This being one of my favorite beer styles, I find Wolaver's to be one of the best among them - it's a perfect winter brew.
The beer pours a deep opaque brown. It leaves a small tan head that dissipates fairly quickly. It has a strong smell of oats and chocolate and coffee. The first sip is slightly bitter, like black coffee but the finish is sweet and malty. The beer has a certain "bite" on your tongue as you swallow that lingers till you take the next sip.
Like many oatmeal stouts, it should be kept cold but often tastes better when allowed to sit at room temperature before drinking it. If you can't wait (as I often can't) it's best to slip it slowly to experience the beer at different temperatures. This isn't difficult to do since as an outmeal stout, it's somewhat heavy and fairly filling.
