Doug opened up a 12oz bottle with us today, 10/15/2013. Poured into a Three Floyds' teku glass.
Hazy orange-mango skin coloured body that came with a solid 1-2cm white head with good retention. Lots of lacing. Honestly looks like Double Sunshine does, but that could be the Lawson's name on the bottle here.
Mostly grapefruit and orange, a bit of pine in the back. This beer is all hops. I can get nothing from the malts- no breadiness, no toffee, no honey, no caramel, no nothing. This is all straight up hops, which is appropriate for a beer called Double Dose. Smells delicious and very pungent.
Same concept as in the nose. Grapefruit, orange zest dominate the aromatic hop aspect while the pine is in the background and seems to contribute more of the bitter hop aspect as it seems to get bitter when I get more of the pine on the palate. Very little caramel in the background.
Solid mouthfeel, relatively well carbonated, medium bodied. Runs a bit hot with a dry finish. Quite a bit of bitterness that only ramps up as the beer disappears.
Very well-executed double IPA. This beer is meant to bring a crapload of hops into your mouth and that's it. Barely any malt backbone, yet somehow this beer delivers an excellent sensory drinking experience. Fun and hoppy as hell, but not on the level of Heady Topper or Abrasive. Still, I highly recommend this.
