appearance - Has a medium-light amber/brown color. Formed a small head from the bubbles, but does not stick around.

smell - Toasted nuts, and malt smell.

taste - Sweet malt, not on very heavy, tip of hops. Nice balance.

mouthfeel - Light/medium body with a low carbonation feel.

drinkability - For me this is a light sipper. if I could guess the ABV might be 8-9%. I drank this at a cafe that has BYOB. I was done with my food and still had a lot to drink. So I bought a cookie lol. Left about a 3rd of the drink left.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine April 2007.

Otter Kilter is the latest release in the Otter Creek World Tour of specialty beer releases. This one is a Wee Heavy, or Scotch Ale, which is a Strong Ale style that's rarely brewed anymore. Our guess is that beer geeks have abandoned big malt for big hops.
Pours into a thistle glass as a rich, dark, amber brew with ruby hues. A wonderful cascading carbonation rises to a three-inch tan, foam head with a healthy stay.

Soft aroma with suggestions of sweet, floral nectar. Nice malt base is laid out up front, with a near-chewy mouthfeel and fullness on the palate. Creamy carbon- ation. A rather bold, malty caramel profile, ample sweetness, top notes of toffee and honey and backing notes of herbs and pith. An enjoyable tea-like flavor runs throughout. Some chocolaty flavors pull through as things warm. Faint hints of smoke. Hops are slightly detectable, which is a good thing. Light spiciness, underripe, jammy fruits, with alcohol beneath. Lingering smokiness, some wood, and a wicking caramel in a bone-dry finish.

Maltheads and Scotch Ale lovers rejoice. This is one fine Wee Heavy. Indulge with some shortbread fingers or butter cookies. And go ahead, nobody's looking-- dip it in the beer.

I've been loving the World Tour series and I haven't seen this pone yet, gotta try it. Poured the 22oz bomber into an Otter Creek World Tour pint glass.

Appearance: Deep mahogany, nice 2 finger fluffy head.

Smell: Malts, caramel, sweet.

Taste: Very sweet, which is traditional for the style. Very malty.

Drinkability: I'm not sure what the ABV is but I would guess 6% which makes this quite drinkable, if you like a sweet beer.

This is a dark, somewhat hazy mahogany color with a modest off-white head and fair but thin traces of lace. The aroma is big time malt and some herbal root with hints of deep cocoa and maple syrup. Yum. The flavor brings more malt and more herbal beauty. It's mid-bodied plus, tangy with fine carbonation. There are chocolate raspberry hilights. But this is mostly a malt extravaganza as it should be, deep and earthy, mellow and bright all at once. It's medium drinkable and very flavorful. Very good stuff, almost a barleywine here.

Poured from 22oz brown bomber into a clear pint glass. No freshness date. Purchased at Ancona's (Ridgefield, CT) for $4.49.

A: Deep, hazy chestnut brown with 1-finger light beige head with good retention and a thin line with icicles of lace and a smattering of other formations down the glass.

S: Very malty with lots of toastiness and a light peat-smoke edge with herbal hops

T: A great tasting ale with loads of toffee, caramel, and toasted caramel and dark malt flavors mingling with a small amount of peatiness. The hops are supporting cast but are nutty and earthy. Alcohol is not at all detected.

M: A medium-full bodied beer that is filling but still light enough in the feel to keep from weighting you down. Carbonation is low and adds to the drinkability of this horse of a brew.

D: A very good Scotch ale. The second of two good shots from the Otter Creek World Tour (the Maibock is even better though I think). This is a very good Sctoch ale with a lowish ABV whic is just fine by me. Malt-lovers are in for a filling treat with this superb brew.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a Willimantic Brewing Co. pint glass.

A: Poured a dark amber color with very bright orange and golden highlights to it. A medium-sized head of light tan foam formed atop the brew. Carbonation seemed low and it provided some sticky lace.

S: Smells sweet, floral and fruity, with a full nose of roasted and smokey caramel malt and oak mixed with berry.

T: Taste is full on sweet roasted caramel malt and fruity malted hop flavors. A rich and bittersweet flavor of oak and vanilla mixes with a boozy and fairly robust fruity palate. A deep ale flavored with smoked dark fruit and fermented brown sugar.

M: Mouthfeel is full and velvety.

D: This is a nice wee heavy, but it might be a little too sweet and fruity to stick with. It's nice with a meal, mine went with Easter ham, but I'd get get exhausted by it after two.

Not a bad wee heavy at all and actually a nice addition to the OC World Tour. A heavy and sweet brew with equal parts roasted, sugary malts and a solid fruity ale taste with low hop bitterness.

Pours a nice deep, dark brown with a very nice looking fluffy head. Not a bad looking pour at all.

Smell is caramel, brown sugar, sweet malt, lots of malt...

Taste is definitely that very upfront sweetness from a strong Scotch Ale. I get a lot of brown sugar, cotton candy, caramel, molasses etc...its a bit cloying at times.

Not a bad Scotch Ale but a bit sweet for my taste. The condensed sweetness may however come from this one being a bit old, hard to day.

L: Pours a deep red-brown color with a medium sized and medium bodied head that takes some time to fade and laces the glass very nicely on the way down.
S: Smells of sweet and bitter roasted malts, a hint of smokiness, and some vanilla.
T: Tastes of roasted and toasted malts, some sweet and some bitter, some vanilla flavor, some dark fruit, and a nit malty bitter at the end.
M: Rich, smooth, warming, right amount of carbonation.
D: Pretty good, I would have liked it a bit sweeter, but it was still a good version of the style.

Otter Kilter is a clear, solid red ale with a quickly fading tan-orange head. The aroma is of malt: sweet, sour, and dark. There is perhaps a dusting of some grassy hops and peat. It the mouth, it is full bodied and smooth-- almost syrupy. It has prickly carbonation and a quick, dry finish. It tastes the way it smells. There's a little peat late in the taste. It's quite sweet. I can't really taste any hops. Warmth from the alcohol is present. It's very much a malt showcase.

A slightly cloudy reddish-brown. No real head. Bit of cream-colored lacing.

Nose is biscuity malt, a hint of smoke, and something slightly metallic. I don't know why that's happening with some of my beers lately. May be that they're a skosh too cold?

Taste is sweet biscuity malt. The smoke isn't really there, but fortunately, neither is the metallic aspect. There's maybe a hint of raisin. It's solid, but I'm not blown away. I like SA Scotch Ale quite a bit better. Maybe a bit of raisin. I'm not really getting much else in this. Faintly bitter, but not in a hoppy way.

Mouthfeel and drinkability are both quite good for the style. I'd rate it a bit higher on D if the taste did more for me.

Pours a two finger very light tan head that fades slowly, leaving a good lace. Nice clear, deep amber color. Good carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Caramel nose. Flavor is caramel and alcohol which is unusual with the low (6.5%) ABV but a decent scotch ale. 22oz bottle part of 3-pack $12.99 from Manchester Wine and Liquors Manchester, CT
