the most part, though it's quite shallow unfortunately. No deep notes of dark fruit here. It's balanced, but the flavours are muted and timid; this is quite a reticent, simple dubbel. I do like it; I just wish it committed more to its flavours.

Mf: More dry than most Belgian examples of the style. Aptly carbonated, though not perfectly so. Medium-bodied. Somewhat filling and hefty on the palate. Unrefreshing.

Not the delicate fragile feel you'd find in, say, a well aged bottle of Rochefort 8.

O: Closer to the intended style than most American attempts, but it still can't hold a candle to actual Trappist brewed expressions. I'm jealous that this is a supermarket beer in The Netherlands, but with Belgium a few hours away and plenty of well priced Belgian imports coming in, I don't know why anyone would spring for this over Rochefort, Westmalle, or the like. And let's not forget La Trappe! Worth trying at supermarket prices and definitely enjoyable stuff, but its shallowness really holds it back.

Dark caramel look with a very fine head that gives way to an even finer lacing. Smells like a Belgian ale aright, with dark fruit and strawberries and caramel and all that. The taste follows through, with caramel, toffee, strawberry jam and a bitter hop aftertaste. Decent dubbel, I'd say.

Dark murky brown with a thin head of foam that quickly evaporates, leaving a thin layer over the surface. Smell of cocoa, raisins and alcohol. Lots of flavour in the taste: cocoa, coffee, raisins and caramel. The taste of alcohol is also present, but in a good way: it combines well with the other flavours and gives this beer hints of rum. Mouth feel is a bit watery for a dubbel, but all in all a pretty nice beer.

From a 330ml bottle into a snifter

A: Pours an opaque dark reddish brown with a thin off-white head, which dissipates rather quickly. Leaves little lacing.
S: Cacoa beans, raisins, dates, some grapes, and a bit of orange.
T: A mix of caramel and the dark fruits. Proper level of sweetness. The bitterness pulls through very smoothly to balance it all out.
M: light-medium bodied. On the lighter side, and doesnt coat the mouth as well as i would like it to.

O: Definitely an enjoyable beer. Unfortunately, it was wasn't as good as i had hoped for, especially from this brewery (which i think is phenomenal). It's on the thinner side for the style. Ultimately, there are a lot better Dubbels around than this.

Right away, I received a mislabeled bottle. I bought a IIPA, says clearly on the bottle "Double IPA" on a green label but actually received their Dubbel. So, initially I was thrown off and graded as such. But half way through, I thought, this simply couldn't be - this just isn't even close to an IPA. So, there was some revising.

A - Red, almost and orange/Brown, lots of yeast, opaque aside from the light bending around the edges, pinky thinkness of cream colored head- dissipates slowly, zero lacing.

S - Chocolate, toffee, aged fruit, carmel,

T - Carmel, aged fruit (dates), a bit boozy, lots of malt, and a light bitter hop finish

M- light/medium body, a bit boozy even at 7.5%, viscosity is low, doesn't cover mouth well

O - Thinner dubbel. Chocolate and aged fruit came through but not real blended and would not call this complex. More of a carmel/chocolate with aged fruit and a slightly boozy finish.

A beautiful, dark beer with a full malt flavor.
This beer is very easily drinkable and has a slight sweet taste.
Furthermore, the hops in the aroma and the taste can be found but is not overwhelming.
I can not directly recognize flavors, mayby only some raisins.
