Found this single 12 oz brown bottle in the discontinued bin at Binny's in Glen Ellyn. IL for $1.59. No freshness or bottled on date, just a couple paragraphs about the brewery and the beer.
The beer pours a clear medium gold with a 1 finger white head that fades in less than a minute to a thin white rim. No lacing at all. Never saw a clear unpasteurized wheat beer before. I was expecting some haze or cloudiness, but you can see right through this one.
The smell is almost non existent. Just the slightest whiff of citrus.
This stuff was awful. Basically just a big dose of over carbonated bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin and watery and highly spritzy and the aftertaste was bitter. Where's the flavor? Is there any malt in here at all? A very disappointing beer, especially since it comes from Otter Creek, who usually turns out top rate stuff.
The side label does say that this beer can change over time and maybe that's what happened to this one. With no freshness date to go by, maybe this bottle was a leftover from last year's summer batch instead of this year's batch and that's why I found it in the discontinued bin. I can only hope this was the case because as is, this is undrinkable.
