Hard to rate atmosphere and service as anything other than average, it is a grocery store after all.

Selection is good for a grocery store. Much better than Jewel, Dominicks, etc. You can get most of the midwestern craft brews found in Chicagoland, mostly in sixers, but there's a small selection of bombers as well. Certainly doesn't compare to the selection down the road at Binny's.

But the prices? Damn.

I am a huge fan of Great Lakes because it's great beer for a great price, and the first thing I noticed was that a six-pack of Edmund Fitzgerald was $1.50 less than I had ever seen it, and it wasn't even on sale. Most other sixers are $1.00+ cheaper than Binny's as well.

To sum it up, if you're looking for something out of the ordinary, this isn't your place. However, if you are stocking up you'll save some green here, no doubt.

Time to re-review, it's been 5 years.
10-2011: Floorplan was rearranged, beer is now in coolers immediately to the right of the doors, along the wall. Selection seemed to be further expanded to 300-400 or so beers.

First couple times I was here, the imports were out of date, and I learned this the hard way. Since then, the overall selection has improved quite a bit, mainly in the US craft area.

Full lines from Bells (plus mix-a-six), including Hopslam for 15.99, with a poster on the door even. Basic lines from Founders (no seasonals), FFF (out of all but Dreadnaught), Bridgeport, Lagunitas, Left Hand, Anderson Valley, Big Sky (Cowboy Coffee), Point (latest Whole Hog), Sprecher (seasonals), some of the more obscure second-tier breweries. All Bells singles were in code, post-batch 10000, save for Bell's Lager from last April. There was a sad shelf of Pizza Beer way back in the corner, if anyone is still jonesing for some.

Service was better at the register, they price checked and rang up a limited single for the mix-a-six price, and offered a box for the beer. A pretty solid option in the immediate area, though Binnys Algonquin is the behemoth further north up Randall Rd.

I've been to this Woodman's twice, and the level of quality compared to other locations in WI is a bit lower. On both occasions, a few import singles purchased were noticeably old with stale off flavors...leading one to believe that their stock was not regularly rotated. My advice would be to be choosy with what you find here, and check for signs of age/oxidation (depending on what you buy). Service on the floor was nonexistent.

In term of selection, they had several euro imports i hadn't seen around Chicago, like Weltenburger Weissbier and Dunkel. Prices were reasonable, and the overall selection was decent. A few gems to find, but in a league far behind Binny's and other NW suburban shops.

Over the years I have often visited Woodmans for food, wine, and not to mention beer.
They always have a good selection of beer from the midwest along with a few imports. 70% of their selection though is BMC.
What I like about it though is that everything is in coolers, so you can usually depend on what you buy to be cold and fresh.
They have a small section of singles you can buy which is nice, but they never change; its always Sam Adams/Lienenkugels/etc.
Woodmans has great prices. When they used to have 120 minute IPA for $7.99 I stocked up, but sadly they havent had it in awhile. They also have the best price in the area on every type of Chimay 750mL bottles; blue being only $9.99.
Overall, a good place, but it is very rare for them to get anything new in, so I only go back when I want something I know they have.

I've been shopping at this Woodman's location for years, and with good reason, they have an excellent liquor department. The other reviews point out that their craft beer selection is lacking when compared to the WI stores. I can't comment on that myself, but the selection they do have is more than adequate for me and my family/friends as well. IL has tough distributor laws which is what I believe is the culprit for the selection difference.

I am better able to find craft beers here than I do at my other liquor store stand-by, Binny's. Binny's experiences such a high volume, that they regularly run out of stock, and prevent me from picking up a sixer of what I was hoping for. Not only can I find what I'm looking for, but the price is VERY reasonable, in fact they always have better prices than Binny's as well. Need a Macro by chance? I can't imagine you'll find a better price on any macro in any packaging size (at least I never have). I'll continue to visit this store for my beer needs, and would recommend anyone to stop by and see for themselves.

I think the main benefit from this Woodman's location which I've been to more times than I can count is their decent (loose term) selection and very reasonable prices. For example, the 120 min IPA, elsewhere $10-$12 is $8 at Woodmans. I've never had a problem with anything I've purchased from there. [Quality edited - had quite a few off bottles from the singles section]

Their selection consists pretty heavily of more of the standard imports as opposed to anything hard to find but thats fine. Staple micro-brews populate the shelves too. They have 6 packs, cases, and a cluster of singles which are always nice to see.

If you get a chance, stop in. Just the liquer section in general is amazing. The beer (aside from 3.2 standard cases) are all cold and hidden from light in the back.

I have been to the WI woodman's and they are wonderful. When I went into this woodman's grocery store it was set up the same way so I picked up some cheese curd and a few interesting mustards and walked to where the beer should be. This woodman’s is actually two different stores. You have to pay for all your groceries then you walk to the out the door and around the building to the woodman's liquor store.

So I put my groceries in the car and went around to the liquor store. The store has stacks and stacks of beer and wine and has many 6-packs, 12-pack and cases of beer chilled. The problem is it is all the same BMC that I could buy anywhere just in different quantities. They had a 7 ft tall stack of Tequilez (sp?), do they still make that? When I got to the craft beer it was a very small section in comparison. They had the token beers from common countries in Europe with nothing to write home about. I was interested in the mix a 6-pack of some good brews. They barley had enough to fill one 6-pack. They had the whole line of Berghoff's, Leine, Redhook and Point and that was it. I walked around to look to see if they had any local meads, as the other woodman's do and there was nothing.

The sign on the mix a 6-pack says that it is 1.59 a beer or 6 for 6 for 7.54. That is why I got 6 beers. So when I went to pay they rang up as 9.54 and I reminded the clerk that it was the 6-pack discount. He said that I had to buy 6 of the same beers. That doesn't make any sense? He did ask if I wanted a bag and made the effort to put it in paper instead of plastic which I though was nice. I will stop by woodman's every time I go to WI but I don't think I will stop by the liquor store portion of this one again.

WOW.

I walked in expecting the normal grocery store selection and was very pleasantly surprised.... They have their own seperate liquor store at the north side entrance, and the first thing you notice as you walk towards the beer is that they have the larger size (.5L-.75L) bottle selection first, not the macros [these are tucked away at the farthest side of the store from the entrance..]. Also, while the selection is not quite up to Binny's/Sam's, but they carry 3 times what you would normally expect to see in the run of the mill store.

Then you notice the prices, anywhere $1-$3 less per sixpack and the singles are about the same percentage off. Great selection of micros/imports/5L kegs. Brief list... (weltenburger, weihephesteiner, fullers, youngs, bells, great lakes, capital, flying dog, anchor, unibrou (sp?), aacht schlerenka)

The beer selection is located in the coolers on 3 walls of the store, the bulk is refrigerated.

run, don't walk here to keep turn over high and the prices low....
