A 330ml bottle with a BB of June 2014. Picked up a little while back from Trembling Madness in York. Part of the innovation series - should be interesting....

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A hazy orange-amber hue with good carbonation and fine suspended sediment. Produces a huge head of creamy white foam with good retention; this slowly reduces to a thick surface layer. Aroma of smoky malt and hops with hints of smoked grain, mild kippers, rye, faint caramel, pine, grapefruit, subtle citrus and earthy yeast. A complex, smoke-heavy blend. Pretty good.

Tastes of smoked malt with a hoppy character and an intense bitter finish. Notes of woodsmoke, smoked malt, mild kippers, grainy rye, a hint of caramel, pine, grapefruit, peel, faint citrus, earthy yeast and stewed hops. Well-attenuated, followed by a powerful, hop-driven bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with soft carbonation and good body. Hop oils gently stimulate the palate. Rather astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of smoked malt, bitter hops, pine and yeast.

Not bad - a bit overwhelming but nicely crafted. Looks great, while the aroma and flavour are seriously smoky with undertones of rye and pine-laden hops. Lovely silky body. A solid brew but the smoked malt dominates the other flavours, resulting in a lack of balance. I was hoping the hops would be more forthright, though this was never going to be an easy pairing. Worth a punt if you come across it - one for smoke lovers. (1,508 characters)

Pours amber with a large lasting head.
Nose shows soft meaty smoked malt along side some spicy and herbal hops.
Flavours pretty much mirror the aroma but with a bit more emphasis on the smoked malt and spicy rye. (212 characters)

33 cl bottle poured into my breury tulip glass

Pours clear orange with a small lasting white head.
Aroma is surprisingly fruity with some grapefruit and rye. Smokiness is only present in the background, but adds a nice dimension to the beer.
The same goes for the taste which is sweet fruity with a slight smokiness and a medium bitter finish.
Carbonation is very soft giving the beer an almost creamy texture.
Very nice , easy to drink ! (449 characters)

Pours hazy orange with a nice finger and a half head, sticky lacing afterwards.
Smell of pine and bitter citrus hops, some caramel, spiciness but very faint smoke.
Taste starts sweet and spicy, some biscuit, some caramel, spicy dry rye and a bit of sweet orchard fruit (plus some mildly sweet oranges and grapefruit). Spruce, pine resin, green leafy hops dominate the bitter finish. Prickly spices here and there, peppercorn, touch of ginger. Faint smoke is felt in the aftertaste, but you can miss it if you're not paying attention.
Medium bodied, a bit oily, low to medium carbonation. Dry finish, aftertaste of hop bitterness and the mentioned faint smoke.
Nice beer, but maybe a bit too pumped full of hops, overshadowing the smoked rye malts. (747 characters)

From a 330ml bottle into a tulip.

A: Pours a clear orange/amber with a fat 2 finger white head. Leaves really nice lacing.
A: Strong meaty smoke, bacon-like, with some citrus hops in the background.
T: Some sweet malty character and caramel at the very beginning followed by a heavy smoke flavor and some rye spice. The rye pulls through a little more in the aftertaste, as the smoke dissipates. Unfortunately, the hop flavor, although present, is overpowered by the smoke. The bitterness is pretty on point overall.
M: A smooth, medium body with a nice dry finish. Carbonation is fully appropriate for this beer - a slight tingle on the tongue.

O: I VERY much enjoyed this beer. I'm a fan of smoked beers, and love how they pair with certain foods. However, it didnt really hit the mark as an IPA for me. Too strong on the smoked malt front, with a very nice rye touch... but the hop character is unfortunately lost for the most part (despite the bitterness). I was expecting a more hop forward beer with some smoke, not the other way around. None-the-less, a fantastic beer. (1,078 characters)
