I stumbled across this in a Moscow grocery store. While the pale version is available everywhere, I hadn't seen the dark before. Standard brown half liter bottle with a fairly plain label featuring the obligatory pheasant. All the front label writing was in English, while the neck foil was in Slovak, and the back label in Russian. Ingredients included saccharin. Uh-oh! Best before 12/13/03, I opened mine on 9/20/03.

Very dark burgundy ligquid under a tan head with nice contours and great longevity. Excellent lacing everywhere. The nose is mild but malty, with a bit of caramel. The mouth is smooth and prickly, perhaps a bit too prickly. The taste is heavy, sweet malt, with a touch of roasted nuts and caramel. Very nice on the tongue, the malts yield just a touch to smooth hoppy bitterness, with a finish that blends the two into a beautiful symphony. The aftertaste is mostly malt, with just a bit of hops at the back of the tongue. This pheasant soars gracefully across the palate. Nice!

This was brought to me by an old friend who actually lives in Bratislava, Slovakia. Straight from the source, so to speak. Apparently, "Zlaty Bazant Tmave" means "Golden Pheasant Dark" in Slovak.

Pours a dark brown with a nice golden reddish tint when held up to the light. Decent 1.5 finger light brown head on top. No lace. The nose is a bit disappointing. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this is a bit drab. Lightly malty with some chocolate scents. Earthy, but dull. The taste improves things a bit, as it delivers a sweet malty flavor, mixed in with faint milk chocolate and some cherry and apple. Aftertaste is a funky sensation that combines a smokiness with overly sweet malts. To me, it's not a terrible taste, but it's not great. Mouthfeel is light and a bit watery.

On the whole, I enjoyed this beer. Perhaps it was better because I knew that my buddy brought it all the way from Slovakia. But if I had regular access to this, I'd probably only revisit it on rare occasions. That said, at 3.90% ABV, it's a great session beer. I wouldn't think twice about throwing a few of these back in a Slovak bar in Bratislava.

Zlatý Bažant Tmavé Pivo from the tall can purchased in Germany. This is the dark version of the ubiquitous Slovakian lager. Beautiful ruby-tinted chestnut color. Nice head, tinted a tawny color.

Caramel is the main flavor. Not at all watery considering the low alcohol, but some sweetness gives it the sense of body. Good mouth filling carbonation.

A beer to swallow, one that gives a welcome change from the sharp Euro lagers, or from the hoppy Pilseners. [review from may 2010 notes]

Had at a Slovakian restaurant in Bratislava with some perogis. The beer is labeled "Zlaty Bazant Tmavy" - the Slovakian name, rather than the Golden Pheasant name. The beer is a nice brown cola like color. Taste is sweet and chocolatey.

Due to the low alcohol of this one (3.8%) and great taste I could drink these all days especially on a colder Slovakian day.

From a grocery store in Warsaw. Noticed the ABV after I bought it. From notes.

A - Poured a dark, dark brown colour with some red notes at the edges. No head or lacing. Bright.

S - Chocolate, some roastiness, coffee in a backup role. Not too bad.

T - Pretty good. Chocolate, roasted notes, some coffee, and a touch of cola sweetness.

M - Medium carbonation and a better body than I expected for the ABV.

O/D - A good light beer. Best light beer in a bottle I've ever had. Well done. I can't say I would turn to this often but it was well done and proved flavour doesn't require a 10% Imperial Stout.

I would put the dark lager of Zlaty Bazant a tick lower than the original lager ...

this brew is in the classic Slovakian dark style, rather dry, medium bodied and with a surprising lack of roasty notes ... well brewed, but lacks a bit of originality ...

Black color, with dark red reflexes. Dark foam, not compact.
Smell of caramel and cocoa (light), and roasted.
In the taste caramel and cocoa again, and a light bitterness. Not bad, But no peaks.
Quite light body.
Too carbonated. Aftertaste of dark malts and caramel, a bit of hop and roasted.ù
Nothing particular. And too carbonated.
