American Pale Ale (APA) |  6.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This is a strong pale, yet smooth and easy on the finish. Four different barley malts lend a rich amber color and create a backdrop to showcase the distinctive citrus-like flavor and floral aroma of horizon, Centennial and cascade hops. Although this pale could almost be named an IPA with its hoppy ingredients, the body of this beer remains reasonable and avoids and overwhelming bitterness.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: medium orange hue with a very light haze and a pretty strong effervescence. Head is a finger of creamy ivory foam. Quite attractive!

Smell: light malt aroma with a caramelly, bready character. Hop aroma is stronger than the malt with an earthy, somewhat fruity character. Pretty standard combination, but well-enough executed.

Taste: hop flavor is a little bit more subdued than in the aroma; the maltiness adds a bit of a biscuity character which isn't my favorite. So, again, not bad, but nothing special.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a good level of carbonation and a relatively nice creaminess.

Overall: a decent if unspectacular pale ale.

Pours from the beautifully labeled 12-ounce bottle into a stemless bulb of a glass, forming a white-foam head that promptly reduces to a paper-thin film of tiny bubble atop the glowing, unfiltered bronze-hued beverage. The cloudy liquid has a red-orange tinge to it, displaying the complexities of the malt mix that makes up the body of this brew. Smells of spring bloom hoppiness, a sharp mix of pale and sweet malts flavored with fresh herb and bitter orange notes. Citrus hits the mouth first, creating a pleasant sweetness as not-quite-ripe fruit gives way to caramel malt. A savory thickness arrives on a wave of darker, roasted malts. One cannot help but notice the soapiness of the ample bittering hops boiled into the mash. The light floral taste would make this beer super yummy, had the dish-soap citric taste not lingered for so long after each swallow. The mouthfeel is medium, but also leaves an unpleasant aftereffect: a touch of stickiness that coats the roof and sides of the mouth.

Hopper pale ale goes in too many directions at once. It's a fun beer to drink and analyze, but not a well balanced drinking experience. The recipe feels altogether experimental. It is close, but needs some minor tweaks. The soapy taste should really be eliminated.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Pours reddish amber with no foam. Lighter side. Light caramel toffee nose. Sweet. Mild taste backed with a sneaky bitter hop. Slightly incongruous. Flavors are good, just a little choppy. Touch too sweet. Ok, easy pale.

Pouring to an orange/gold color this beer produces only a small amount of foam that leaves a little lacing. The nose on this beer is citrus/floral and the body of the beer has a slight haze. Carbonation is a little low but active enough that the beer doesn’t seem flat.

Tasting this pale ale reveals flavors of caramel malt, pine, citrus, bread, and earthy hops to finish it off. The body of this beer is medium and the taste leans on the mild end of the spectrum. The bread- like character is nice and it reminds me of several other American- brewed craft beers.

This seems like a decently- made pale ale and a good warm- up beer for this less familiar or less apt to appreciate this style. Nothing is over the top and even the appearance gives the beer an element of approachability. It is smoother than many of its other American pale ale cousins and this, again, helps to widen its appeal with the craft beer rookies.

Hopper Pale Ale isn’t an incredible brew, but I find it certainly worthy of a try. It has enough of the qualities I like in a pale ale to make it deserving of a sample.

a clean amber pour with a finger of white head, decent retention, decent amount of lacing. smells of grassy hops, slight grapefruit, bread. a grassy bitterness up front with a nice caramel and bready backbone. sweet malty profile. medium body, modest carbonation. pretty refreshing and nice tasting pale ale. not the best beer i've had by any means but not bad at all.
