12oz bottle from Wolaver's mixed 12

A- Dark brownish black. Very slight off-white yellowish head that dissipates fast. Not much carbonation.

S- Strong smell of espresso, coffee beans, chocolate.

T- Strong coffee taste, lightly sweet.

M- medium bodied, great drinkability.

O- This was definitely a great beer. Easily sessionable. If you like coffee flavor this is definitely the beer for you. One of the better coffee porters that I've had.

A: Pours the color of rootbeer, dark brown with an auburn tinge to it. Somewhat cloudy. Off white head dissipates quickly to a thin skim on the top. No lacing to speak of.

S: Nice sweet fresh brewed coffee aroma. Get a bit of vanilla bean in there as well, supported by a chocolatey malt aroma.

T: Taste just didn't live up to the aroma on this beer. The coffee flavor is watered down, it's there but it's more of a background flavor then being prominent. The sweeter chocolate
tone is there as well, but again it's just not that prominent, and the vanilla is completely absent. Bit of acidic bitterness as well.

M: Came across as quite watery to me, thin, and had some prickly carbonation.

O: It's an OK tasting beer, but well off of the quality I've had in other good porters, not to mention the better coffee porters.

Dark espresso brown with a surprisingly white head. . .

Smells like a big bag of coffee beans...

Deep porter with roasted malt and espresso bean flavors... the taste is light which is a disappointment considering the solid aroma. Mouthfeel is average, not much carbonation, nothing stands out...

This one has potential... I wish the coffee taste was stronger...

I have now consumed four bottles of this over the past month, attempting different combinations of food, no food, time of day, and mood. Why? Because I've been struggling to finish even one bottle, and with my respect for Otter Creek, and this style, I thought it was only fair to give a thorough exam of this ale which was referred to me by a close craft beer lover.

Pour is dark mahogony, with attractive red edges against the light. The tan head is short and lacks lace inducing qualities. But still I'd say it's overall an attractive dark porter.

Smell is good, with a mixture of roasted malts and toasted, almost burnt coffee.

Flavor is where this ale goes south for me. Mind you, I enjoy coffee porters. In fairness, there is a nice combination of malt, molasses and light hop. But the backbone of this beer, the coffee, simply tastes like old, burnt coffee grounds. And with an overly stale taste it really distracts from the otherwise deep, malty character that any porter deserves.

Mouthfeel is fine for this style, just a little bright up front, but smooth and syrupy in the swallow with little dryness.

Overall, I was fairly disappointed with the Alta Gracia. I enjoy everything else I've had from Otter Creek, and love coffee porters in general. I'll wait a good while before trying it again. Although I plan to revisit this ale in the future to ensure that there isn't something wrong with my batch (or my tastebuds).

Had this on 2012-01-25 in Columbia, PA

A - Pretty clear, ruby-brown with a 1.5 finger tan head that drops fairly quickly leaving little lace.

S - Coffee and some more coffee, light caramel and a hint of milk.

T - Mocha latte with an extra shot of well-roasted expresso mild dash of vanilla. Lingering roasted grain, coffee and light-moderate acrid bitterness. Tastes good but pretty one-dimensional.

M - Light-medium body and carbonation. Not creamy and not thin.

O - Enjoyable but didn't knock my socks off. The flavor didn't grab me enough to want to put this beer in rotation.

Review from notes, 21JAN12.

12oz bottle from schwaeh poured into a New Belgium globe.

A: Pours a very dark and nearly opaque brown with a tannish head bordering on yellow that can be easily revived with a vigorous swirl. Decent lace.

S: Prominent roasted coffee beans with a definitive earthy body. Wet earth and herbal characters, maybe some toasted/charred wood. Light sweetness but the vanilla seems invisible so far.

T: Roast coffee/espresso astringency...the vanilla makes an appearance with a light creamy sweet note. Pretty robust roasted barley notes, very distant chocolate.

MF: Light-to-medium mouthfeel with good bitterness and dryness on the finish.

O: A good coffee beer, I think it could be improved with a better union of vanilla and coffee beans to cut through some of the acrid notes. Still very pleasant and a good beer for those of us that love coffee.

A deep russet brown color. A foamy cap about a finger in depth is produced, mocha colored. Some lacing is left around the glass. Aroma is the big thing here. The most aromatic coffee porter/stoudt I've had to date. Extreme coffee but more like fresh dark coffee beans and not brewed black coffee. There are sutle hints of vinilla at the end and yes I do not smell any malts.
Taste is of course a big bold coffee taste, but that's it. The porter aspect is gone or more like overpowered by the abudance of coffee. Smooth, medium body with a semi-dry finish. This beer is definitely a good tasting beer, there is just too much coffee presence. Drinks like a coffee beverage. There is no balance of coffee and porter beer, it's all coffee. But it's good.

Deep brown with reddish highlights and a short, tan/brown cap. Decent head retention with a bit of lacing. Roasty aroma, coffee and brown sugar, mild vanilla. Nice flavour, moderate bitterness with roast and caramel, vanilla and toffee. Moderate carbonation, but the body felt a little thin, perhaps overattenuated given the dryness - maybe it's just astringency. Overall, nice flavour and aroma. I'd purchase again if in e mood for a coffee beer.
