Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of coffee, roasted malts. Taste is coffee up front, some oats are present, a touch of chocolate. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall this is an enjoyable beer.

one of my favorite oatmeal stouts. organic too. pours a beautiful dark roast coffee color with a 2 inch tan head. smells grainy, definitely picking up the oats here. also baking chocolate and brown sugar in the aroma. flavor matches in a less complex synergy of the aromatic profile. a little bit sweet, but not to the detriment of the mouthfeel, which is fairly carbonated and very full bodied. this is one of my favorite autumn drinks, although i think it works all year. a fine example of the style

There are plenty of advocates that will be crisp and clean with their review, but I really want to discuss the feel of this beer. My favorite beer is an oatmeal stout; the greatest oatmeal stout I've ever had came from Front Street Brewery in Wilmington, NC in a large jug that had become flat after some time in a friend's fridge. I drank the entire jug in one sitting; I did that, because I was drinking oatmeal. Literally.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout: Always available, more stout than oatmeal.

Then Wolaver's: I solidly put this in the upper echelon. If the beer from Front Street was a perfect 5.0 (I still remember that day and how I relished that jug), Wolaver's is a perfect 4.0. The oatmeal is present and powerful and the stout does not overpower it.

I'm drinking from a bottle and the beer was a bit tart; I can't be sure if that's from shelf life or the true taste, but I recommend it fully and with gusto. I can only imagine that drinking this from a tap or fresh would be amazing. Grab a six-pack.

Had this on 2012-01-12 in Columbia, PA

A - Not quite opaque dark brown with tinges of ruby around the glass edges. 1.5 finger tan head that fades to a skim coating and leaves a little lace.

S - Very nutty, coffee, malted chocolate, medium roasted grain, touch of hop floral.

T - Much like the smell with an emphasis on malted chocolate, less coffee, tasty roasted/burnt grain, mild spice, molasses but not overly sweet and with a pleasant balancing leafy hop bitterness.

M - Medium body and light-medium carbonation. Reasonably creamy but not thick.

O - Very nice. I like this flavor a little more than the Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout although not as bold as a Founders Breakfast Stout.

This beer had me frustrated for a good 15 minutes while I tried to pour it. The amount of carbonation was insane, and the full-glass head took forever to dissipate enough to pour out the entire bottle. Freak bottle, I think. Once poured, the chocolate and light roast aroma pulled me in, and the taste equaled the aroma. A very nice, well balanced stout. Carbonation was crazy, like I mentioned, and that made it feel a bit different on the palate.

A - Pours almost black with a light red hue when held up to the light, tan one finger head with spotty lacing.

S - Freshly ground coffee, chocolate, cream, oats. I'm really impressed with the smell.

T - Tastes like a breakfast consisting of coffee, oatmeal with chocolate bits in it this beer is outstanding.

M - Medium bodied with just the right amount of carbonation.

Poured into a pint glass. Reviewed alongside Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout.

A: Dark brown with two-finger, tan, creamy head that lasted a few minutes. Pretty good lacing.

S: Sweet malt, oatmeal, and chocolate. Really nice.

T: Moderate sweetness and light bitterness. Roasted coffee, chocolate, and toffee. Nice roasted flavor. Not too sweet and the light bitterness balances the flavor well.

M: Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Really smooth and slightly creamy.

O: Samuel Smith's had a nicer head and lacing and was definitely the creamier of the two, but this Oatmeal Stout had a richer aroma and flavor. I call it a tie. Both are excellent, but then again, I love Oatmeal stouts.
